collection_select to display 2 fields
I''m trying to get a collection_select generated Drop-down box to display
two fields from a table (first name & last name); however, I am having
trouble concatenating the symbols. It appears as though any code I put
in the 5th argument for collection_select is processed prior to
executing the collection_select method. The code executes successfully
with 1 symbol in the 5th

form date helper with text year
I have a date where the year range is more then I want to define in a
select_date scaffold generated year range.
My idea was to have the year entered as a text field and the month and
day using something like:
<%= select_month @person.born,:prefix => :person ,:field_name =>
"born(2i)" %>
<%= select_day @person.born,:prefix => :person , :field_name =>

Adding fields to a form
Is there a decent way to add a field to a form before posting it? I
haven''t tried using HPricot manipulations just yet, since I can''t
ever find really solid docs on hpricot....
Form#[]= doesn''t work because it first searches only pre-existing
fields. I''m investigating how to write a patch now.
But I thought maybe someone here might have an idea.

File Column Directory Add another layer
Quick Question. I understand how to change the default path to
something other than public but what if I wanted to add another
directory into the equation. I want to upload an image into the
following structure:
/public/image/userid/imageid/test.gif
So basically I want to look up the userid in my users table and put
all the images for that user in the same directory. So i have a one

[Model] [Noob] Table Naming w/ underscores
Greetings:
I am writing a basic accounting module for an app. Rather unfortunately the
name "transactions" is a reserved term in Rails (being the only accounting
term trully representational of a financial transaction). I am left to come
up with other names. One such name was f_transaction.
This worked on the DB level, but I noticed that the Model name dropped the
underscore, thus

Enterprise Software is all about wizards
Would any one else say that enterprise systems (+150 tables) are mainly
consisted of wizards.
The flow in the software from screen to screen is looselt based on how
the business flows, and is required to be very structured. From screen
to screen the options available to the user are very limited. There is
not much freedom and the user is not overwhelmed with options.

Dynamic forms containing collections
Hiall,
I have the following problem: I need to use forms containing
collections (i will call them FCC), and I want to construct them
dynamically, as I need to deal with quite large forms (more than 600
input fields).
The variables @model_name and @field_name contain the proper model and
field names as strings, which is enough for "normal" form input
fields. (i.e. the "if

Realtime form validation for forms containing collections

I''m successfully using the realtime_form_validation plugin from
http://railsrtv.rubyforge.org/ However, my forms contain collections,
as described in the AWDWR book. Basically my form looks like this.

Accessing form field contents
I have an HTML form on the screen, that is connected to a database
(standard Ruby way). I found that there are people that would rather not
fill in this information, but would rather search Amazon for the info.
Therefore, I added a link to the right of one of the fields that, when
pressed, will search Amazon for what ever you typed into that field.
So, how can I do that? At first I tried

Can''t get observe_field to take a variable for a field name
The subject pretty much says it all: I can''t?get observe_field to take a
variable for a field name
I''ve tried:
<%= observe_field(var_name, ...
<%= observe_field("#{var_name}", ...
<%= observe_field(:"#{var_name}", ...
No luck.
Am I missing something?
Thanks,

Most Popular Searches
Hi,
I have an index where each document contains an untokenized ''url''
field. I would like to query the index for the most popular urls. In
SQL I would do this via a Group By clause. Is there anything in
Ferret that will do something similar?
I found this discussion that proposed a solution involving TermEnums:

How to List Records in Descending Order?
I am brand-new to RoR and have only followed and replicated the few
tutorials that are out there.
I have searched and searched, but cannot find an answer to this simple
question:
How can you list records in descending order?
I have the cookbook example loaded, but can''t seem to list the recipes
in reverse order (by the primary key - id).
Thanks ahead of time for any and all help.

easy scaffold question(s)
I''m doing very well with the Hibbs Rolling on Rails tutorial. I have an
easy question for my personal notes. I''m coming up with a simple framework
of steps for creating a basic database. It includes the following maxims to
make original app creation easy:
app_name = MySQL database name
SQL_tablename = model_name
model_name = controller-name
Is this going to work for getting
