transfer data from one hard drive to another
Hello I have an OS installation and data on a 40 gb drive that I would
like to image to a 80 gb drive. I don't care if the resulting
partition layout on the new drive is only 40 gb making me lose space.
I just want to move everything from the older drive because I think
it's failing. I have looked at partimage and mondo rescue as imaging
solutions but both deal with partitions. CAn someone

Package Tracking System
Hello CentOS users,
Is there any sort of package tracking system for CentOS?
I'm used to Debian where I can view a changelog for each *Debian*
specific package. This is great because I can see specifically what has
been fixed and what known issues remain from release to release in the
Debian package, which is subtly different from the upstream release.
For instance, I can see

Hot swap SATA?
Should it be possible to hot-swap SATA drives with Centos5? It doesn't
seem to work on my system. Removing an unmounted drive locked the
system up, and leaving one out at bootup makes the devices change names
and keeps grub from finding /boot on a scsi drive that is shifted up.

4.4 upgrade problems
OK ... there has been an awful lot of attributing problems to the 4.4
upgrade that are not really upgrade problems.
The best I can tell there is really only one major problem:
1. You need to install python-sqlite before sqlite (or at nearly the
same time).
To accomplish this you can do this:
yum update python-sqlite sqlite
Then after that, a normal yum update works fine.
There are 2 other

web based mail packages for CentOS
Hello Everyone,
I was using OpenGroupware but just hosed my system. Since I'm starting
from scratch I would like to know what everyone's using for web based
mail. I currently implemented cyrus-imapd and postfix which I used
before. I was going to give dovecot a try but it wouldn't start even
though it was supposed to be easier.
I would like to move my postfix to a chroot but have

How to reattach to a failed ssh session or process
Hi, is there a way to "reconnect" to a ssh session that was
disconnected and left running processes in the linux server?
I know that's the purpose of the screen command, but just to spread
know-how, is that possible?
Example:
3441 pts/0 S+ 0:00 nano /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf
I remotely connect to a machine via ssh and started to edit apache
conf and i did not used screen

HotPlug, eSATA, and /media
Ok, got a quickie.
I have an eSATA drive, a 750GB Seagate in an eSATA external enclosure, and a
Silicon Image sil3132 ExpressCard controller for my laptop. The disk and
controller work great in CentOS 5 (or F7, for that matter), if I specifically
mount it.
This is not how I want to have to use this drive, however. I want to hotplug
it; that is, plug the controller into the laptop, and then

Calling All FS Fanatics
Now that I've been enlightened to the terrible write performance of ext3 on my
new 3Ware RAID 5 array, I'm stuck choosing an alternative filesystem. I
benchmarked XFS, JFS, ReiserFS and ext3 and they came back in that order from
best to worst performer.
I'm leaning towards XFS because of performance and because centosplus makes
kernel modules available for the stock kernel.

How does CentOS compare with FC 3
I have FC 3 running on my "play/test" box. Is CentOS (RHEL) a level above?
Can I do an Upgrade or should I do an Install?

KDE-Repos
Hi Folks,
I'm verry impressed about CentOS 5. Verry stable und fast.
And yes, I know, it's mostly used as a server system. Nevertheless, I'd like
to use it as my Desktopsystem also.
My question: what is your experience with the KDE-Repos? Is it dangerous to
use it? Or is it reliable?
Thx

Samba and Scalix
I'm hoping to integrate a shared folder(s) so that we may be able to
drag and drop files from various OSs into a shared folder on a
CentOS server which can be accessed via Scalix SWA or some other email
client.
Maybe I'm totally off base with how Scalix stores files in public
folders... maybe everything has to be in mbox format for all folders and
this could never work.....
Anyway, I

CentOS5 and VMware
I have the 6 CDs for CentOS 5, and I have installed it on a couple

I just tried to create a virtual machine under VMware 5.5.4, it
goes through the 1st CD without problem, and crashes on the 2nd CD
for Xorg.
Any suggestion?

Need help with postgresql authentication set up
OS - CentOS4
PostgreSQL = 8.0.3
I think that I need to locate a custom pam module to use in
pg_hba.conf that will allow phpPgAdmin to authenticate users
against /etc/password (shadow). I cannot seem to find a straight
forward reference to such a beast either in the documentation or on
the web. The pam modules that I have found through google seem to
be intended to allow one to authenticate

Accessing shell in CentOS 4 install
Greetings,
I'm having trouble accessing a shell when I boot into the installation
of CentOS 4 (text mode). Alt-2 (which is where the shell should be
started?) shows nothing (nothing any other console). How do I access the
shell within the installation?
Thanks.
