32 Bit vs. 64 Bit Linux Server installation
Hi Centos Users
What are the advantages of 64 Bit and respective 32 Bit installation
of Centos? With PAE 32 Bit installation can address huge amount of
RAM. As a desktop system, I prefer 32 Bit installation because of
teething troubles in 64 Bit Linux world.
When would you choose 64 Bit and when 32 Bit? We are running mostly
application and web services.
Is this true that with 32 Bit

Centos 5.1 DomU on Debian Etch Dom0
Hi Centos users
I successfully installed a Centos 5.1 DomU on Debian Etch Dom0. I used
the virtual file systems from Jailtime[0]
How to this manual (without using Jailtime)? I wish to install from
Scratch. Xen-tools/rpmstrap doesn't work for me.

kernel-devel: compile MPP/RDAC kernel module
Hi Centos Users
I am running Centos 4.6 wit latest updates. For I/O multipathing I
need to use kernel 2.6.9-55 (IBM support matrix). Trying to compile
Engenio Linux RDAC Driver[0]
I fail to install kernel-devel for this exact kernel (with up2date).
Up2date always installs the newest.

Mount USB disk at startup?
I have a CentOS 5 machine with an external 500G USB disk,

How do I get this to mount automatically at boot time?
If I add to /etc/fstab:

fsck.jfs complains at boot time:

Centos 5.1, mythtv, saa7134_dvb?
I'm trying to set up my Centos 5.1 box at home to run mythtv.
The DVB-T card requires saa7134 and saa7134_dvb.
These are not in the Centos kernels.
Centosplus has saa7134, but not saa7134_dvb.
Do I have to compile the kernel myself, or is there a trick?

Slightly OT - Samba 3 and Windows DNS
Dear All
Has any one had any success with getting a Linux box to register with a DNS server hosted on a Windows 2k3 server? This process takes place automatically on the Windows boxes but not at all on the Linux boxes.
We run our Intranet/Web servers on Linux but the whole of the rest of our network is run on Windows. In the past we have used SAMBA to maintain WINS entries but would now like

File permission problems
Hi knowledgeable samba users,
I had to upgrade from samba 2.2.0 on a suse linux server (7.2). Server died after two 2+ years of loyal services - otherwise I would not have changed...
Now I have a samba 3.0.9-2.6 on suse 9.1. I can access the files only r-x, i.e. all files appear as read only.
Trying to trouble shoot I have:
- chmod-ed all the files of all the shares to 777

Cannot boot after upgrading to Centos 5.1
My local centos mirror (ftp.crc.dk) failed to boot
after having upgraded from centos 5.0 to 5.1 (i386).
It just displays

The cursor is positioned to the right of a space after
GRUB, and no input is accepted.
I've tried booting in rescue mode and run:
chroot /mnt/sysimage
grub-install /dev/cciss/c0d0
This completes without errors, but still it can't boot.
It's a HP/Compaq

Where is password expiry information stored?
Yesterday, I've moved all my samba users from a redhat 9 (i386) system
to a Centos 5 (x86_64) system. This runs samba-3.0.25-7.
The system uses NIS authentication, no shadow files.
Now all my Windows users have accounts that expire today!
Strangely, if I do a:
# pdbedit -L -v mk
I get:
Password last set: Tue, 18 May 2004 15:04:30 CEST
Password can change: Tue, 18 May 2004 15:04:30

problem with Samba upgrade
Dear Sir,
Recently I've upgraded our Samba installation. After then I find that all
WinXP workstations cannot logon to the server. The official HOWTO mentioned
this problem and suggested resetting the SID using "net setlocalsid ....".
But this does not help in my case. The SID of our server has not been
changed. So I've to go to every workstation for rejoin the domain. This

Samba with a Win9x network and RoadRunner
Hi everyone...I'm at a dead stop setting up Samba, so let me jump right into
the problem:
First, the setup: I have a RH7.3 box and a W98 laptop. The RH box also has
a W2k Pro partition. We have them on a 4-port 10base-T hub along with our
RoadRunner cable modem.
Now on to the problem: As most of you are already aware, RR uses DHCP to
assign IP addresses to client machines at boot time.

has something happened to grep
Hi all,
when I do a "grep JERRY *.h" nothing is returned which is what I expect.
This is in my source directory...
when I do a "grep JERRY *" every file is returned an a line printed even
though there is no JERRY on the line.
Then if I do a "grep JERRY *.c" just the 4 lines that have JERRY are
returned.
This is what is prints for "grep JERRY *"
