validate_uniqueness_of {combination of fields} ???
I''ve looked at the validates documentation and it appears that validates_uniqueness_of works on only one field at a time. So I can, for example, validate that "sam" is unique to the record set, and that "smith" is unique to the record set.
My problem is that each record includes two fields, the _combination_ of which must be unique to the record set, but each of

validates_uniqueness_of and create atomicity
Hi folks,
I have a question regarding validates_uniqueness_of, and similar
before-filter-like events attempting to guarantee some DB state prior
to modification.
>From my reading of ActiveRecord, validate_uniqueness_of appears to
cause a SELECT on the underlying table attempting to ensure that a
record with ID(s) specified in the validates_uniqueness_of statement
is not already present, prior

Hi All,
I''m newbie to this tool and following some tutorials I''ve came across
with this problem when configuring my webpage:
In Debian/testing, ruby1.8, rails1.1
I create my audio application which connects to a database (mysql) named
audio with tables:

validates_uniqueness_of - how to use multiple values for scope
Hi
I''m trying to create a basic test management tool to organise the manual
testing I have to do. I''m working on the results recording module and have a
problem.
Basically, I want each test result to belong to a test case, a test
environment and a build.
I want to make sure there''s no duplication of results with these 3
properties. If someone tries to enter a new test

validates_uniqueness_of in update
I have a problem with the usage of validates_uniqueness_of that I
hope someone can help throw a light on. With a new record, this
validation works fine. But my problem came when I am updating a
record. I was not able do it because it tells me that field value
already exists. I was actually updating the value of other fields.
According to the documentation which says "When the record is

validates_uniqueness_of two fields
Is it possible to do a validates_uniqueness_of :name, :zip but only in
that context? I''d like to be able to have that zip used again, but not
in conjunction with a name already with that zip.
Does that make sense?

Rails validation is inefficient
Hi,
I have a User model, with a validates_uniqueness_of :login
The generated SQL for the validation is:
SELECT * FROM `users` WHERE (LOWER(users.login) = ''fernando'' AND
users.id <> 10001) LIMIT 1;
and it takes 0.13s to happen (my table has 10.000 rows)
When I use the EXPLAIN instruction on it, it shows that it will use the
primary_key as index, but this is not

save! not allowed after validates_uniqueness
I have this in a model
validates_uniqueness_of :aspect, :scope => :user_id
In an instance method of the same model I have "save!" but I don''t touch
the :aspect attribute in that instance method at all.
Whenever that save! command is run however I get this error:
ActiveRecord::RecordInvalid: Validation failed: Aspect has
already been taken

Validation issues
I have a form. Everything submits into the database if I don''t have any
validation rules. When I put these rules:
validates_uniqueness_of :title, :message => "already exists in
database"
validates_presence_of :title
I get this error (which seems weird because I am not validating against
that):
You have a nil object when you didn''t expect it!

enforcing special behavior of child rows in HABTM
Hi,
I have a scenario where a doctor can have one or more specialties.
For each doctor, one and only one of her specialties can be designated
as primary.
So I have tables called doctors, specialties, and doctors_specialties,
the last of which has a boolean is_primary column.
The doctor model class specifies that:
has_and_belongs_to_many :specialties
I want to enforce, at the lowest possible

ActiveRecord Validations - validates_uniqueness_of
Hello,
I''m wanting to use Mocha and Stubba for my tests in place of the
default Rails testing with fixtures.
I have the following class:
class Person < ActiveRecord::Base
validates_uniqueness_of :email
end
and am wondering how I can test to ensure that the
validates_uniqueness_of validation is running.
Any ideas?

Is there a way to validate a model w/o saving it?
I have some code in my controller which looks like this:
if request.post? and @account.save and @user.save
...
end
and in my Account and User models I have many :validates, like so
account.rb
validates_presence_of :subdomain, :on => :create
validates_uniqueness_of :subdomain, :on => :create, :message => "is
already being used"

Validating Existing Models
I''ve got a user object which has quite a few attributes mapped to the
database. As of right now I''ve got some validations in the model like:
validates_presence_of :password, :message => "You must specify a valid
password."
validates_confirmation_of :password, :message => "Password doesn''t match
the confirmation."

callback executed like after_save but after transaction
I''m trying to add some code for my ActiveRecord class so that it is
executed whenever an object is updated, this code is a seperate
process that reads from the same table represented by my model class
so when it runs it needs the database to be up to date.
In the following situation this is fine:
# MyModel
def after_save
`/usr/local/bin/update_models -i #{self.id}`

Confusing lock problem in rails
I have a model class in rails that has a class variable that is a
ferret index. For some reason, the methods in my class that refer to
the class variable are getting lock conflicts. Can anybody see any
obvious reason why? I notice that it keeps leaving a lock file in the
index directory. I thought auto_flush was supposed to remove the lock
automatically after every operation. Is there

after_create and after_save
Hi,
AFAIK after_create is called after_save if the entry does not exist in
the DB.
Is there a way to tell if a specific model is new or not in
after_save?
I have to do something like:
def after_save
add_to_history ''save''
end
def after_create
add_to_history ''create''
end
However after_save is called when creating too.

Very strange after_save problem. Please help.
I have a very strange problem here. I do not get this. So any help is
greatly appreciated.
Basically I have a model that calls a method in the background
process in the "after_save" method. Let''s call the model products. So
what happens is this:
1. I create a new product.
2. Everything works and the product is saved with id 13.
3. A method is called in my background
