Date Validation: The February 31st Problem
Hi Railers,
I''m wondering if anyone has found a nice solution to the problem of validating
dates to prevent things like 29th February 2005, or 31st September and so on?
I see it was discussed before...
http://wrath.rubyonrails.org/pipermail/rails/2005-March/003804.html
...but with no particularly ideal solution...

validates_format_of on an optional field using :if
Hi there,
I''ve got the following in my model:
validates_format_of :postcode,
:with => /^([a-zA-Z]{1,2}[0-9]{1,2} [0-9]{1}[a-zA-Z]{2})$/,
:message => "is not valid",
:if => :postcode
... but it''s not working - it always insists on validation, even if postcode
is empty. Basically, the postcode field is optional, but if it''s filled in, I
want to

Asynchronous Encryption?
Hi Railers,
I''m looking for something to do asynchronous encryption - where the encryption
and decryption keys are different. This is for a scenario where I want to be
able to store some information in the database that can only be decrypted in
a different physical location using a secret private key (which will not be
stored on the machine doing the encrypting).
I''m trying

"uninitialized constant Reloadable" error heads-up
I can''t duplicate this problem on my local machine, but also can''t find any
mentions of it on the Gmane archive, so thought I''d just throw in a quick
mention in case anyone else comes across it.
On Textdrive, using gem rails 1.1, in an app that works fine on my local
machine, I get the following error in my production.log:

"script/server -e production" doesn''t work
I''ve got an error that''s only happening on my live webserver, so wanted to
test on my local machine in the production environment.
On my local machine, I tried to run...
script/server -e production
... but get: server: invalid option: -e
Has this been disabled or renamed in 1.1?
I''m running gem Rails 1.1, Ruby 1.8.4, and the server is Lighttpd 1.3.16.

Ruby "htmlentities" replacement: code review please!
Hi Railers,
For some time now I''ve been looking for a decent Rails equivalent of PHP''s
"htmlentities" command, because ERB''s html_escape (or more commonly called as
just "h", eg. <%=h @somevariable %> ) just doesn''t go far enough for me.
Back in PHP land, I actually had an extended version of the htmlentities
command to deal with

validates_confirmation_of has stopped working
Hi Railers,
I''m past considering myself a noob in Rails land - I think what I''m up against
here is more of a bug or an anomaly that I''m unaware of (or that has changed
in a recent version).
I had a fully working validates_confirmation_of :email_address field in my app
- was one of the first things I set up, extremely simple, been working for a
long time.
Then one

Page caching when name contains a dot (period)
Hi Everyone,
Just thought I''d post some details of an interesting little quirk I''ve found
with page caching.
For a site I''ve just built for a small music festival, there are a number of
artist profiles. I''m storing the artists in my database, but using
caches_page to speed things up when displaying the details to the public.
I''ve also made it so

XML Not Working in Explorer 6
I''m playing with XML using Builder but seem to be having some trouble in

can''t get my rss to validate with feedtools
I know that I''m doing something wrong, but I can''t figure out what.
I''ve looked at every wiki and tutorial I can find on feedtools but I
still can''t get my rss feed working. Here''s my code.
feed = FeedTools::Feed.new
feed.entries << FeedTools::FeedItem.new
feed.entries[0].author.name = "Charlie Bowman"
feed.entries[0].title =

Best options for full customer control of content?
Hi Railers,
I have a scenario to figure out that I''ve never yet come to a good answer for,
and I''m hoping some of you can shed some light.
The owner of website I built a while back (in PHP) would like to extend the
capabilities of the website to be fully CMS driven, with multiple language
versions (French, Spanish etc.) available in future. At the moment, a few

Why is my rxml view being wrapped by the rhtml template in views/layouts?
Why is my rxml view being wrapped by the rhtml template in views/
layouts?
I was experimenting with REST, I had a nice little test program with
one table: ''resources''. Here''s what the show method looks like:
def show
@resource = Resource.find(params[:id])
respond_to do |accepts|
accepts.html
accepts.xml
end
end
I have a show.rhtml

Double opt-in mailing list engine / gem?
Does anyone have any existing code for a double opt-in mailing list system
based on Rails? Wouldn''t be hard for me to make one, but I don''t want to
reinvent the wheel if someone else has already done it and published the code
somewhere?
It''s for one-way mailshots only. I don''t need to do much more than collect
email addresses of interested people - if the

Should assert_tag be used to test rxml views?
I''m getting strange errors attempting to test an rxml view with
assert_tag. I can see that what the view is producing is correct but I
get an error like "ignoring attempt to close foo with bar" (where bar is
a tag which is meant to be nested in foo). Is asssert_tag meant for xml,
or just html?
Cheers, Robert.

Client had recoverable error
Mhhh. I am streaming from a 8mbit adsl connection so it should be fast
enough. I tried streaming with media player, it's working for 24 hours now,
doesn't seem to have the problem, is my winamp 5.03 broken? Or is winamp
broken in general? :)
Thanks for the help.

Best way to render KML files using RXML templates
I want to produce google maps KML files which are baiscally XML files
with a KML extention. I''m using restful routes and respond_to. The
best way I''ve found is to use
respond_to do |format|
format.kml { render :action => "kml" }
will render a kml.rxml template I have but really I want to have
action.rxml rendered for kml files.
Is there are way to acheive this,

Why is respond_to always rending the RXML view?
I''m having a problem in Rails 2 where respond_to is always rendering the
RXML view even in the HTML rendering response. Can anyone tell me why
this might be happening? Here''s a code snippet:
respond_to do |accepts|
accepts.html
accepts.xml { render :action => ''show.rxml'', :layout => false}
end
If I change this to the following it works fine:

rxml template accidentally rendered within html layout
Hi,
I have the following in my controller:
def show
@quest = Quest.find(params[:id])
respond_to do |format|
format.html
format.xml
end
end
And in my routes:
map.resources :quests
I have two views for this action, quests/show.rhtml and
quests/show.rxml. Now what I would expect as a response to
''/quests/1.xml'' is that Rails sends, as XML, the rendered rxml
