Fixture question...
Ok, I''m pretty sure I''ve seen this done before. I have a fixture that
isn''t named the same as the table I want to insert the stuff into.
Whats the right way to go about this?!
Google has failed me! :(

Log rotation
Hi mongrel-herders,
I''m just wondering what fellow railsers use to rotate their logs in an
orderly fashion? I''d like to do something lightweight, i.e. (1) rename the
logfile (2, optional) create a new empty logfile and (3) send a signal to
each mongrel in the cluster and have them understand it''s time to reopen
their log file handles. This is what I do with apache and

How do I open and read/write to a file?
I need to process some text files quickly. I''ve not been able to find the
answer in the archive. The Ruby Standard Library site times out. Can
someone tell me where to find info on how to:
1. Get a list of filenames in a directory.
2. How to open a file.
3. How to read it a line at a time.

Question about self and private
Hi!
There''s something I don''t understand yet about static/private methods. I
hope someone can explain...
E.g.:
class SayHello
def hello(who)
puts "Hello, " + who + "!"
end
def self.say(words)
puts words
end
end
hello = SayHello.new
hello.hello "World" : Hello World!
hello.say "hi" : Error

How to put a form for one controller in another controlers view
Hello,
If anyone could help me out with this problem I''d appreciate it...
I''m making a database of event bookings, I have an events table and a
clients table. I''d like to include a form to create a new client in the
form for creating a new event.
This would update the parent form with the new client_id using AJAX
methods (see previous e-mail) so you''d

Accessing Session Object from a model
i realise that this goes against the basic idea of the MVC architecture,
but i''ve found myself in a situation where i need to get information
about the current user in a model & i''m not sure how to do it.
Basically, we have a product where each customer has their own profile
with data stored in a separate database. There are some tables in a

Mongrel + Apache 1.3 + OpenBSD
Hello,
I want to install a mongrel rails server with an apache in fronthead,
all that on OpenBSD. But OpenBSD is released with a homemade Apache
1.3.29 patched by the OpenBSD team. I really want to keep this version
of apache and I don''t want to change it to Apache 2.x (because of the
security and the license but it''s not the point here). But for having
mongrel, it has to be with

Sharing sessions between subdomains?
Hello,
I know how to share sessions between subdomains in PHP. Can anyone please guide me as to how I can share sessions using Ruby? Where can I set the value of domain for which the cookie is set?
I would like for a user to login on the home page and then go to blog.home.com and not have to login again.
Any guidance/pointers are appreciated.
Thanks''

Validation question
Hi all,
Is there a way to invoke validations at times other than save, create
and update? I know that I can do this by writing my own validation
checks using errors.add_[blah], but I''d like to leverage the existing
validation code.
What I have is two sets of fields in a record, set A and set B. Both
sets must be validated on record create. However, the trouble is that

FastCGI: Apache 1.x or 2 on new Debian System?
Hi,
I am just installing a new test environment, but this is just for
preparing the next one, which will be a production server.
I am doing a clean Debian Sarge 3.1 install with stable sources. I have
to decide if I install Apache 1.x or 2 now.
I have read that FastCGI is better supported/developed for Apache 1.x.
Is this (still) true? What is easier, more stable, etc? I want to run

Production deployment
Gang-
We are getting ready to launch our ROR application; the last item
remaining is the deployment platform. For testing, we had used Apache +
MOD_FastCGI. I am not that impressed with it; sometimes it has strange
effects. For example, when we start the application, for about 5 minutes
or so, the app is very unstable and it gets better over time.
My questions is .. should I go with (1)

mongrel.pid disappearing
Hi to everybody,
This my first post on the list.
I''m a newby of mongrel & rails, I''ve deployed my first project and
everything seems to work fine, the only problem I have is the following:
After about 1 or 2 days of the mongrel_rails daemon running the
mongrel.pid in the log directory disappears, the mongrel process is
still there running

Public Directory not accessible
Been trying to deploy my rails app on Redhat ES3, Apache2, FastCGI with
Plesk all day. Fun stuff. Basically, the issue that I can not solve has
to do with access to /public. None of my images, javascripts, etc. are
working in the app. Trying to access any of these results in a 404 (or
routing error if in developer mode). Oddly, the 404 file it displays is

Mongrel + mod_proxy URL issues
We have a Centos server with a number of virtual hosts, and my rails app
runs under one of those virtual hosts using mongrel_rails. The app lives
in /home/mydomain/railsapp where /home/mydomain/railsapp/public is the
rails root.
It runs under mongrel on port 8008, so to get to it users invoke the url
http://www.mydomain.com:8008/ - all is fine to this point.
Now I have some users whose

HTTP_CLIENT_IP and/or HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR are set by proxies so check
for these before falling back to REMOTE_ADDR. HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR may

more fcgi problems on apache
I''m having tons of problems with fcgi on apache2. The app didn''t
crash over the weekend when it wasn''t used. I ran it this morning and
it was fine. It''s an inhouse app so it wasn''t used for 3 days over the
weekend. It did however crash today. Does this sound like a bad fcgi
setup or just a very buggy fcgi/Apache combo?

[Tip] Introspection to determine if a column may be null
I still want to get this into Rails for all connection adaptors, but
for now I''ve hacked my own addition on for just PostgreSQL.
The following code extends every Column object returned by
MyModel.columns to support a new #required? method, which indicates if
the column may or may not be null.
The following is a huge hack - suggestions on a cleaner way to add this
functionality
