how to generate calculated db fields
I''m trying to generate a "page slug" i.e. a url sanitized id from
some text in my model that I want to be saved into the database and
I''m not seeing how I can do it.
The closest I''ve come to getting this to work has been...
class Page < ActiveRecord::Base
attr :name
before_save :generate_slug
def generate_slug
self.slug = self.name.gsub

acts_as_taggable smakdown
Okay, so I just realized there seems to be two acts_as_taggable
modules, the gem and the plugin
1. which came first?
2. what''s the difference? (internals, not ones a gem and ones a plugin)
3. which one is better? ;-)

Frustrated with RoR environment splintering
Why isnt the RoR community focusing on robust and scalable mod_perl style of
Apache environment, rather then splintering all over the place with
lighthttp, mongrel, WEBrick, SCGI, fcgi, etc???
Its frustrating as someone who is trying to migrate to RoR.
Its very unlikely I would ever get a contract to work on any webserver
except Apache, so it would seem logicaly to focus all our efforts to

Multiple (multiplexed) simultaneous ssh connections - Cygwin bug?
Hello,
?
I need to make many (>50) ssh connections from linux to cygwin at the same time. Using Windows 2000 Server (OpenSSH_4.3p2, OpenSSL 0.9.8b and updated cygwin) and Linux RHEL4 (OpenSSH_3.9p1, OpenSSL 0.9.7a).
?
It's been difficult to optimize many simultaneous connections. Here were some issues:
1.?????? On Windows XP/Professional, Microsoft intentionally cripples the TCP/IP stack.

Setting up FastCGI for RoR under Apache 1.3.34
All,
I have all of the components that I need to install RoR under FCGI for
Apache 1.3.34. I have:
mod_fcgi 2.4.2
fcgi 2.4.0 (developer''s kit)
ruby-fcgi-0.8.6
I am comfortable up to the point of installing mod_fcgi, however, I
don''t understand how fcgi and ruby-fcgi will be used by mod_fcgi.
How does mod_fcgi connect to fcgi and ruby-fcgi. I assume that there

Best way to set up for PHP websites
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
I am looking to set up a CentOS server for hosting a high traffic PHP
site (specifically Drupal 6).
I am trying to figure out what's the best way of setting up PHP. The
standard mod_php seems to not be a good solution, as it requires apache
to be in the prefork configuration, due to PHP not being thread safe.
Something like mod_fcgi seems to be

[PATCH] Fix <sys/time.h> for Linux 3.5.1
With Linux 3.5.1, 'make test' fails with:

usr/klibc/tests/select.c:31:14: error: ?FD_SETSIZE? undeclared (first use in this function)
usr/klibc/tests/select.c:31:14: note: each undeclared identifier is reported only once for each function it appears in
This is due to Linux commit 8ded2bbc1845e19c771eb55209aab166ef011243.

Troubleshooting "too many open files'
Hi,
Besides file-max and file-nr is there anywhere else I
should be looking to solve a C program giving me 'too
many open files' problem? (centos 3.4)
While the program is complaining here were the values
file-max

file-nr
3655 258 209632
lsof | wc -l
around 7000 during and about 1111 less after I closed
the application.
Any ideas? thx

libevent
Francis,
I read in the list archives back that a future EventMachine release
will support epoll on Linux (i.e., it''s in the trunk).
Better still, is there a possibility that EM will rely on libevent so
that it will be architecture independent (i.e. epoll on Linux, kqueue
on FreeBSD/Mac OS X, /dev/poll on Solaris)? This is how memcached is
implemented, and it would be helpful to be able

simulating provider in a module
Hi,
What is the best way for you to simulate a provider behavior in
modules ? For exemple if you have an webserver module and want to have
a apache2, lighthttpd prividers. How would you do so the call to the
modules functions stay like:
webserver::addvhost { ... }
and not
webserver::apache2::addvhost
Any best practices you can share ? I know that conditional include
would not work

Segmentation fault in Mongrel when run with --debug
I am having a problem with mongrel just stopping inside a
periodically_call_remote function so I ran mongrel with debug enabled
Mongrel seg faults after a few minutes
The mongrel filelog shows 5 files open when this happens. Same log files
that are open all the time.

Process hanging on 6.0-STABLE
Hi,
I work for a small company that makes radar systems for research
organisations and we use FreeBSD on the PCs for data acquisition and
processing. We have recently shifted to FreeBSD6/amd64 and one machine in
particular is exhibiting a strange problem.
The acquisition process is a Tcl interpreter with a largish chunk of C code
which talks to the hardware (via RS485 and a custom PCI card).

Model-less SQL results
I''m trying to get some stats from my database about my model, and I''m
not sure how to go about it.
If I have a model ''foo'' that has an attribute ''color'' and I want to
get some counts on this I could use the sql:
SELECT color, COUNT(*) AS count
FROM items
GROUP BY status
which would return something like:
+--------+-------+
| color |

need recommendations for apache configurations
I''m running a rails app on FedoraCore4 and so far have been using
lighttpd and fastcgi. I''ve decided to switch to apache because lighttpd
has been far too unstable, unpredictable, and slow. I don''t know if it''s
lighttpd or the combination of lighttpd and fastcgi but it''s just not
working for me. I need something that has been proven to work and

Shared Hosting Rails Sites ?
I can''t decide between a2hosting.com, successfulhosting.com, site5.com (which offers 11gb
of disk space for $8.77/month -- I''ll never use it), planetargon.com (which offers 1 gb
for $11/month), or railsplayground.com (which offers a gigabyte practically for free).
Any experiences you''d like to share?
Only a2 and planetargon list their gems on their web sites.

Measuring hosting performance: shared <--> vps <--> dedicated
Every app we build has to be deployed, and the price has to be right.
* dedicated servers start at 99$/m (Dreamhost, ..), and
shared hosting go up to 47$/m (PlanetArgon) or 60$/m (TextDrive)
* Railsplayground: 2$/m
* TextDrive dedicated servers : 1000$/m
Is there an objective way/tool to measure, test and compare the
performance of the hosters?

Run fastcgi in Apache 1.3, or proxy through lighttpd?
I''m working with a guy who has Apache 1.3 installed on his server, and
it''s not an option to simply use lighttpd for a Rails application I''m
helping him with. I''ve seen that Apache 2 apparently is crappy when
it comes to fastcgi, but 1.3 isn''t so bad. I can then either just run
my app straight in Apache, or I could proxy it through to lighttpd.
