Different value between R variance and definition of variance
Hi!
Let us define random variable:
> x = seq(0,1,length=100)
If we calculate variance following definition E[(x-E(x))^2] we get:
> mean( (x - mean(x))^2 ) # == mean(x^2) - mean(x)^2
0.08501684
And if we use internal R function var:
> var(x)
0.08587559
Can anyone tells me why the difference?

Are stub databases still supported in 1.0.21?
I have the following setup:
Databases:
/var/lib/xapian-omega/data/db1
/var/lib/xapian-omega/data/db2
/var/lib/xapian-omega/data/db3
Stub:
/var/lib/xapian-omega/data/default
The stub file "default" is a text file that contains the following:
auto /var/lib/xapian-omega/data/db1
auto /var/lib/xapian-omega/data/db2
auto /var/lib/xapian-omega/data/db3
Using the following returns nothing:

summary of the changes:

This version of tinc is compatible with 1.0pre8, 1.0 and later, but not
with earlier version of tinc.

Could not find rails (>= 0) amongst [bundler-1.0.21]
Hello, I''m new to Ruby and unix/linux development (although been
building .net apps for years).
I''ve almost completed my trek to install Rails ... looks like I have one
final hurdle. After installing rails I try the ''rails -v'' command and
it fails. Any help here would be deeply appreciated.
Here''s the output from my bash session:

[LLVMdev] LLVM ERROR: Cannot select
Duncan,
Thanks for getting back to me. I am not sure how to find the original
bitcode (and related Ada source code) that causes the truncate. This is the
error message that gcc gave me when I tried to compile an Ada source file
using dragonegg plugin (gcc -c -fplugin...).

'Extracting' plot area
Hi!
Does anyone know hot to save (to png, pdf, ...) only plot area. That is
without box around, titles, axis, ...
I tried: par(mar=c(0,0,0,0)) and it works for internal viewer (linux and
windows).
But when I save the image in png it adds that annoying margin around
plot area.
Any ideas?

Operator overloading
Hi!
I was just wondering is there anyway to overload operator for custom class.
For example:
I have two matrices A and B with same dimensions. I want to overload
operator '+' with my own function.
Or even better can I create my own (new) operator.
Example:
A+-B where '+-' would be some function.

Tine

New to List - just starting to learn R - question about reading in data
Hi, everyone,
I'm new to R and the List, and excited to be here. I am coming from a
background working in SPSS 16, primarily, which has a lot of easy
options for reading in data. I am working in R in an Ubuntu Linux
environment, and I'm learning with R Commander.
Now, here's my question. In my line of work, I'm used to getting data in
some kind of flat ASCII format with a

RSync uses root-directory when path value is missing!
Hi,
by accident I realized RSync (version 3.0.5, Ubuntu 9.10) uses the root
directory when the path value of a module is empty!
This can cause loss of data (in my case RSync tried to get and delete the
complete directory structure of a server instead of a FTP sub-directory,
but luckily I had set uid and gid to nobody already).
Is this solved in newer versions? If not, is there any bug-report?

How to write to a table column by column?
Dear friends.
Every loop of my program will result in a list that is very long, with a
structure similar to the one below:
Lst <- list(name="Fred", wife="Mary", daily.incomes=c(1:850))
Please notice the large size of "daily.incomes".
I need to store all such lists in a csv file so that I can easily view them
in Excel. Excel cannot display a row of more than 300
