Sudden authentication failures, hex dumps in log.samba
In a leap of faith, I decided to relax the iptables rules on our Samba
DC (4.0.5) on Wednesday, permitting some of our production clients to
actually authenticate against it (in addition to our W2k3R2 DC). After
all, there are no replication errors and no errors either in log.samba
or Windows event log, so things _should've_ been generally working, and
various test clients also have had no

Samba 4 install fails, no matter what I do
I can't install Samba 4 in practically any fashion.
I've tried Debian packages without much success (see
https://lists.samba.org/archive/samba-technical/2012-July/085301.html)
I later on figured out that it is not possible to use those packages
without using ntvfs (see
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=679678).
I've attempted to compile it from source under Debian

Synchronising password of some AD users with an external LDAP?
I'm in a situation where I should establish an external (i.e. non-AD)
LDAP directory for my employer for various web-based authentication
purposes. I don't think that Samba--or Windows AD, for that matter--in
and itself would be the best tool for this purpose; so far I've been
reviewing 389 DS, ApacheDS, OpenDJ and plain old OpenLDAP, but have made
no final decision yet.
Now however,

New Windows 8 RSAT and "OU=Domain Controllers" support?
Hello,
We have two DCs. One runs Windows 2003 R2, and the other Samba 4.0.5.
Forest functional level is Windows 2000 native.
I recently demoted (worked flawlessy now, which was a great relief),
rebuilt and re-promoted my Samba 4 DC, as my problems that I posted to
this list about two monts were still unresolved (see

Slow caching
I have just installed dovecot on a RedHat Enterprise 4 clone with exim

I think there's still something very sick with [host]'s IMAP
server: it just took a full five minutes to cache an attachment

Shortly come back.
I've created a 'Restricted' OU, a 'Restricted' group (i'm short in
fantasy, today ;) and i've created an 'mta' user, both user and group
in 'Restricted' OU, of course.

Freebsd 4 error DSN stat=Service Unavailable after dovecot install
Hello everyone,
I am getting an error message on FreeBSD 4 after I install dovecot. To
start off, I create two regular users, testuser and testuser1.
I send each user emails then I install dovecot. After installing
dovecot I set up the users in Maildir format then proceed to send them
emails and here is what shows up in the maillogs:

Lightweight LMTP daemon to avoid overkill MTA
I ended up 'hacking' LMTP support into the external spam filter. Someone else already contributed 'real' patches to implement LMTP support, so once I go live with this mail platform it should be stable.

Win95 .bat Issue
For some reason I'm getting Access denied errors when I try to execute a
.bat file that resides on a TRU64 samba share, from a Win95 command prompt.
The drive is mapped as x:\ & for the sake of testing, the directory has been
recursively set to 777 (chmod).
Command prompt output:

Lightweight LMTP daemon to avoid overkill MTA
Hi,
I was unclear in my question. The spam filter is only able to deliver mail over SMTP, not over LMTP.. So I would still need some kind of daemon that listens for SMTP and then offers incoming email to Dovecot's LMTP socket.

Sendmail burst of "rejecting connections" - why?
What's the reason for the burst of sendmail complaints below?
My CentOS 4.3 server only handles internal mail for my small network.
It doesn't handle Internet mail at all, so I guess I can't blame a
crack attempt for this. IPTables rules should prevent external
connections to everything except SSH's port 22.
I've looked through the other logs hoping that some other activity

Lightweight LMTP daemon to avoid overkill MTA
Hi,
My situation is as follows.
-An internet-facing spam filter relays email to destination mail server (Dovecot) with SMTP.
- Dovecot should take email and deliver it to user's mailboxes. I guess I'd need LMTP for this.
- An external SMTP relay is already in place. I am thinking of using Dovecot submission to relay to the external relaying cluster.
So, both relaying and routing are done

NT_STATUS_INTERNAL_DB_CORRUPTION messages in log.samba--proper course of action?
Hi all,
We've recently migrated from a separate DNS server that was dynamically
updated with BIND's update-policy, using a manually generated
tkey-gssapi-keytab (plus a second server functioning as an ordinary
slave to the first), to BIND9_DLZ. The setup predated Samba's AD DC
support and BIND's DLZ support, and was originally established because
even though we needed AD, we were
