Problem with messages with long lines
Hello dear mailing list readers, Recently I am experimenting a problem trying to retrieve messages over a POP3 protocol. Everything goes right until the POP3 client tries to retrieve a message that contains one or more long lines ? lines as long as 3000 characters or even more. The client (Outlook 2003 and 2007) stops on that message until timeout. I have opened a connection manually to see

Strange problem with icons on the desktop
Thanks everyone for helping me get the home directories working over SMB, especially Ben Ford for his workaround for the Xauth and GDM. Now I've got a problem that, most likely, nobody's ever noticed before... or is something specific to me. I've got a Linux client, and a Samba server, and a Windows 2000 server, both set up EXACTLY the same. I've got a test user and the home

No program start icon
I installed World of Wisdom Birth Chart Interpreter 2 on my wife's laptop without any problems. Then her laptop was stolen so I had to reinstall. The re-installation did not put a start-up icon on her desktop, so she has to navigate to ?Browse C/ Drive? and click on the .exe icon to run it. She is running Ubuntu 7.10. I tried the same program on my Ubuntu 8.04 with the same results. Is

Smth. about "Icon=" option in .desktop files created by WINE
When I install some Win32 application using WINE, it creates associated menu item file for it, located at ~/.local/share/applications/wine/Programs/***Program title***/***Program shortcut.desktop***. Well, inside this file I see option named "Icon", where path to some icon is set. Sometimes this path points to some PNG image file, but sometimes it points to something I don't have a

Here is log activity when user 'peter' logs in (with Ubuntu client) and is authenticated by AD server. No icon desktop on XP to Samba PDC?
Now that I've been able to get Win XP added to a Samba PDC and users log in, Windows results in a no-icon solid-color background as the default. I can switch to Windows Classic desktop and get the icons back. What change can I make to Samba to permit Windows to present either Windows new or Classic desktop mode? Thanks. Scott

run R script automatically by double-clicking WinXP desktop icon
I've written a simple script that does some surveillance analysis on daily counts of walk-in clinic visits, for our county health department. (Actually, Michael Hohle's surveillance package does all the work; I just customized it a little to work with the way our data are recorded.) The output consists of a graph and a little table. My colleague will run it once in a while, on

CentOS 4.5: Automounted USB disks eventually stop appearing on desktop
This is just a minor annoyance, but I wondered if anyone has any insights. When I first boot the system and log in to Gnome, and then plug in e.g. a USB stick or compact flash card, I get an icon for it on the desktop. I can right-click on this icon to "eject" the filesystem, etc. Eventually, though, for no obvious reason, this stops working and I no longer get an icon when I insert a

reliability of mounting shares while login

My environments are: 2 Microsoft Domain Controllers + a separate fileserver and Ubuntu 18.04 or 22.04 as clients. My other tested environment is one Microsoft Server 2019 (as domain controller and
