fstrim on BTRFS
Hi! With 3.2-rc4 (probably earlier), Ext4 seems to remember what areas it trimmed: merkaba:~> fstrim -v /boot /boot: 224657408 bytes were trimmed merkaba:~> fstrim -v /boot /boot: 0 bytes were trimmed But BTRFS does not: merkaba:~> fstrim -v / /: 4431613952 bytes were trimmed merkaba:~> fstrim -v / /: 4341846016 bytes were trimmed Is it planned to add this feature to BTRFS

[RFC] New attempt to a better "btrfs fi df"
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi all, this is a new attempt to improve the output of the command "btrfs fi df". The previous attempt received a good reception. However there was no a general consensus about the wording. Moreover I still didn''t understand how btrfs was using the disks. A my first attempt was to develop a new command which shows how the disks

/home on BTRFS on SSD, now highly fragmenting virtuoso database - use autodefrag?
Hi! Today I converted my /home from Ext4 to BTRFS by reformatting and copying all over again. I created the filesystem with -l 16384 -n 16384 -d single -m single on an logical volume Intel SSD 320 and mount with compress=lzo, spacecache. Current state: merkaba:~> btrfs filesystem show failed to read /dev/sr0 Label: ''home'' uuid: […] Total devices 1 FS bytes used

Very slow samba file transfer speed... any ideas ?
Hi, I have btrfs volume, shared via samba. I have a directory of documents that I want to backup on my server. win7 reports a maximum of ~3.10MB/s transfer transferring the same directory on a ext4 samba share I get 25MB/s + Any ideas? Is it like that because of how btrfs works and is setup? Thanks, -- To unsubscribe from this list: send the line "unsubscribe linux-btrfs" in the body

[PATCH][BTRFS-PROGS][V3] btrfs filesystem df
Hi Chris, this serie of patches updated the command "btrfs filesystem df". I update this command because it is not so easy to get the information about the disk usage from the command "fi df" and "fi show". This patch was the result of some discussions on the btrfs mailing list. Many thanks to all the contributors. From the man page (see 2nd patch): [...] The

How does btrfs behave on checksum mismatch?
I came across the tidbit that ZFS has a contract guarantee that the data read back will either be correct (the checksum computed over the data read from the disk matches the checksum stored on disk), or you get an I/O error. Obviously, this greatly reduces the probability that the data is invalid. (Particularly when taken in combination with the disk firmware''s own ECC and checksumming.)

BTRFS fails defragging
Hi folks, I''m using Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal with # uname -r 3.5.0-24-generic And it seems I cannot defrag : # filefrag /boot/initrd.img-3.5.0-24-generic /boot/initrd.img-3.5.0-24-generic: 3 extents found # btrfs filesystem defrag /boot/initrd.img-3.5.0-24-generic # echo $? 20 # filefrag /boot/initrd.img-3.5.0-24-generic /boot/initrd.img-3.5.0-24-generic: 3 extents found Any clue

Filesystem creation in "degraded mode"
I''ve had a go at determining exactly what happens when you create a filesystem without enough devices to meet the requested replication strategy: # mkfs.btrfs -m raid1 -d raid1 /dev/vdb # mount /dev/vdb /mnt # btrfs fi df /mnt Data: total=8.00MB, used=0.00 System, DUP: total=8.00MB, used=4.00KB System: total=4.00MB, used=0.00 Metadata, DUP: total=153.56MB, used=24.00KB Metadata:

Trying to mount RAID1 degraded with removed disk -> open_ctree failed
Hi, I have setup a RAID1 using 3 devices (500G each) on separate disks. After removing one disk physically the filesystem cannot be mounted in degraded nor in recovery mode. When putting the disk back in the filesystem can be mounted without errors. I did a cold-swap (powercycle after removal/insertion of the disk). Here are the details: - latest kernel 3.2.1 and btrfs-tools on xubuntu

Option LABEL
Hallo, linux-btrfs, please delete the option "-L" (for labelling) in "mkfs.btrfs", in some configurations it doesn''t work as expected. My usual way: mkfs.btrfs -d raid0 -m raid1 /dev/sdb /dev/sdc /dev/sdd ... One call for some devices. Wenn I add the option "-L mylabel" then each device gets the same label, and therefore some other programs

Help interpreting RAID1 space allocation
I''ve created a test volume and copied a bulk of data to it, however the results of the space allocation are confusing at best. I''ve tried to capture the history of events leading up to the current state. This is all on a Debian Wheezy system using a 3.10.5 kernel package (linux-image-3.10-2-amd64) and btrfs tools v0.20-rc1 (Debian package 0.19+20130315-5). The host uses an

Can't replace a faulty disk of raid1
Hello, I had a raid1 btrfs (540GB) on vanilla 3.6.3, a disk failed, and removed it at power off, plugged in a new one, partitioned it (to 110GB, by error), and added it to btrfs. I tried to remove the missing device, and it said "Input/output error" after a while. Next attempts simply gave "Invalid argument". I repartitioned, rebooted the system, and made the partition grow:

Understanding metadata efficiency of btrfs
I''ve run a little wired benchmark on comparing Btrfs v0.19 and XFS: There are 2000 directories and each directory contains 1000 files. The workload randomly stat a file or chmod a file for 2000000 times. And the number of stat and chmod are 50% and 50%. I monitor the number of disk read requests #Disk Write Requests, #Disk Read Requests, #Disk Write Sectors, #Disk Read

btrfs-raid questions I couldn't find an answer to on the wiki
I''m currently researching an upgrade to (raid1-ed) btrfs from mostly reiserfs (which I''ve found quite reliable (even thru a period of bad ram and resulting system crashes) since data=ordered went in with 2.6.16 or whatever it was. (Thanks, Chris! =:^)) on multiple md/raid-1s. I have some questions that don''t appear to be addressed well on the wiki, yet, or where

Feeback on RAID1 feature of Btrfs

About the test machine, it''s a kvm vm running an up-to-date archlinux with linux 3.7 and btrfs-progs 0.19.20121005. #uname -a Linux seblu-btrfs-1 3.7.0-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Dec 11 15:05:50 CET 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux Filesystem was created with : # mkfs.btrfs -L
