Suggested strategies for testing a gem against Rails 3.x and Rails 4?
I''ve seen a few examples of dummy Rails apps (for testing, so they live
under test or spec dirs, typically) for use with the Appraisals gem that
supposedly work with both Rails 3.x and Rails 4, but they seem hackish and
not fully functional. It is somewhat expected, as it is a stripped down
Frankenstein monster that is trying to be compatible with various versions
of Rails 3 as well

noun-verb vs verb-noun aka dogs black vs black dogs
Wow. I wasn't expecting such a voluminous reply -- some I agree with and
some I don't.
My apologies for an equally voluminous reply.

Is there an easy way of querying an active record for a maximum column
value? I need to do queries like:

active_model_serializers, more than one level deep of associations, specifying serializers per association
I am assuming this an appropriate place to discuss this, but if it isn''t my
apologies- just let me know. Just a Rails 4-ish thing.
Am attempting to pull AMS (active_model_serializers), strong_parameters,
and the "permitter" strategy that Adam Hawkins is using:

Code so far is here (in the

Repost: Pluralization of non-noun names
People,
I didn''t get an answer to this before so I am trying again:
I could change an existing "policy" table to "policies" with no drama
but the are a number of related tables ie:
p_2quot
p_addr
p_cc
p_cs
p_direct
p_div
p_exss

Installing Dreamfall: The Longest Journey - help needed!
Hi guys,
I'm trying to make this game work following HowTo that I found here:
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?bShowAll=true&bIsQueue=false&bIsRejected=false&sClass=version&sTitle=&sReturnTo=&iId=5305
But after installing it and trying to run the game an error pops out saying "Failed to initialize Direct3D. Aborting." I don't know how to fix

Help getting The Longest Journey to run.
Hi,
The game (http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?appId=1937) currently
won't run on Wine -- it gets into the main menu screen, but crashes when
you want to start.
I have access to the source code for this game, but virtually no
experience with Wine. If someone wants to make the game run, I can help
out with that, answer questions about it, look at source, etc. or even
make patches.

Pluralization of non-noun names
People,
I have an insurance company client and for the last eleven years I have
wanted to completely redevelop their system from scratch. However, the
boss has never been interested in hiring a team to develop the new
system (partly because of the cost and partly because of some famous and
expensive development failures in the industry) and has always insisted
on incremental development of the

autolog: easily debug-like logging on the fly in your Rails app
If it helps anyone developing Rails apps or gems, I wrote a shortcut for
set_trace_func, so next time you want to just add a line before and after
some function you are trying to debug you can have Ruby temporarily output
every line, method, etc. executed. Also, it lets you define the format, use
other loggers, etc. via a proc/lambda define, since you might not like the
default format.

how to automatically select certain columns using for loop in dataframe
Hi,
I am trying to display / print certain columns in my data frame that share
certain condition (for example, part of the column name). I am using for
loop, as follow:
# below is the sample data structure
all.data <- data.frame( NUM_A = 1:5, NAME_A = c("Andy", "Andrew", "Angus",
"Alex", "Argo"),
NUM_B = 1:5, NAME_B =

rarefy a matrix of counts
Hi all,
I have a matrix of counts for objects (rows) by samples (columns). I aimed
for about 500 counts in each sample (I have about 80 samples) and would now
like to rarefy these down to 100 counts in each sample using simple random
sampling without replacement. I plan on rarefying several times for each
sample. I could do the tedious looping task of making a list of all objects

'weaver' package problem
Hi Seth,
The possibility of caching computations would be a great boon when
one is iteratively refining a paper; so I'm most grateful for your
work on this. Unfortunately I have a problem to report:

Proper noun stemming
Hi All
I was wondering if anyone had a solution for the following problem.
I user QueryParser to stem my documents before adding them to a
database. During the stemming process I would like to find a way of
keeping proper nouns that span two or more words together as a phrase.
For example "New York" or "Gordon Brown" or "Prime Minister" get spilt
up. I see

1.0.2 release candidates
Hello Mongrels,
Release candidates for Mongrel 1.0.2 and its dependencies are now
available. Note that gems are now signed, so please add the Mongrel
public certificate via:
$ wget http://rubyforge.org/frs/download.php/25325/mongrel-public_cert.pem
$ gem cert --add mongrel-public_cert.pem
Now you can verify and install the candidates via gem install:
$ sudo gem install mongrel

TST is right out
Hi Zed,
I checked in a pure-Ruby URI classifier to Mongrel trunk. Ola''s Java
port of the TST had some bug, and I don''t think it''s necessary in the
first place. The Ruby classifier is around 25 lines instead of the
400-odd lines for the C extension and the 200-odd for the Java
extension. It uses a Regexp which is perhaps shady:
@matcher = Regexp.new(routes.map do

1.1.2
Hi all,
There is a bug with Mongrel on JRuby 1.0.3 that the JRuby guys want
fixed before they release it.
If it''s ok with people I''d like to fix that, revert (at least for now)
the proxy response change, and tag that as 1.1.2 and release it.
Anything wrong with this plan?

Mongrel wiki?
Dear Mongrels,
The same questions keep coming up over and over on the list, which is
ok, but not really optimal. If we added a wiki to the Mongrel site to
handle FAQs, what wiki should it be?
Required features would be:
* Spam protection
* Doesn''t look shitty
I would probably spring for Trac (and also migrate the bugtracker) if
noone else has opinions, but I''m sure some of
