CentOS vs RedHat releases
In comparing CentOS to RedHat releases, it seems to me CentOS is the
Desktop/Workstation class distro from RedHat. Does the CentOS project
then not have a Server class distro, or am I missing something? Granted,
most any operating system can act as a server, but there are some
fundamental components of a server-class OS that help is stand out versus
a workstation version.
Thanks for any

user-space heartbeat ptaches from suse
Hi everyone.
Does anyone know why the user-space heartbeat (linux-ha) patches
from SuSE / Novell are not commited to the mainline ocfs2 source
tree? Or are they?
Is there an easy way (which does not break the distros package
management) to apply these?
Thanks,
Christian

Natulius CD burner does not accept my 700Mb CD-R disks
When I try to burn anything to cd, I get a message to insert a CD large
enough for my file (normally an ISO image). Doesn't matter if the iso
image is a 600Mb Centos ISO or a 48Mb DSL ISO. Same warning.
My CD-Rs are Memorex 700MB/80min 52x disks that work just fine on XP
systems.
So what am I missing configuration-wise?

zfs and backup applications
Hi,
I was wondering if there have been any conversations with backup vendors like Veritas or EMC regarding better integration with ZFS. While I understand they can use the "native" mode of reading files from the filesystem, it would be great if there were agents that had options like making a snapshot and storing a "zfs backup" datastream that could be used for zfs restore.

What changes are you looking to make? Most times the pam.d/foo files
are not where you want to set things.

ZFS versus VxFS as file system inside Netbackup 6.0 DSSU
Hello experts,
We have a large implementation of Symantec Netbackup 6.0 with disk staging. Today, the customer is using VxFS as file system inside Netbackup 6.0 DSSU (disk staging).
The customer would like to know if it is best to use ZFS or VxFS as file system inside Netbackup disk staging in order to get the best performance possible.
Could you provide some information regarding this

Customer questions
A few questions:
1. How does ZFS compare to Luster?
2. Is ZFS compatible with Veritas Netbackup Suite?
3. Does ZFS support bare metal restore (BMR)?
Pointers welcome!!

CentOS 4.4 and other software?
I just installed CentOS 4.4 on my laptop, having good experience with
Debian, Fedora Core 5, and RHEL4. I really like 4.4's overall appearance
(meshing of RHEL4 and FC5), but what I have yet to figure out is how to
access repositories for applications that are not part of the default
install, such as ncftp. I invoked and updated yum, but it had no idea.
I would also like to see what

Bare Metal vs virtualization
Hello to all:
I know this list is generally Linux-only, but I figured I'd try to
gain wisdom from those with hard-core Windows needs, too.
I was recently pricing out a high-end desktop system for a user who
will doing a lot of CAD, Matlab, SolidWorks, and other apps that will
utilize a lot of number crunching and video.
The quote for the desktop (64-bit Vista is likely), which included 12

rsync without a "data pool"
Good day to all. I would like to congradulate you all on a brilliant
product. I have been watching this list for some time as I find the
topics most informative.
I have a carefully crafted question that I would like to ask you guys.
But first some info to help give you a better picture. I am using a RH
9.0 box and the latest rsync to backup different servers to an offsite
data facility. The

Backup Question?
This may be slightly off topic.
I am using FreePBX, and using it's backup feature.
Here is the question part:
I would like to copy my backup off the asterisk server.

Push the backup from asterisk to another server using STFP or FTP?
Pull the backups from asterisk from another server using SFTP or other?

Beta question - initial install of packages
When I used Fedora Core 5, and got to the screen for packages to install, I had
the option to Customize which packages I wanted to install, but never an option
to install EVERYTHING. That annoyed me.
When I use Redhat Enterprise 4, and get to the screen for packages to install, I
have the option to Customize which packages I want to install. That leads me

Help with streaming audio...
I recently installed Icecast2 on my XP Home Laptop. My goal is to get the
audio from my vhf/uhf scanner, whose audio out is connected to the laptop's mic
port, out as a stream so I can listen to it when away from home (like from
work).
I can hear the scanner fine through the laptop's speakers, but although I've
read the documentation for the Icecast2 server configuration, I'm

Out of disk space at 2 GB?
On an ext3 filesystem, what would cause the system to claim it is out of
disk space for a program writing information to disk, when df -h shows
ample GB available and the file is being written to local disk rather than
an nfs-mounted filesystem?
I believe the hard drive is good.
Ideas welcome.
Thanks.

Hi,
When attempting to restore to LINUX RHEL5 - OCFS2 filesystem received the

LVM, usb drives, Active Directory
I have a client with a handful of USB drives connected to a CentOS
box. I am charged with binding the USB drives together into a single
LVM for a cheap storage data pool (10 x 1 TB usb drives = 10 TB cheap
storage in a single mount point).
The next fun piece is how to incorporate that storage space into an
existing Active Directory structure to apply AD acls for limited
access.
I'd rather
