legacy database and finder_sql nightmare!
This is my first rails app with a legacy database and I''m having a
terrible time getting the models set up correctly. I have an order
table that has a primary field named order_number. I have a name table
with a primary of item_number. These two tables are liked by the
item_number and the order_number, but not as you might think. If the
order_number is 2500, then each entry in

2 belongs_to to the same parent table
Hello!
I have 2 table: users and buddies
User: id, name, ...
Buddy: id, user_id, user_buddy_id, ...
So if you have 2 users 1,jack and 2,fred and fred is a buddy of jack,
there is a Buddy object: id=1, user_id=1, user_buddy_id=2
I can declare only one belongs_to in Buddy and one has_many in User. And
there is conflict if I had the second one (the first one is discarded)

foreign_key setting ignored
I''m having a spot of bother creating a ''has_many'' relationship between
two legacy database tables. The relationship is ''company'' table has many
linked records in the ''contact'' table. Iv''e used ''generate scaffold'' on
these tables and everything is fine. I then decided to define the
relationship in the

Defining model classes for enumerations
I have several tables for enumerations. They all have the same content:
id, name, position. I''d like to avoid the tedious work of defining a
class for each one explicitly. Not least, in order to avoid clutter in
the model directory.
Here''s what I''ve come up with:
class EnumRecord < ActiveRecord::Base
def self.define_enums(*enums)
enums.each do |spec|

Multi-databases support
Hi,
While I was hacking ovirt-server, I have found that it's currently
restricted to Postgres DB. Even if I like postgres for serious work on a
server, I really prefer to hack/dev locally on a Sqlite or MySQL DB.
I have googled on rails in order to find a good answer for the "foreign
key problem" which forces OVirt to stay on pg. I have found a plugin on

suggest for "ambiguous column" when JOIN associated tables
Today I face with incorrect behavior in ActiveRecord.
It take place when I try to use :include parameter for .find method.
Where are two typical cases:
1. You have record with self-referential joins

Legacy DB Guide?
I''m looking at using RoR for a system tying in with a legacy DB that
can''t be modified (other apps using etc). It uses stored procs
extensively.
Searching for some kind of a guide / tutorial etc for handling this
kind of situation I''m only coming up with a bunch of 2 paragraph
articles saying "RoR is great! but there might be some trouble with
legacy systems".

Edge Rails namespaced routing
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone came across a similar scenario when working
with namespaced routes with edge rails.
Consider an application with controllers customers and products that
also have other resources.
map.resources :customers do |customer|
customer.resources :notes
customer.resources :tags
end
map.resources :products do |product|
customer.resources :notes
customer.resources

Eager load associations in Oracle problem with more than 1000 records
I think Rails 2.1 introduced a bug when eager loading of associations
with Oracle. In 2.1 ActiveRecord loads the included table with a big
''IN'' query: ''where association.id in (1, 2, 3, 4...)''. The problem
is that Oracle has a hard limit of 1000 values in an IN clause. I get
this error:
''OCIError: ORA-01795: maximum number of expressions in a list

Authentication design/ideas
Hi all,
I''m using acts_as_authenticated for the front end facing part of my
site. I have a model called Customer. I now want to protect the admin
sides of things. I am thinking of using Ezra''s acl plugin
(http://opensvn.csie.org/ezra/rails/plugins/dev/acl_system2/README)
for this. My only problem is that I don''t want the model for admin
users to be called Customer,

Making attachment_fu polymorphic
I am working on a small model mixin called attachment_kung to make
attachment_fu polymorphic, so you no longer need a different table and
Model class for every associated attachment (Productimage, Ad_doc,
etc). All you really need is one model and table to handel all your
attachments - in some cases, anyway. I have the code working, but have
run into one small hitch that I can''t seem to

[Req] polymorphic associations howto
Hi people,
I''m looking into polymorphic associations as a way to cleanup some
messy parts of my code. I think they will allow me to do exectly what
I need, but since there''s little to none written on this subject, I''d be
delighted if someone could shed some light on this. Especially what
the different options and needed table structures need to be.
Thanks,

Camping with Dr. Nic
Campers. Dr. Nic.
The new migrations in Camping''s trunk are very nice. They also open
the door (just an inch) to using Dr. Nic''s Magic Models with Camping.
Here''s my stab at ''er:

Run that against Camping trunk. Don''t forget to `sudo gem install

Concatenated key
Hi all,
I started playing a couple days ago with Rails and it find it very
interesting.
But I''m a bit stuck with making it work with a concatenated primary key.
I want to use my own names for the DB fields and I''m using SQL Server
2005.
My tables look roughly like this:
CREATE TABLE USERS (
USR_ID VARCHAR(25) NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY,
USR_PASS VARCHAR(25)
)
CREATE TABLE

Hi all,
Suppose I have a vector

I want to print the statement
"The fruits in the basket are: Apple, Orange, Pear, Banana, Mango"
If I do:
print(paste('The fruits in the basket are:',Fruits))
The output is:

Problems with STI in has_many/belongs_to in Rails 1.1
I have a problem that surfaced in my attempt to upgrade my application
to Rails 1.1.
We have a STI model on the "belongs_to" side of a has_many/belongs_to
relationship. All my unit tests for this model pass, and the
relationships all seem to work fine.
But in my functional tests, I''m getting errors. I''ve traced it back
into the call to the has_many

Crazy @55 Inheritance

Within this table, there are type "users", "managers".... etc. So, basic
STI.
Now, I want a "user" to have one manager, but a "manager" to have many
"users".
Since I don''t want to use HABTM... how do I set this relationship up seeing
that :has_one, :belongs_to and :has_many don''t

Instance methods in runner?
I am having a devil of a time with some runner actions.
I can not seem to call any instance methods on found records.
