Migrate from MS-AD to Samba4
Hi all, This might be a silly question, but what is the best way to migrate an existing AD domain to promote Samba4 as the domain controller. Alex Ferrara Director Receptive IT Solutions P 0403 604 604 F (02) 4822 7700 E alex at receptiveit.com.au W www.receptiveit.com.au

ADS member server to 2008 R2
Hi all, I have a strange problem, and I can't seem to solve it. I have set up a Ubuntu 9.10 server with samba+kerberos to be an ADS member server. The PDC was a 2003 SBS server, and all was well. Recently I added a 2008 R2 server standard to the mix, and promoted it as a domain controller. Ever since I did this, the samba server stops working daily. I have updated to 3.4.7 out of the

Unable to join new domain controller to Samba4 domain
Hi folks, Everything is working great and I am not having any issues with the three domain controllers that I currently have set up. We are migrating from Puppet to Ansible for configuration management, and I decided to create a playbook that will do all the things necessary to set up a DC and join the domain. I have found that in the domain joining process, an error stops replication from

Extending a Samba4 domain to multi-site
Hi folks, I have been using Samba4 as an Active Directory domain controller with many clients since about 2013, and it is the best. I have recently been asked to extend the AD domain in a clients office, to 6 other physical sites. Rather than reinvent the wheel, what is the best way to accomplish this given the current support in Samba4? Alex Ferrara Director Receptive IT Solutions

Joining DC
I am having some trouble joining a new samba4 server as a DC. I am pretty sure this stems from trying to use OpenChange and subsequently removing it. The new samba4 machine is running 4.0.7 and the existing is running 4.0.1. I am a little hesitant to do an in-place upgrade of the last working DC, so I wanted a replica to fall back on in case things go bad. Any help would be appreciated. On the

Provision new domain from Windows AD
Hi everyone, What I want to achieve is to provision a new domain with the users, groups and group policy of an existing AD domain. Is this what I would use the vampire function for? Am I on the wrong track? Alex Ferrara Director Receptive IT Solutions

Shared mailbox help needed
Hi everyone, I am in the middle of a migration from Cyrus 2.4 to Dovecot 2.1.7, and I have everything mostly working. I set up Dovecot to authenticate against Active Directory (Samba4) using PAM and SSSD, and have also used the fantastic cyrus2dovecot perl script to do a test migration of all our mail, and that is now working flawlessly. I have the issue of shared IMAP accounts to deal with, and

Rsync backup issues using relative paths and LVM snapshots
Hi everyone, I have been using rsync for years to perform off-site backups, and have recently come up with a problem that is starting to hurt my head. I am at the point where I am starting to think that there is a method to achieve my desired outcome that I cannot see. First, a bit of history. I usually just set up a script that runs many rsync commands in sequence to perform the desired

Web development at the speed of light (A Camping Success Story)
Hi all, Friday. Noon. I''m tasked with writing a small web front end. LDAP validation required. Form data validation required. I have to post form data to an external URL because of retarded licensing issues. And validate the result using screen scraping. I had the initial version done and online that night. Some finishing touches were added this afternoon. THANK YOU CAMPING!!! Dan

visual C++ 6 semi-success story
I use visual C++ 6 in wine to build an app. I've been leaving MSDEV open to see how long it'll stay up. It was fine for several days, but after a week, it lost the ability to compile. (No big problem, but it'd be nice to narrow this down someday, assuming it doesn't do the same thing on Windows.)

I am happily report that with Wine-20040121.tar.gz Report Smith+BDE installs flawlessly and after setting up the data source, our keygen also work flawlessly. With the last month' Wine-20031212.tar.gz, wine just segfaulted when I tried to run

ATA186 through NAT, over Dialup, success story
Hi, I'm away at a conference in Amsterdam. My home is in Cambridge in the UK. On a whim, I tossed an ATA186 and a phone into my bags before leaving home. I was able to plug my ATA186 into a LAN here at the conference and was connected to my home Asterisk in a few seconds. Total time from unzipping my bag to talking to home no more than 15 seconds. OK, so the kit could be more portable,

Success story: updating LG DVD firmware using Wine
Hello, I have an LG GSA-4163B drive. Recently I had many problems with the drive not recognizing correct writing speed, and locking up hard on many DVD-RW media. When I bought the drive, the latest firmware was at version A100, and it was available bundled with a DOS flasher. Unfortunately LG dropped DOS support, and now all the firmware updates are Windows only. As the drive was barely usable

Success story: Vixen christmas lite app
http://computerchristmas.com/ForumBoard/read.php?f=2&i=198&t=193 said Vixen worked with Wine, so I tried it, and sure enough, it seems to run. It's kind of cool to see .real net apps working with Wine. Here's how I tested: $ rm -rf .wine $ wget http://www.vixenlights.com/releases/Vixen%202.0%20Release.zip $ wget http://kegel.com/wine/winetricks $ sh ~/winetricks corefonts

success story with EXTLINUX 6.04 --> why not release it?
Hello SYSLINUX. I am happy to report that EXTLINUX 6.04 from git as well as Testing/6.04-pre1 is running fine here on ext4 and XFS root partitions. I actually had troubles with v6.03 when dealing with XFS, that seemed to be broken (could not find ldlinux.c32). Why not release 6.04? Thanks

Centos 5.3 NetworkManager success story
In the past I have not been able to use NetworkManager. It failed to provide a connection to my WPA-PSK AP (hey don't argue WPA-PSK security with me, I helped right the spec on it, and wrote the paper on the attack on it! It works here, as I use it.). So I have continued to use my set of scripts and hand-coded wpa_supplicant.conf file. So I decided to give NetworkManager another chance
