Portfolio Optimization
Hi, I'm an R newbie and I've been struggling with a optimization problem for the past couple of days now. Here's the problem - I have a matrix of expected payouts from different stock option strategies. Each column in my matrix represents a different stock and each row represents the return to the strategy given a certain market move. So the rows are not a time series of percentage

monotonic factors
Hello all, I have an ordered factor that I would like to include in the linear predictor of a binomial glm, where the estimated coefficients are constrained to be monotonic. Does anyone know how to do this? I've tried using an ordered factor but this does not have the desired effect, an (artificial) example of this follows; n <- 100 strings <- sample(c("low",

Most of the "simple" tasks worked well so far, and I may be able to add a few recipies to the Wiki when I find time to do so. However, is there any way

GLM output for deviance and loglikelihood
It has always been my understanding that deviance for GLMs is defined by; D = -2(loglikelihood(model) - loglikelihood(saturated model)) and this can be calculated by (or at least usually is); D = -2(loglikelihood(model)) As is done so in the code for 'polr' by Brian Ripley (in the package 'MASS') where the -loglikehood is minimised using optim; res <-

New transactional enterprise e-commerce web site
We are close to releasing a high-volume, multi-lingual, e-commerce site in Ruby on Rails that has previously been written in an alternative Java framework (e.g. servlets and JSP). This is a real-time 24/7 betting and gaming web site based out of Gibraltar in Europe. When we embarked on this project, we really wanted to find examples of other high-volume web sites that had adopted RoR. We did

Callback when available
Hi All, I would like to implement a call-back option when called user is busy. Consider this scenario: 1. A caller is calling a number which is busy on another call. 2. The system will prompt the caller ("press 3 to be called back" etc.) to be called back when called user is available. 3. Caller hangs up. >>problem: how to monitor called user status after calling user has

OT: firewalls
What is everyone using for a firewall? I'm currently using www.astaro.com but their recent releases have soured me on ASL as a practical solution on my hardware (1.2MHz Athlon, 30G, and 256M). I only have 4 computers going through the firewall wall but it's consistently at 50% cpu load. There is very little network traffic (<10k bits per second on the wan connection, < 40k

Access to shares too slow
Hi all, we recently moved our offices to a bigger place. Therefore all our servers and network electronic had to be turned off... :) Well, I know it sounds odd but after the move Samba is much slower serving the shares and users have to wait ages for the information to be copied or moved across the network. In some cases, Windows desktops seem to freeze until the data is retrieved from the

Strange DNAT problems with shorewall 1.4.8
I''ve had some issues with my network, and I''ve had to reconfigure my Gibraltar CD. It runs shorewall 1.4.8, and I have a 2-interface setup, so I downloaded the relevant files from the install page. Masq and such works, but I''m having a problem with my port forwarding. It works for port 22, but it doesn''t seem to work for any other port. I''ve turned
