Managing /etc/yum.conf
Hi, It''s easy enough to modify, say, the "exclude" variable in /etc/yum.conf with something like: augeas { yum_exclude_kernel: context => ''/files/etc/yum.conf/main'', changes => ''set exclude kernel*'' } However, I''d like a more flexible system where I can "build" the list of excludes from

calling_module vs module_name ?
In using Hiera, what is the difference between calling_module and module_name? Which is should be used? :hierarchy: - %{environment}/%{calling_module}/common - %{environment}/%{module_name}/common Thanks -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Puppet Users" group. hiera - anything better than empty string?
Hi, starting to use hiera in earnest now (still on puppet 2.6 but planning an upgrade to 3.x this summer). the heirarchy looks for fqdn, then network_eth0, then ''default''. Some of our subnets don''t want to set http_proxy environment variables, the rest do. so default.json has a ''http_proxy_url'' key in it, but I want to exclude it for 10.9.8.7. Is

Hiera Automatic Parameter Lookup Question
This may be a dumb question, but here goes So I''m running on Puppet 3.1.1 on RHEL5, and i''ve been using Hiera since 2.5/2.6 ish and it''s been great!! I was reading up on Automatic Parameter Lookups and would love to use it for my modules. But I can''t seem to ever get Hiera/Puppet to load the value i''ve set in my yaml files. I feel like I must be

Puppet ignores hiera completely
I''m not sure at all what''s going on here, but I''ve spent a lot of time reading over the puppet hiera docs and setting everything up, but when I run puppet agent it just seems to ignore the hiera setup completely. Both the puppet master and agent nodes have exactly the same versions of puppet and hiera (installed via the official puppet APT repository). I''ve

Making a system user member of a Puppet managed group
Hi All, I have a particular requirement where a Puppet managed group needs to have several members that are either local and not managed by Puppet (e.g. mysql) or they reside in LDAP. Apart from running an exec call to "groupmems", is there another way to achieve this? Thanks in advance. Gonzalo -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups

hiera broken in puppet-3
is anybody using hiera with puppet-3 and per-module hierarchy? it seems calling_module/calling_class is entirely broken now. see: http://pastebin.com/CfbW5Kcu and #16730 and PR1214 (which only fixes backend_puppet i think). anyone has some unofficial patches? because i''m just stuck in migration :( please don''t advise me to use data bindings as there is no way to use them in

in-module data with hiera
hello, Till now hiera-puppet was the only way I know that allowed hiera data to be loaded from inside a module. The problem with this was that it was still subject to the site specific hierarchy which means a module author had a pretty hard time to store his data in a proper way in his module thus perpetuating the use of the params classes pattern. Now that Puppet 3 is out and it''s gem

hiera default values for a variable
Hi everyone, I currently have a giant file with default variables I use in a lot of my modules and I override those at the node level if I need to. I thought I would give porting that data into a hiera setup. I worked out how to specify my data sources and started to make a go at moving some of my variables in the default data file. I thought heira would be smart and set a variable to undef if

Creating classes for individual nodes
This is more of a style question than implementation. I have a bunch of nodes running the same software but in many cases they need config files that are customized for that specific node. I was thinking I could push all the main files from the app through a central class and have separate classes for each individual node that has the config files. Is this the best way to do this or does it

Profiles, Hiera, and create_resources('class','...')
Hi all, We''ve recently started exploring the role / profile / component module described by Craig Dunn in his blog here: http://www.craigdunn.org/2012/05/239/ and discussed on the list the other day. As I was implementing this for a profile using the apache module, I realized that I could make another refinement to our approach by using

Rspec with rspec-hiera-puppet
I''ve been working on getting spec tests on all of my modules and am down to ones that use hiera and don''t have any reasonable defaults. It looks like there is a project on GH (https://github.com/amfranz/rspec-hiera-puppet) that is designed to fill this need, but for the life of me I cannot make it work. Plugins and Hiera
Dear all, This is a continuation of another thread, but I think the question diverged enough to create a new one. I have a hiera hierarchy like this: :hierarchy: - %{fqdn} - %{secundary_group} - %{primary_group} - %{productname} - all And I need to define the secondary/primary groups as facts, on the nodes. Gary has suggested me to use plugins, that they will provide the facts before

hiera command line performance
Hi everyone, The hiera command line program (version 0.3.0) is currently taking around 2 seconds per invocation. This seems quite slow to me, but is probably not an issue for most users. We have a number of legacy machines that for one reason or another have not been puppetised yet, and probably won''t be anytime soon, so I have a somewhat clever script that, for each of these

How do I check whether an imported resource has already been defined?
Hello Puppeteers, please consider the following scenario: Puppet is supposed to set up similar (but not necessarily identical) groups of hosts for a range of customers. For each customer a dedicated filesystem tree needs to be established on host A. This should not be difficult using exported File resources, however: How do I make sure that only the exported File resource of the first created
