Where do you store sensitive files with puppet+git approach?
Hi People, I have a quick question, which hopefully you will have an answer to. I am slowly moving towards puppet and git with multiple branches for different environments. Things are going pretty well, but now I have a small issue. The question is where should I store sensitive files, for instance SSL private keys or some files which contain sensitive data? I am aware of hiera-gpg storage

Exclude or disable a class in Hiera (yaml backend)
Hi People, Let''s imagine a scenario where I have multiple nodes, a very simple hierarchy: - nodes/%{fqdn} - roles/%{role} - common So what I am trying to achieve is for instance a class ''foo'' is always included in ''common.yaml'' and all the nodes will have that class included by default, but I want a specific node to have that class excluded or

early clean exit from module?
Hi folks, I''ve poked around the language reference, and havent found anything on this so far. I''d like to be able to force a clean early exit from a module. WITHOUT encasing the whole body of the module in an if statement. What I''m looking for: class somemodule { #no this isnt going to be a global variable I''m just using that as an example, if

using hiera for node classification
Hi All, I''ve been trying to use Hiera for node classification, my sit.pp is simple: node default { hiera_include("classes") } which has been working well with simple class definitions like: user@host$ cat testagent.yaml 2012-06-18 14:55:48 jon pts/13 --- classes: - motd Is anyone doing this in production? I''ve seen a little about this on line but it

modifying declared user/group types without resorting to inheritance?
Hello, I have number of classes that deal with user management and I''ve run into a snag with needing to extend/modify either the user or group types. I''m using theforeman as an ENC. The class structure I have is something like the following. users::common users::dev users::prod etc... users::{dev, prod} do not use inheritance. Almost all node include users::common.

Converting to heira format issue
Hi I''m just getting into hiera and have now configured it, my attempts at migrating to hiera have been frustratingly hard as I''m not able to get the write syntax. Can someone help me in converting the below from a class declaration to hiera? Current declarations in my declare.pp file: class profile::web { class { ''nsswitch'': automount =>

AWS OpsWorks announcement using Chef
I wonder if PuppetLabs will work with Amazon to try to add Puppet as an option to OpsWorks as well ? I don''t think people using Puppet with AWS in a stable fashion would try to move to OpsWorks and migrate everything to Chef, but new customers/startups would think twice in choosing Puppet if the service offered in AWS OpsWorks is based on Chef. I haven''t tried OpsWorks yet,

hiera-gpg and 400 error
Hello I am setting up servers with a puppetmaster and various nodes, all running Debian Wheezy with the Puppet 3 packages from Puppetlabs. The Puppetmaster is configured with Passenger and Apache. I am trying to use hiera-gpg to encrypt passwords, I have it installed and have created a key as described here: http://www.craigdunn.org/2011/10/secret-variables-in-puppet-with-hiera-and-gpg/ On

Hiera and environments
Hey there, I''m new to hiera and I'' m looking to configure it to use multiple environments. I''m able to query hiera keys from using the hiera CLI, however my clients seem to be having problems identifying the look up variables. *On the puppet master, CLI query* [root@puppet-dev puppet]# hiera -a sshpackages environment=development ["openssh",

in-module data with hiera
hello, Till now hiera-puppet was the only way I know that allowed hiera data to be loaded from inside a module. The problem with this was that it was still subject to the site specific hierarchy which means a module author had a pretty hard time to store his data in a proper way in his module thus perpetuating the use of the params classes pattern. Now that Puppet 3 is out and it''s gem

Share Hiera configuration between 2 nodes?
Hi, I am trying to use Hiera in puppet 3 and I have two nodes that both need the same configuration. In this case they are two web servers which have the same apache configuration. Rather than creating two seperate hiera files for node1.yaml and node2.yaml is there a way to group these by role (e.g. webserver.yaml)? I want to avoid duplicating the configuration if possible and keep the data

Puppet 3.1.1, hiera and parameter autoload
Hello all, I don''t know if I have hit a strange bug or it''s just an incorrect interpretation about how parameter autoloading works... Today I have been searching, analysing and about to hit my head against a wall trying to figure out why a call to hiera_hash was not merging data from top level among different hierarchies. The problem was that I was trying to do something

Puppet ignores hiera completely
I''m not sure at all what''s going on here, but I''ve spent a lot of time reading over the puppet hiera docs and setting everything up, but when I run puppet agent it just seems to ignore the hiera setup completely. Both the puppet master and agent nodes have exactly the same versions of puppet and hiera (installed via the official puppet APT repository). I''ve
