Poll for thoughts on hierifying modules and OS default differences
Hello lovelies, Our team is deliberating a few different options for the hierification of our modules; and wanted to poll the collective genius before making our decision. As we all know, there are certain attributes of a package which are, by default, consistent on an OS... say, the name of a package..... class foobar { include foobar::params $package = $foobar::params::package Package

Unable to specify hierarchy for data-in-modules
Hello, I''m running Puppet agent stand-alone on Windows. I got data-in-modules working. However, no matter what I put into the module hiera.yaml, I can only override the defaults from common.yaml by osfamily (and not, e.g., by environment). In the setup below the following command outputs: >puppet apply --binder -e "notice lookup (''my_key'')"

Share Hiera configuration between 2 nodes?
Hi, I am trying to use Hiera in puppet 3 and I have two nodes that both need the same configuration. In this case they are two web servers which have the same apache configuration. Rather than creating two seperate hiera files for node1.yaml and node2.yaml is there a way to group these by role (e.g. webserver.yaml)? I want to avoid duplicating the configuration if possible and keep the data

Testing Hiera Lookup with Puppet Master
Hello, Is there an easy way to test hiera lookup for a node? A node is not getting the value I expect from Hiera and I want a way to test this. I noticed that `hiera` has an option called `-i` to use the Puppet inventory service. With the latest (RC4 I believe) of Hiera I''m getting the following when I try to use that though: Puppet inventory service lookup failed: NoMethodError:

early clean exit from module?
Hi folks, I''ve poked around the language reference, and havent found anything on this so far. I''d like to be able to force a clean early exit from a module. WITHOUT encasing the whole body of the module in an if statement. What I''m looking for: class somemodule { #no this isnt going to be a global variable I''m just using that as an example, if

hiera command line performance
Hi everyone, The hiera command line program (version 0.3.0) is currently taking around 2 seconds per invocation. This seems quite slow to me, but is probably not an issue for most users. We have a number of legacy machines that for one reason or another have not been puppetised yet, and probably won''t be anytime soon, so I have a somewhat clever script that, for each of these

hiera_array, structured data and multiple levels of hierarchy
Hi all! I''m trying to setup a puppet module for sudo that will write multiple files with separate data for each file, all dependent on the hiera hierarchy. Here''s the relevant portion of my hiera.yaml: > :hierarchy: > > - "datacenter/app/role/node/%{::clientcert}" > > - "datacenter/app/role/%{::server_role}" > > -

Hiera and environments
Hey there, I''m new to hiera and I'' m looking to configure it to use multiple environments. I''m able to query hiera keys from using the hiera CLI, however my clients seem to be having problems identifying the look up variables. *On the puppet master, CLI query* [root@puppet-dev puppet]# hiera -a sshpackages environment=development ["openssh",

Puppet 2.7, hiera 1.0 and hiera as an ENC
This is the situation I have: All my hosts are the* same OS.* All my host are in the* same puppet environment,* so I cannot use %{environment} I have a module that sets all the *basic* functionality for the OS, resolution, authentication, security, packages, etc I have a module for each application hosted. hiera default values for a variable
Hi everyone, I currently have a giant file with default variables I use in a lot of my modules and I override those at the node level if I need to. I thought I would give porting that data into a hiera setup. I worked out how to specify my data sources and started to make a go at moving some of my variables in the default data file. I thought heira would be smart and set a variable to undef if

Simple hiera-puppet usage
Hi all, I am trying to understand how does hiera puppet backend work, so I created the following example: hiera.yaml has only: --- :backends: - puppet --- And the node: node ''testnode'' { $variable = ''kk'' $thing = hiera ("variable") notify { "note: $thing": } } I don''t want to use the yaml backend for now, just want to

hiera_hash lookups for included classes?
When using "include" to include a class Hiera helpfully performs an autolookup on the parameters of the included class. Specially-named variable names are automatically pulled from the Hiera datastore(s) and passed into the included module. This is pretty awesome. But it looks like included resources _only_ perform a hiera() lookup. If we have a hash defined in several levels of our

hiera values issue
Hi, I have a puppetmaster - agent architecture. I have a module for the vsftpd configuracion in the agents. The configuration of the value ''max_per_ip'' in the agents may vary. This is a line of the manifest: $max_per_ip = hiera(''max_per_ip'',10) I want to specify different values for each agent using hiera. The problem is I am only able to specify the

Puppet ignores hiera completely
I''m not sure at all what''s going on here, but I''ve spent a lot of time reading over the puppet hiera docs and setting everything up, but when I run puppet agent it just seems to ignore the hiera setup completely. Both the puppet master and agent nodes have exactly the same versions of puppet and hiera (installed via the official puppet APT repository). I''ve

[hiera] Hierarchy modification takes long time to be effective
Hello, I''ve something strange : When I modify my hierarchy in my hiera.yaml, it can take up to several hours, for the modification to work. eg : I create a subdir in my hieradata, move all the concerned files into, modify my hiera.yaml > from : > :hierarchy: > - %{operatingsystem} > to : > :hierarchy: > - *os/*%{operatingsystem} > but the changes

Lookup another node's hiera data - fqdn hierarchy
I''ve begun using Hiera in combination with Foreman, primarily storing data that is best left in Array/Hash form. I''d like to be able to have a module, in this case BackupPC, query all the Hiera data for each node where the backup directories/databases are stored. Then use all that information on the BackupPC server to generate proper configuration files for each
