Class declaration ordering causes duplicate resource error
Has anyone run into this issue before?
http://projects.puppetlabs.com/issues/5046#note-17
Is there something obvious that I''m missing?

fully qualified variables and nodes.pp
hi folks,
As a response to " Dynamic lookup of $var at is deprecated. Support will
be removed in Puppet 2.8. Use a fully-qualified variable name (e.g.,
$classname::variable) or parameterized classes." warning
i''m trying to apply fully-qualified variable name solution following this
Doc http://docs.puppetlabs.com/guides/scope_and_puppet.html, but i have a

advice on module organization
Hi Folks,
Like to get some advice on module organization. I have a system that has a
few different components. One or more components can be installed on a
host. The hosts also have a "type" dimension. This "type" dimension could
(should) ideally be used to configure the system (fill in a bunch of
variables). Problem is, I''m not sure how the best way to do

Passing class parameters to hiera
I am using puppet 2.6.11 and want to pass parameter for implementing
sudo for mulitple users. So here is my simple code, which I would like
to pass to hiera to specify user name lookup. Appreciate any help,
thanks in advance.
class sudo( $name) {
#Class:: sudo

package { "sudo": ensure => present, }
file { "/etc/sudoers":
owner => root,

Puppet components and configuration / Hiera patterns
We have embraced Hiera; we use the YAML configuration system currently and
on the whole everyone finds it easy to use and intuitive.
However, as our manifests have grown more complex, we have a need to
"compile" multiple narrowly-focused classes together into different types
of high-level roles. For example, we might have a "webmail" class that
pulls together classes for

enabling a yum repository
I have a class that pulls in some yum repositories. One of the yum
repositories is disabled, but on one host I''d like to enable it.
i.e. I''d like to do something like this:
class { ''myyumrepos'': }
yumrepo { ''EPEL'': enabled => 1, }
What''s the best way to do this?
I am using an ENC.

How do design next-gen modules, any guidelines ? a question for gurus...
Hi,
My dilemma is how should I write my module to be "next-gen" ?
Not from a code point of view but from a design/layout point of view.
We wrote our modules for 2.6.x like every beginner would have done:
write everything in init.pp.
But now, the fashion is to use parameterized classes and Hiera which we
will use with puppet 2.7.x.
I mainly followed/watched what Example42 was doing.

Moving from Puppet 0.25 to Puppet 2.6+ : global scope/variables
Hi,
I worked with puppet (< 0.25) back in 2008/2009. We were able to
deploy 200 servers from scratch and manage them. It worked fine.
I''m now with a new customer and I''m pushing Puppet (and I''m also back
to puppet on a side project).
We''re considering Puppet 2.6 to manage RHEL/CentOS 5 or 6 hosts. I''m
"upgrading myself" to Puppet

Class parameter flexibility with ENC, hiera or both
Dear puppetteers,
I am having a philosophical question about parametrized classes.
When building modules, one wants to be as flexible as possible, to try
to target as many puppet flavors as possible. This is our target:
- Foreman users, using foreman as an ENC with smart variables (or
potentially any other ENC, but I would say this is the most widespread one).
- Pure Puppet''s site.pp

using hiera for node classification
Hi All,
I''ve been trying to use Hiera for node classification, my sit.pp is simple:
node default {
hiera_include("classes")
}
which has been working well with simple class definitions like:
user@host$ cat testagent.yaml 2012-06-18 14:55:48 jon pts/13
---
classes:
- motd
Is anyone doing this in production? I''ve seen a little about this on line
but it

Overriding class options with hiera
Hi,
I''m trying to do something with Hiera, whereby the ''default'' configuration
for a class is within it''s role/profile manifest, which can then be
overridden on a node specific basis by hiera.
As an example;
class profile::base {
class { ''::ntp'':
servers => [''a'', ''b'', ''c'',

Question about reusing classes/modules
Hello Everyone,
I''m still pretty new with puppet so please bare with me. I tried
searching and I''m pretty sure I''ve ready my answer but I''m not sure if
I''m going down the right path just yet.
My scenario is this: I have 4 environments, Dev, Test, QA, Prod. Each
of these environments lives in 2 sites, LA and NY. I have 5
applications that are site and

Whats the best approach to create a repo of the installers to be used for installing and upgrading in the puppet managed nodes
Lets take the example, I am having a jboss-4.2.3 installers as a .tar file.
In general to install jboss, i ll
1. untar the jboss-4.2.3 into a prefefined folder (opt/server/jbossas/)
into multiple servers
2. untar the openjdk into a preferined path (/opt/software/java)set the
path in the bash.profile
3. Create server profile in the place where jboss is installed
4. Start the server.
Lets say

Puppet & Oracle Database config management
Afternoon all.
I''ve been reading around on Puppet and Oracle, and have come up with a few
links that suggest how to get Oracle installed and base configured, which
has got me started in the right direction on that.
My next challenge is maintaining Oracle database specific configuration on
the relevant hosts. This contains various elements, such as /etc/oratab,
/etc/oranfstab (as

Two parameterized classes calling both a thirth class (results in already defined)
Hi all,
I have three parameterized classes, named mq, mq_gsk and apache.
The mq class always calls the mq_gsk class, but the apache class
should only call the mq_gsk class when the mq class is not used in a
hosts'' node definition
Here is my configuration
class mq (
$gsk_version = undef ) {
require mq::params
< ..... >
class { ''mq_gsk'':

Profiles, Hiera, and create_resources('class','...')
Hi all,
We''ve recently started exploring the role / profile / component module
described by Craig Dunn in his blog here:
http://www.craigdunn.org/2012/05/239/ and discussed on the list the other
day. As I was implementing this for
a profile using the apache module, I realized that I could make another
refinement to our approach by using

Adding files to file server on Puppet Master from a client
HI.
Firstly, I''m bound to be doing something utterly basically wrong here, so
if I am I apologise.
Right now I have a fairly simple setup where the JAR files for a
Weblogic-based application server are stored in the file server on my
Puppet Master. I run scripts on the client that downloads the files from
the file server, puts them in the right place etc etc. All very simple. I

Sharing data between nodes with hiera
I have this, I think common, situation:
- NodeDB VM with MySQL
- NodeApp VM with an application that uses the MySQL DB
Obivuously both needs to have information on the DB (like user, DB name,
etc.)
Since DB will be created in the NodeDB by the MySQL module from puppetlabs
and the app will just connect to the DB and do its work, but need to set
the configuration parameters.
Now ...
since App

Boolean in hiera... problems again
Hi...
I''ve been trying to set up boolean values in Hiera, but with no luck.
For example, I''m using puppetlabs-haproxy module, and this is a code
snippet:
class haproxy (
$manage_service = true,
...
) inherits haproxy::params {
...
if $manage_service {
}
}
Now, this is how I set up values in hiera:
haproxy::manage_service: false
But, it seems that

puppetd hanging on some nodes
Hi All,
In my set-up, I''ve got a cron job that triggers a Puppet run every 20
minutes. I''ve found that on approximately 13 nodes (out of 166),
puppetd just hangs. I have to go in, kill the process, remove
/var/lib/puppet/state/puppetdlock, and run puppet again and then it''s
fine.
After a while, it just hangs again so I have to go in, kill the process, etc.
Any ideas?
