Question about plans for the forge.
Currently and going forward people will be running multiple versions of puppet. What are the plans for puppet compatibility with Modules? Thinking we may want to be able to specify what version of Puppet is running and ask for the compatible module. (Which may be the same). Is Puppet similar to Capistrano?
I discovered Capistrano while I was trying to figure out what I wanted. See attached notes. http://www.genunix.org/wiki/index.php/GNOSIS/Kraken Puppet seems promising. Thanks, Brian -- - Brian Gupta http://opensolaris.org/os/project/nycosug/

Official puppetlabs position on cron vs puppet as a service?
Over the years many shops have come to start running puppet via cron to address memory leaks in earlier versions of Ruby, but the official position was that puppet was meant to be run as a continually running service. I am wondering if the official position has changed. On one hand many if not all of the early Ruby issues have been fixed, on the other, the addition of mcollective into the mix as

Trying to understand how mcollective differs from saltstack?
http://saltstack.org/ http://puppetlabs.com/mcollective/ I found this link that talks about Func, Rundeck, Salt and mcollective, but it doesn''t really compare and contrast. http://www.coloandcloud.com/editorial/func-mcollective-salt-and-rundeck/(From a 10,000 overview Saltstack and mcollective look very similar. puppetd 0.25.4 with puppetmaster 0.24.8?
Our puppetmaster runs 0.24.8 on Ubuntu 9.10. Our clients are either Ubuntu 9.10 or Ubuntu 8.04. We''ve just brought up our first Ubuntu 10.04 machine. This machine installs puppetd 0.25.4. The Ubuntu 10.04 machine can''t seem to present it''s certificate request properly. In my masterhttp.log, I see [2010-10-20 13:09:06] 174-143-141-55.static.cloud-ips.com - -

trouble w/ Foreman as ENC, agents and environments
Hi, I have a Puppet Enterprise (2.0) puppetmaster running with Foreman, and having trouble getting it working as an External Node Classifier. In short, if I manually add a test client into site.pp, it will retrieve the proper catalog / classes, but I would like to avoid having to do that. I''m also using environments (production/testing/ development) as well, but think I have most of

Puppetmaster with stored configs leaks file descriptors on CentOS 5
Hi folks, When I enabled stored configs on my puppet master, it began keeping lots of open connections to the MySQL server (as far as I understand it opened one connection for each client run and never closed them). I set up the server to close idle connections after 5 minutes. Now the database server does close the connections but the puppet master keeps them in CLOSE_WAIT state and eventually

Software inventory
Howdy, Before I go about writing one myself, anyone out there written a software inventory module/fact for gathering a list of all installed rpms/debs on a system? Got a few ideas floating around in my head, but wanted to see if/what other folks have done .. -- I''ve seen things you people wouldn''t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. Upgrading 0.25.4
All, Can someone give me some ideas as to, or point me to where I can find documentation on the issues I may have upgrading puppet from 0.25.4 to the latest? Also, the server is using passenger, and I know there''s a whole lot of magic voodoo that has to happen to make sure that the version numbers of all the bits are compatible. undefined class results in error instead of warning in 2.7.3
My ENC has always added some extra classes not defined in puppet (things that I might end up using later based on the host name, department, or other attributes associated with the host in my database). In 0.25.5 the undefined class was reported at (info), in 2.6.9 it was reported as (warning), but in 2.7.3 it''s an (err) ? This now causes my catalog to stop processing. Why the change

AWS Elastic Beanstalk & Puppet
Anyone have experience and willing to share for Beanstalk? e.g. How does Puppet fit in when we mainly use AWS Elastic Beanstalk? Upgrading my version of perl
Hi guys, I totally love Puppet. I"m installing an ubuntu virtual machine with it and have managed to get the most rudimentary stuff working. My virtual machine runs 5.10 and I am needing 5.12. Does anyone know how to specify an install of Perl-5.12 in my .pp file? Any pointers would be appreciated... Julian -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups

UserEngine testing
Hi Everybody, I''m playing around with the engines created by James Adam and I bumped into the following. I would like the rake bootstrap command to use the testing database and I just know there''s an easy way to do so. I could have just copied the dev db''s to the test db''s but I think I''m missing something fundamental here. Hints are very welcome.

Moving from Puppet 0.25 to Puppet 2.6+ : global scope/variables
Hi, I worked with puppet (< 0.25) back in 2008/2009. We were able to deploy 200 servers from scratch and manage them. It worked fine. I''m now with a new customer and I''m pushing Puppet (and I''m also back to puppet on a side project). We''re considering Puppet 2.6 to manage RHEL/CentOS 5 or 6 hosts. I''m "upgrading myself" to Puppet
