template does not print variables
Hello list,
I am having a problem with template file. Why are variables not interpolated?
[root@puppet manifests]# cat /etc/motd

domain = <%= domain %>
operating system = <%= operatingsystem %>
This is the template file
[root@puppet manifests]# cat ../templates/motd.erb

Recursive file hieararchy with order precedence
Hello,
Consider the following;
You have a number of sites, all controlled by puppet. You have
identified which files that are common to every host, and then which
files are common to any particular site. Finally, you have the files
which are private to the node in question.
What I was wondering was if it would be possible to have some sort of
directory hierarchy which has some kind of

ERB template, both client and master data
Hi all,
I''m trying to build a motd template for all my linux machines.
This should contain two type of variables:
- client side (from facter), like operatingsystem and architecture
- supplied by the master, after parsing a text file (or querying a
mysql db), like description and location.
So. Where are the template variables evaluated? On the client or on the master?
Any hints on how I

trouble with retrieving information from current source
I''m rather new to puppet and I''ve been trying to get a module to work
on the client servers. Right now I''m trying to get
http://forge.puppetlabs.com/ghoneycutt/pam to run. When I try to run
it I get these two errors:
err: //pam/File[/etc/pam.d/sshd]: Failed to retrieve current state of

Puppet hangs
Hello,
we have one puppet server managing approx servers, all FreeBSD.
The problem is that the puppet clients all hangs, one by one,
eventually. They will run for anything between an hour up to a week.
But eventually the all hang.
We really like puppet and want to keep using it. But the way it is now
is completely unusable. We''ve tried many versions, from 24.x, and now
2.6.1rc1. But

puppet clients
I''ve gone over the documentation several times now and I can''t figure out how to ''apply'' a manifest to a client.
The client does have a signed certificate but the only thing in the /etc/puppet folder on the client is an ssl directory.
I have a manifest that works fine on the puppet ''master''
I have added the client into

Using multiple values for source, for platform/arch/host configs
Hi, in an attempt to simplify my configuration, and from a suggestion
on IRC, I was thinking of using multiple values for file { source =>
[] }. Was just currious if anyone had any comments on this.
Basically, I setup my file-server to use:
<snip>
[private]
path /var/lib/puppet/files/private/%H
allow *
[shared]
path /var/lib/puppet/files/shared
allow *

Error 400 : could not find template
Hello,
I did make a stupid fault: not commiting changes to version control :-(
After the installation of puppet-dashboard, I added a recipe to add
report = true to puppet config files on clients.
Now all Puppet clients don''t update because of an error...
What can be the various reasons for an ''400'' error??
I guess it has something to do with rights.

How to override $::operatingsystem fact
Hi,
I want to introduce "Proxmox" as new value in $::operatingsystem.
"Proxmox" is based on Debian, so the normal value is currently "Debian".
To change that, I just write a custom fact based on the facter fact
"operatingsystem"
Facter.add(:operatingsystem) do
> ...
> setcode do
> ...

$operatingsystem variable.
In the documentation, there is an example such as this:
case $operatingsystem {
sunos: { include solaris } # apply the solaris class
redhat: { include redhat } # apply the redhat class
default: { include generic } # apply the generic class
}
I''ve seen the $operatingsystem variable used elsewhere.
What actually puts the value into the $operatingsystem variable?

Appending a file to an existing file
Hi,
I have a template file which I would like to append to an existing
file (in this case I wish to add a few lines to /etc/motd). Unless
I''ve missed it, it does not appear that file has an append option. Is
there an easy way copy to the end of a file
Thanks
Paul

suppressing motd without decreasing verbosity
Is there a way to make the rsync client suppress the motd without
suppressing other messages when connecting to an rsync server? What I
want is to run rsync from cron and have it produce output only when
any files have been downloaded or deleted and whenever errors have
happened. Otherwise, I want it to be quiet. This doesn't seem to be
possible with rsync as of version 2.5.7.

Puppetdashboard 1.1.0 spec file
Hello,
Does anyone have a good spec file for puppet dashboard 1.1.0, as the
one supplied in the sourcecode is for 1.0.4
and tries to copy some directories, that don''t exist anymore.
I did some remodelling in the file, so it creates a rpm now, but I''m
not sure whether my "fix" is the only change needed.

[Code study]should we remove if (motd && *motd) section?
Dear List,
I'm confused when we will run into "if (motd && *motd)"?
As I have found that Globals is set 0 during initialization, and I
didn't find anywhere else assign the value.
If so, should we remove this section?
Or there might be some where I missed? Please correct me, if I'm wrong.
Thanks in advance.

Relationships between models.
Hi All,
I think Im having a mental block here. For some reason I just cant get
my head round relationships.
What I have is the following.
4 tables
1) Hosts
2) Software
3) OperatingSystem
4) Company
In my terms (which are most likely wrong) a company can have lots of
hosts, a host has lots of software, a host has one operating system.
So should my models have the following relations in them?

Developing custom type/providers for multiple OS
Hello all,
I am developing a few custom providers for some features that I need into
my system (such as dealing with different zipped files or generating some
JSON data based on OS files) and I have hit into a question about "how to
do this for multiple OS?"
Lets focus into the zipped file provider that should provide a common
method to pack or unpack zipped files (tar, tar.gz,
