...and another one. Of course, if you subscribed to the redhat-watch list then I wouldn't have to forward these (hint, hint). ;) Cheers, Dan ___________________________________________________________________________ Dan Yocum | Phone: (630) 840-8525 Linux/Unix System Administrator | Fax: (630) 840-6345 Computing Division OSS/FSS | email: yocum@fnal.gov

yum remove <old kernel pkgs> -- wants to remove a ton of stuff
I've got a Centos 4 box at work, where I noticed a pile of old kernels lying around and no longer needed. I did "rpm -qa | grep -y kernel > list" then edited the list to remove from it the newer kernels, then "yum remove `cat list`". Yum has come up with a list of 71 packages it wants to remove, even though there were only 33 kernel-related RPMs in the list. this

And now onto the palm pilot with Kpilot
I've looked up the Kpilot manual, and I think I have an okay idea of what's going on with it. I'm trying to get it's detection feature to find my Palm Pilot. CentOS does seem to be able to recognize it, because if I run lsusb when running a hot sync, I get the following: [root at localhost dev]# lsusb Bus 001 Device 010: ID 0830:0060 Palm, Inc. Palm Tungsten T / Zire 71

A few general questions
Hi All; I ran Linux as my main laptop OS for several years, then I got into a mac shop and bought a macbook. The macbook is ok but it just doesn't cut it per productivity so I've ordered another laptop (a 64bit laptop with 8G of memory expandable to 16G and 2 internal 320G 7200rpm drives) I'll be loading Linux as soon as the machine arrives from Dell. Here's my questions:

[fdo] Request to host project "OpenSync" a synchronization framework
Hi i am Armin Bauer, one of the developers of Multisync, an application to sync various pdas, cellulars and other programs (see www.multisync.org for further information) We recently ran into design limitations with our current version, which was where we decided to develop a new major version of Multisync. I started working on the new design but quickly noticed to there are a lot of other

feature request for non-sweave vignettes
Currently Makefiles for vignettes are only supported for .tex files. Could the tools package be modified to allow file extensions to be specified for a vignette engine? Having the pandoc pdf conversion in a Makefile rather than through R would be tidier in some cases. If I specify my vignette engine as ``` tools::vignetteEngine( 'myengine', pattern = '\\.[Rr](md|nw)$',

FWIW...
Good morning, everyone... Perhaps this will either help or encourage others interested in using CentOS as a networked workstation. It is based upon my experiences, and all other disclaimers apply. 1. I did a basic workstation install from 4.1 CD's deploying KDE and Gnome desktops and, other than a few minor issues, mostly of my making, everything went smoothly. The install process is

Apparent SNMP remote-root vulnerability.
I just had a remote root break-in on my machine (x86 running Red Hat Linux 5.0 with all the updates except for kernel-2.0.32-3) this morning at 06:03:28 EDT. From what I''ve been able to gather, it appears to have been through snmpd, which I missed when I was weeding out unused daemons. Sorry for the feeble message, but all I know (or at least strongly suspect) is that there''s a

Forw: RedHat sysklogd vulnerability
Another from Bugtraq. I've also forwarded this one on to our contact at Red Hat (Stephen Smoogen) and he tells me it's in their QA currently.
