IMAP security across the net.
Hi, We are wondering if anyone knows the security features of IMAP. I know (at least I think I know;) that plain POPMAIL uses no encryption on the password, and that APOP provides some encryption. Ideally we would like a secure system that is accessible from any laptop anywhere on the net. Thanks, Blair. Computer Engineering Inc. http://www.compeng.net Phone: 780 499 5687 (9 - 5 MST) Fax:

Oddities with Debian unstable dovecot
Hello, I'm running an Debian etch box with unstable and ever since the last upgrade to dovecot, I've seen odd things. At times, I would see emails would go missing from the Inbox or other folders, and I couldn't move emails that were moved from the Inbox to another folder back into the Inbox. These have seen gone away since I removed all dovecot.* files and .index* files from my

Why do plugins use class_eval?
I''m writing my own plugin and all the plugins I''ve seen use class_eval in the method that is called in the including module. For example: http://wiki.rubyonrails.com/rails/pages/HowToWriteAnActsAsFoxPlugin module Foo module Acts #:nodoc: module Fox #:nodoc: def self.included(base) base.extend(ClassMethods) end # declare the class level

Limiting the columns loaded from a legacy db
I''m setting up a new Rails project that is a nice front end for a company''s personnel database with a legacy schema. Unfortunately, the table that contains all the standard information (first name, last name, email address) has some 20+ columns, one of which is a BLOB of a picture of the person. Loading all this takes a while, when the application really only needs the

imap locking spool?
How does IMAP lock the /var/spool/mail/user file? Here's my problem: I'm writing a script to expire old or oversize mail through a series of archive folders. I don't want to take the whole server down to do this, nor does it seem like I would have to lock the user out entirely if I can manage to emulate the locks correctly. I am able to lock /var/spool/mail/user (and ~user/mail/*)

samba-3.0.14a: server doesn't show in browse lists
I'm using samba-3.0.14a as our samba server for 12 windows machines. Works OK, except that it doesn't show itself on the browse list. That is, on any of the windows machines the browse list shows all the machines _except_ the server itself. Yet net view \\server ( on one of the windows machines ) shows the shares on the server. /var/log/messages shows the linux box winning the server

synchronizing Samba & Unix passwords
The following message is a courtesy copy of an article that has been posted to comp.protocols.smb as well. Okay. Maybe someone knows the answer to a question I have about password synchronization. The smb.conf man page says that the "passd chat" string controls the chat between smbd and the local password changing program. The man page goes on to say that the string can contain

unit testing for R packages?
Hi All, I'm interested in putting some unit tests into an R package I'm building. I have seen assorted things such as Runit library, svUnit library, packages with 'tests' directories, etc I grep'd "unit test" through the writing R extensions manual but didn't find anything. Are there any suggestions out there? Currently I have several (a lot?) classes/methods

rsync client and server processes, all hanging in read_timeout()
I'm backing my Ubuntu server up to an HFS+ case-sensitive volume on our iMac using the below rsync command and it hangs at the end. Compiling rsync 3.0.8 by hand with CFLAGS=-g on both systems shows that all rsync processes are in read_timeout(). $ rsync \ --delete-delay \ -P \ -v \ -A \ -X \ --fake-super \ -aH \ --numeric-ids \ --exclude '/dev' \

Rails Core Weekly May 23 - May 28 [ http://wrath.rubyonrails.org/pipermail/rails-core/2006-May/001500.html ] On may 23 I just missed an opportunity to report on a patch (http://dev.rubyonrails.org/ticket/5167) politely submitted by Francois Beausoleil that adds a generator for observers. Marcel Molina Jr. hates repeating himself so a generator for observers is most welcome. The patch is applied
