[solution] chkrootkit reports infected files
Hey all,
I've submitted a fix for chkrootkit port, to solve the
false positives on FreeBSD 5 and higher:
http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=55919
The topic, btw, should be "Teach security/chkrootkit
about FreeBSD 5", but it's not my first typo today.
Maintainer, please approve.
Authors, please see if you can include the changes.
I also fixed a minor bug in chk_vdir.

OpenSSL tools are not installed
Hi,
I just had some issues with unvalidated certificates after the update of
the mail/fetchmail port.
The solution was to add the missing certificates manually, but that
involved running the c_rehash script, that currently isn't installed.
Of course, I could run it directly from src/crypto/openssl/tools/, but
that isn't an option for users that don't have the source installed.
So,

Integrated RTL8168/8111 NIC not assigned interface
I'm running 7.0-RELEASE-i386 on Jetway's NC92-N230 mainboard. The board has
one integrated RTL8168/8111 gigabit NIC as well as an expansion board with
three RTL8168/8111 NICs. Why would the three NICs work while the onboard NIC
does not?

Secunia / Firefox Javascript "Arbitrary Memory Exposure" test
I just confirmed the following bug on my firefox.
http://secunia.com/advisories/14820/
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; FreeBSD i386; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20050219 Firefox/1.0
(I think my firefox is a month or two behind, from ports, but the
advisary indicates both 1.0.1 and 1.0.2 are effected.)

chroot-ing users coming in via SSH and/or SFTP?
A client wants me to set up a mechanism whereby his customers can drop files
securely into directories on his FreeBSD server; he also wants them to be
able to retrieve files if needed. The server is already running OpenSSH,
and he himself is using Windows clients (TeraTerm and WinSCP) to access it,
so the logical thing to do seems to be to have his clients send and receive
files via SFTP or SCP.

Appeal for active bug reports relating to TCP, UDP, routing locking in 7-STABLE
Dear all:
With 7.2 approaching, I wanted to review the set of known network bug reports
(especially panics, hangs, lock order reversals) relating to TCP, UDP,
sockets, and routing in 7-STABLE.
If you are aware of problems along these that you can confirm definitely occur
with 7-STABLE checked out no earlier than 17 March, 2009, please drop me a
private e-mail with a pointer to the thread,

Kerberos in the handbook
Is anyone currently working on updating the Kerberos documentation in
the Handbook? if so, I'd like to help. If not, I'm hoping to find
someone who can get me up to speed on the FreeBSD docbook extensions :-)

[patch] libc Berkeley DB information leak
Hi,
FreeBSD libc Berkeley DB can leak sensitive information to database
files. The problem is that it writes uninitialized memory obtained from
malloc(3) to database files.
You can use this simple test program to reproduce the behavior:
http://www.saunalahti.fi/~jh3/dbtest.c
Run the program and see the resulting test.db file which will contain a
sequence of 0xa5 bytes directly from malloc(3).

ee using 99% cpu after user ssh session terminates abnormaly
Recently i have been using a dialup 56k account to access the net
and have noticed that when my ssh session times out and I am editing
a file in ` ee ' the system goes to 99% cpu usage and stays like
this till the pid is killed.
This is a standard user account (not root/su)
Would a user be able to create a denial of service condition
on the remote system using this bug?

Looking for tor users experiencing crashes
I've had an informal, third or fourth hand report of kernel instability when
running Tor under load on unidentified versions of FreeBSD. Obviously, this
is a bit vague as bug reports go, but I'm interested in seeing if anyone has
had real experience with this happening, and might be interested in helping to
track it down. If there are kernel crashes, I'm specifically looking for

gmirror and gstripe
hail,
I have an old AthlonXP 1700+ running 7-STABLE:
FreeBSD xxx 7.1-PRERELEASE FreeBSD 7.1-PRERELEASE #1: Thu Nov 13 23:54:59
BRT 2008 root@xxx:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/xxx i386
where I have two 750GB Seagate SATA Disks. They are divided as two slices,
around the first 120GB are gathered in gmirror, and what left is in
gstripe. so that's whats going on. if the machine locks, and fsck comes to

Listening outside ipfw / program interface to ipfw
Hi,
Two quick questions that I can't seem to find answers for using google.
1) is is possible to listen outside an ipfw firewall - that is have
ethereal record the packets before ipfw starts dropping them? If so how?
2) Is there an api to ipfw that will let me manipulate rules, query
stats etc? I need something faster than running the command line binary?
Thanks

What's our current policy on ports FORBIDDEN knob?
Greetings,
I'm a little curious about the way FORBIDDEN knob is used in ports system.
Traditionally, we use it to mark a port which have known security issue,
with the new vuxml mechanism, are we still doing the same thing when
necessary? Or, only the "critical" ones, for example, remote exploitable
buffer overruns, etc?
If the second assumption (only critical ones are marked

seeking current supported crypto co-processors
Howdy,
<this messages is cross posted in freebsd-security and freebsd-net>
I'm seeking current cryptographic coprocessors supported in FreeBSD 8.x. By perusing through the crypto-dev (and subsequently referenced) man page(s) I found this list:
Hifn 7751/7951/7811/7955/7956 crypto accelerator
SafeNet 1141/1741
Bluesteel 5501/5601

On what versions of FreeBSD can we unreserve ports?
On which versions of FreeBSD is it now possible to
un-reserve ports?
( I've been waiting for this since forever ... have
spent countless days - $$$ - trying to install
workarounds, only to junk them later. I've even
been paid a consulting gig to develop this, and
declined to deploy it on my own servers :-/ )
