PHP 5.3: IUS vs CentOS repos
I need to upgrade PHP because the latest WordPress requires one at least at
5.2.4. What are the tradeoffs of using the php53 packages provided by
CentOS versus IUS? I've seen that installing the RHEL-derived php53
requires removing php first and it creates package conflicts because it
doesn't provide a virtual php-common package. That suggests I should
install the IUS package. Is

Automating infrastructure tests on Puppet nodes after a puppetrun
Hi List,
I would like to discuss with whoever is interested one topic that I
suppose has general interest.
I want to implement some kind of automatic testing on the status of a
node after a Puppet Run.
These tests involve trivial and less trivial things things like:
- A local service is running
- A local port is open
- A remote server on a remote port is reachable by the node
- An URL replies

how to get bug fixed by TUV
hi all,
i have a general question (a bit surprised ti's not on the centos faq):
we found a bug in a package in a centos install, and we are wondering
what the best approach is to get TUV to fix it (and release an update),
so it gets fixed in centos rebuild and thus on our nodes. or at the very
least to get it on their todo list ;)
bugs.centos.org seems an obvious candidate to get them

how to get bug fixed by TUV
The Redhat guys are normally responding very well to bug reports from
Centos users. They don't seem to differentiate. Using bugs.centos.org seems
quite pointless. I normally just use https://bugzilla.redhat.com/.

Pro Puppet
This is actually a question for James, but I think it''s interesting
for many out there.
When the new book about Puppet is going to be released? Will it cover
2.6?
All the best

slow Perl on CentOS 5
If your Perl apps are unusually slow on CentOS 5, have a look at this blog:
http://blog.vipul.net/2008/08/24/redhat-perl-what-a-tragedy/
In a nutshell: some Perl apps are 100x slower on RedHat / CentOS 5
compared to other distributions.

CA_Server woes
I''m having difficulty getting my head around some CA issues
My client has:
[puppetd]
ca_server=puppetca.mydomain.com
and puppet resolves to a different machine.
when puppet connects, it requests a signature from
puppetca.mydomain.combut then on the next pass fails with the
following:
err: Could not retrieve catalog: Certificates were not trusted: SSL_connect
returned=1 errno=0

partial matching in data frame subscripting
I'm not sure if the following is a bug or a feature:

Rebuilding machines from foreman
Hello,
I ran into this problem today, I am trying to implement "One click
installation", I followed foreman howtos and set up the pre-requisites
accordingly.
However, when I click on "Build" button, I get the following errors in the
foreman''s console and another error in the web interface indicating that the
installation failed. Any ideas?

Environments and tiers
Does anyone have any suggestions about how to deal with multiple
environments/tiers?
For instance, we have several environments ( production, dev, qa,
etc.. ) and within each environment, different tiers ( web, data, app,
etc ). Each tier is a different IP network segment, so all the hosts
in each tier have different configurations for certain things like
resolv.conf, ntp.conf and so on.

puppetca unable to sign new certs - Invalid argument error
Hello
I have a puppetmasterd installation running on a Mac OS X 10.6.3

Earlier today it was happily signing requests, before I upgraded
puppet from 0.24.8 to 0.25.4. Now I get "Invalid argument":
bash-3.2# puppetca --sign bouti.carbonplanet.com

Variable Scoping = Root Canal
I''ve been struggling with puppet variable scope all day, well, for
several months actually.
I think I have pretty simple requirements. For any given node, I want
to be able to set a series of variables and include a set of classes,
based on three different aspects of a node, being physical location,
operating system, and function. If I try and do this with classes, I
find that variables
