Exception handling in custom facts
Hi. I''d like to use exception handling in my custom facts. For example, in plain Ruby: begin buildno = '''' bcrelease = open("/etc/BCrelease") while (line = bcrelease.gets) line = line.chomp buildno = $1 if line =~ /^Build:\s+(\d+)/ end bcrelease.close print "#{buildno}\n" rescue print "No

Workstations and Certs
I am trying to come up with a workable solution in managing numerous Mac workstations allowing a high degree of flexibility with regards to certs. My puppet environment is setup to application installation on machines that have been ''imaged'' with a base OS and the puppet and facter apps. So, when a Mac is ''imaged'' and subsequently re-booted, puppet is run at

service won't restart puppetd
I''ve got the following class that runs if I activate the repo in /etc/yum.conf. If I run "puppetd -t" from the command line it will restart puppetd fine. If I let the class run on it''s own as a deamon puppetd does not restart. The puppetmaster on the other hand does restart using either method. I ran the client in "--debug" but that doesn''t seem to

WWDC Puppeteer lunch
Reminder for Mac Puppeteers going to WWDC How about we meet for lunch at noon on Tuesday. Let''s try to get the table closet to the Odwalla refrigerator, just for reference. We can get more specific on this list on the 8th after we verify the set up. I might even get there a little earlier and put down "reserved" tags. --- Thank you, Allan Marcus Solutions Architect Central

How best to monitor puppet?
We want to use Nagios to monitor out puppet server so we can be notified if it goes down. We are using Fusion Passenger and Apache on Red Hat. Any suggestion for what and how to monitor? -- Thanks, Allan Marcus 505-667-5666 Allan@lanl.gov -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Puppet Users" group. Problem adding facts ...
I have created my first ''fact'', first attempt at Ruby too, and configured the fileserver to server it but when a Fedora (5 or 6) client sync''s puppetd appears to hang. CentOS clients sync and use the new fact fine. Find attached the fact file and the output from ''puppetd --debug --factsync'' on a FC5 client is below. This is a 0.20.1 client and

Problem with adding custom facts
Hi I''m trying to add extra facts to facter. The puppetd is running on Debian Etch Amd64 as Xen 3.1 guest. I''ve follow the Wiki on adding the facts. First I used relative path in the manifest and added "factsync=true" in client''s puppetd.conf. And then tested it with "puppetd -vt". But no matter what i tried, this error came: File paths must be fully

puppetmaster built via puppetd
hi, i''m trying to set up my puppetmaster infrastructure with multiple puppetservers behind load balancers in each of our datacenters. i''m using 0.24.6. i''ve read the howto on puppet scalability, and i think i''ve got the ssl config working correct, but i''m noticing that when puppetd is used to build a puppetmaster, some of the files in $vardir/ ssl

How Does the Interaction Between Facter, Clients, and the Server work
Group - I''m putting a presentation together for $work (a large .gov) and I want to make sure I get my facts (pun intended) straight ... Are the following steps for Facter-Client-Server interaction correct (I have a feeling not): 1. Client puppet run is initiated (via regular schedule, puppetrun, or puppetd) 2. The client contacts the server and downloads any custom facts it does not

Mac OS X pkgs up.
So I''ve done some Mac OS X pkgs for the latest Facter and Puppet, as well as a combined mpkg for them both. Jeff McCune and I are doing a fair bit of testing on them this week in preparation for MacWorld, so I wasn''t going to upload them to the official site for another few days, but they''re looking pretty good. http://explanatorygap.net/puppet/Facter_1.3.8.pkg.zip

Noop and "dangerous" classes
Hello all, I''m thinking about a configuration class that, amongst other things execs out to a ''dangerous'' configuration script. I''d like to make this a noop by default, so the operator has to try a bit harder to invoke it. So I thought about doing something like: class blah { exec { danger: noop => true, tag => hitme, command
