EC2 with puppet bootstrap notes and scripts
Hello...
I wanted to be able to startup an EC2 instance with one command and
have a fully functioning server without having to shell into each new
instance and configure the bits to allow puppet to finish the
configuration. Here are some notes I came up with for bootstrapping an
ec2 instance with puppet using Ubuntu 10.04. I left out a lot of things
about creating and running custom AIM

Environment specified by external nodes ignored
My custom external nodes script sets the environment variable, but Puppet
ignores it.
For testing, I have a manifest that deploys this template to a file:
environment = <%= environment %>
The output from my external nodes script:

classes:
- devhost
environment: development
parameters:
memcached_memory: ''32''
But running "puppetd --test" results in the

Fact auto sync reloading
So we run puppetd as a long running ruby process on the hosts. When we update a fact that gets auto sync''d to the host it seems when puppetd wakes up and starts its catalog run it doesn''t re-sync the facts. It you run it standalone it will or if you restart the service then it will do the right thing. Do other people see this? Or have you all gone to running out of cron?

Do we need a new name for "--test"?
https://projects.puppetlabs.com/issues/2476
This does seem to confuse a fair few new users.
What would be a better name for "--test"?

Mac OS X pkgs up.
So I''ve done some Mac OS X pkgs for the latest Facter and Puppet, as well as
a combined mpkg for them both.
Jeff McCune and I are doing a fair bit of testing on them this week in
preparation for MacWorld, so I wasn''t going to upload them to the official
site for another few days, but they''re looking pretty good.

Puppet agent creates certificates for localhost.localdomain and does not pick up the changed hostname
Hi Everyone,
I am using Puppet 2.6.5 to configure fresh VMs. These VMs have their
hostname set to localhost.localdomain initially at boot-time.
There is this script file that runs in rc.local and this is what I do
inside it
1. I change the hostname from localhost to xxx.xxxxxx using the
hostname command.
2. start the puppet agent as /usr/sbin/puppetd --certname=xxx.xxxxxx

alternate hostnames, keys, and certs
I''d like to extend my use of puppet to manage my desktop/notebook macs.
As others have noted, the hostname of the mobile machines tends to change frequently, so basing the node name (in my site.pp) and the corresponding cert and private key names seems to be an issue.
I seem to recall somewhat talking about this at Puppet Camp last week…..
Generally my signing strategy is always to

strange string in /etc/shadow
Hi,
I am using puppet (version 0.25.5-1.e15 for redhat) for password
management for non-system users. This morning, users on some of my
puppet clients had their encrypted password strings in /etc/shadow
replaced with the following string:
YAML::syck::BadAlias
That has effectively broken the users'' ability to login to those
servers. Puppet will not overwrite that string with the

puppetd 0.25.4 with puppetmaster 0.24.8?
Our puppetmaster runs 0.24.8 on Ubuntu 9.10. Our clients are either
Ubuntu 9.10 or Ubuntu 8.04.
We''ve just brought up our first Ubuntu 10.04 machine. This machine
installs puppetd 0.25.4.
The Ubuntu 10.04 machine can''t seem to present it''s certificate request
properly.
In my masterhttp.log, I see

Workstations and Certs
I am trying to come up with a workable solution in managing numerous
Mac workstations allowing a high degree of flexibility with regards to
certs.
My puppet environment is setup to application installation on machines
that have been ''imaged'' with a base OS and the puppet and facter apps.
So, when a Mac is ''imaged'' and subsequently re-booted, puppet is run

Switching from webrick to mongrel
I got tired of restarting my puppetmaster when it stopped responding and
finally switched to mongrel last night.
When running under mongrel, what sort of concurrent connection rates are
people able to get? I dont know how many individual puppetmaster
processes I should spawn, or how to tell when I should span more.
Perhaps I need more than two, because this morning I had a look at how

About autosigning and the FAQ entry
Hello!
The FAQ contains an entry about autosigning:
http://reductivelabs.com/trac/puppet/wiki/FrequentlyAskedQuestions#why-shouldn-t-i-use-autosign-for-all-my-clients
It says:
> The certificate itself is stored, so two nodes could not connect with
the same CN
I tried this (using 0.25.4), and actually, that doesn''t seem to be
correct. I was able to run puppetd on two different

Managing cronjobs as a file in solaris with appendifnosuchline for specific servers
I want to manage cronjobs as a " file " in solaris through puppet and
not using the puppet cron resource.
I will be managing the file /var/spool/cron/crontabs/root.
I want the cron file to be same across all servers except some servers
will have additional cron entries.
How can I append to the file /var/spool/cron/crontabs/root , something
like appendifnosuchline in cfengine?

State of Development
Hi all,
I''m sure you''re all wondering what the heck is going on with

monitoring puppet
Hi,
I was wondering what people out there are doing to monitor puppetd in
large environments. I''d love to hear what the best practices are around
this.
We have a few hundred hosts and are currently looking at the timestamps
on the yaml files in /var/lib/puppet/yaml/facts/ on puppetmasters to
make sure all clients are alive. Is it true that for a given client the
fact file on the

How Does the Interaction Between Facter, Clients, and the Server work
Group -
I''m putting a presentation together for $work (a large .gov) and I want to
make sure I get my facts (pun intended) straight ...
Are the following steps for Facter-Client-Server interaction correct (I have
a feeling not):
1. Client puppet run is initiated (via regular schedule, puppetrun, or
puppetd)
2. The client contacts the server and downloads any custom facts it does not

Solaris 10 Client "Default Provider for User" Woes Again

Puppet Windows: Spaces in file paths a problem?
I thought I read somewhere in Puppet docs/wiki... that it is
"recommended" to avoid spaces in file paths, or some similar verbiage,
but now I cant find it.
Does Puppet have any known issues with spaces in file paths? It would
of course scare Windows admins away... So I hope I am wrong in
thinking I read that.
Thanks a lot,
Mohamed.
