facter lsbdistid returns no result
Hi all, I am creating a recipe for rhel boxes which needs to
determine what type of install is present (server or client). I
thought I would use the facter fact lsbdistid for this purpose but
when I run "facter lsbdistid" from the command line nothing is
returned. If I just run facter and grep for lsbdistid, what I am
looking for is returned. Does anyone know why this might be?

Factor questions
Hello,
I''m new to puppet and facter. Initially we are planning on using
facter/puppet to inventory machines (Mac, Ubuntu, and RHEL). We plan
on writing a number of custom facts. Obviouly some of the facts will
only be specific to some OSs. I know there is a "confine" method, but
it confuses me. It seems the confine statement in some of the recipes
and in the Turnbull book is

Is there a repository of Facter plugins that people have made? I''m working

use client''s server variable instead of $servername?
Our puppetmaster runs on a host with multiple interfaces connected to
various private networks, with different hostnames for each IP. I''m
trying to use $servername in modules to copy files over a private
network, but this is always set to the public hostname of the server.
That route is blocked by a firewall. Is there a way to use the server
variable in puppet.conf in manifests?

Hi all
We''re currently looking at the next release of Facter and the future
direction of the tool. I''d like to try and prompt some discussions on
facter and what people want from it.
As a starter here''s some (although not all) of the ideas we''ll be
working through:

setting environment variables
Hi all,
I''m running Puppet on FreeBSD and recently I started building my own
packages. I would like to set the PKGROOT variable on all hosts so
that packages are fetched from my server instead of freebsd.org. Is
it possible to set this with puppet?
I''ve read the suggestion on Trac [1], and it solves the problem when
puppet is run with an rc script, but it won''t work

ANNOUNCE: Facter 1.5
Hi all,
I''ve finally gotten around to releasing Facter 1.5.
As the version bump implies, this is a relatively significant release
(for a 2.3k line program, anyway). Mostly, the biggest change is
refactoring the code internally so that all of the functionality is
split into separate classes in separate files.
Also, the facts are all loaded on-demand, which provides dramatic

You cannot save facts to the code store; it is only used for getting facts from Facter
I have successfully updated puppet clients from my master using the
built-in WEBrick server. When I updated my setup to using
Apache2+passenger, my clients get this error message:

I was playing around with the generate() function and was wondering if
anyone was making us of it.
The current way I''m attempting to use it is to determine what the homedir of
a given user is.
I have:

$homedir = generate("/bin/sh", "-c", "grep ^${name} /etc/passwd | cut -d:

Custom facts for a puppetmasterless environment
I see the instructions for creating custom facter recipes here:
http://projects.reductivelabs.com/projects/puppet/wiki/Adding_Facts
and in this thread, James Turnbull suggests that Facter might some day
support other languages besides ruby:

Functions vs. Module Plugins vs. Facts
Hey all,
I am trying to get a modified hostname (converting "blah-1234567" to
"1234567") to use in my manifests and templates. I have it working for
templates by using Ruby (*<%= hostname.split(''-'').pop.downcase %>*) but I
haven''t been able to use it in manifests because they don''t process ERB.
The way I see it I could do one of two

Question: Do all puppetd run at the same time?
(I know more questions... :-))
I know the default for puppetd is to check puppetmasterd every half
hour, but my question does each puppetd check at the same time? Or
does it depend when puppetd is started or like a cronjob does it run
at the 1/2 hour and hour mark? Is there some randomness to the times
they run?
My point is if they all run at the same time then if you have a large
amount of
