Darkstat
Hi all, please, tell me about security of Darkstat. Is it good idea to install it on firewall/gateway ? I'd like to measure our company traffic, but I do not have Apache running on the gateway. How could I redirect Darkstat's output to web-server inside company ? Or is there some other tool, which can measure in/out traffic and send output to another machine ? I know MRTG, but it uses

Nagios purge deleted items and notify nagios service problem
I am using stored configs to manage my nagios host and services checks and I have run into a problem that I have been unable to solve. When the stored configs are purged from puppet the nagios server correctly removes them from the services and hosts file but does not notify the nagios service and instead throws an error. So the entries are still there and nagios still reports on them until

long startup times for large file systems
Howdy, Rsync has been churning away for 45 mins, presumably bulding an in-core list of files to be copied to the destination. This is a very very large filesystem we are copying locally - approximately 4.2million files (WebCT). The resident process size for rsync has grown to 72Mb. - is this normal behaviour for a file system this size, and does rsync have the ability to handle such a large

How rsync works
Hi, I'm translating the document How rsync works to understand exactly how rsync works when it finds modified files. I'm translating "the sender" and I notice a strange fact. I would like to take an example where a byte is missing in a file. In facts : The generator has created a cheksum for the first file to the sender. Then, a checksum is created for the local file beginning

routing in xen 3.0 domU: icmp gets routed, but tcp/ip only partially
Hello folks, I have a really strange routing problem that no amount of googling and experimenting has been able to solve. Then again, I''m new to Xen and "advanced" networking, so I could be missing something very basic. Summary: an unprivileged domU with PCI frontend for a NIC is used as a router; icmp gets routed, but tcp/ip only partially. I''m using a xen-unstable

PANIC: share_modes_identical
When 2.2.4 was released, I updated my cvs and did ./configure and make (no special options). Since I came in somewhat early today and nobody was around I did the make install. Everything ran fine until I tried to load a particular file and I'm receiving the following error and unable to open the file on a network share. If I place the file on a local drive it loads fine. Permissions and

Building a NFS server with a mix of HDD and SSD (for caching)
Hi list, I'm building a NFS server on top of CentOS 8. It has 8 x 8 TB HDDs and 2 x 500GB SSDs. The spinning drives are in a RAID-6 array. They are 4K sector size. The SSDs are in RAID-1 array and with a 512bytes sector size. I want to use the SSDs as a cache using dm-cache. So here what I've done so far: /dev/sdb ==> SSD raid1 array /dev/sdd ==> spinning raid6 array I've

Should I dump my Nvidia card from the less known brand "Gainward"?
Hi everyone. I'm a big Free Software enthusiast and, therefore, I would very much like to use the nouveau free driver, instead of the proprietary one. My problem is that, looking for the cheapest option available, when I needed to buy a new graphics card, 2 years ago, I decided for a model from a brand that I had never heard of - called "Gainward" - because I thought it had a

rsync 2.5.6 still hangs
While syncing a directory with about 40 files of various sizes (4KB - 20MB), rsync will hang, in a repeatable manner. (Where "repeatable" means that I get identical logs with -vvv set, modulo the temp file names.) I am using rsync in "server" mode - started by xinetd. Both sides are rsync 2.5.6. The server is RH Linux 7.0 (yeah, I know...), clients are Debian unstable (kernel

Circumventing code/documentation mismatches ('R CMD check')

2.0.7 -> 3.0.0 upgrade
Hey all, I''m thinking about moving my 2.0.7 install over to 3.0.0 for eventual use in a production environment. Two questions: 1) Do people think 3.0.0 is ready for production - or is it just a testing/unstable playpen? 2) What do I have to change - just the xen-2.0.7.gz for do I have to recompile the dom0/domU kernels too? Cheers, Matthew Walster
