Oceanographic lattice plots?
R 1.8.0 on Windows XP Professional. A huge THANK YOU to the R Team for this marvelous software. I am making lattice plots of oceanographic data. The usual layout does not conform to plotting conventions that marine scientists use when depth is the independent variable. Under those conventions, plots are made with the origin at the upper left, depth on the vertical axis (increasing as it

Seeking Assistance: Plotting Sea Current Vectors in R
Dear Rcommunity, I hope this email finds you well. I am writing to seek your assistance with a data visualization problem I am facing while working with R. Problem Description: I have a dataframe named "df" containing the following columns: "longitude", "latitude", "sea_currents_mag", and "sea_currents_direction". The dataframe includes sea

need help with smooth.spline
Dear R listers, When using smooth.spline to interpolate data, results are generally good. However, some cases produce totally unreasonable results. The data are values of pressure, temperature, and salinity from a probe that is lowered into the ocean, and the objective is to interpolate temperature and salinity to specified pressures. While smooth.spline provides excellent values at the

Colleagues ---------------------------------- System info: R version rw1022 on NT ESS v. 5.1.18 using emacs ver. 20.4 ---------------------------------- As recommended, I keep separate directories for projects, but also use separate sub-directories for types of data (e.g. different oceanographic instruments) within projects. My problem is that I often need to access the objects and data (not

Computations slow in spite of large amounts of RAM.
Hi all, I am a beginner trying to use R to work with large amounts of oceanographic data, and I find that computations can be VERY slow. In particular, computational speed seems to depend strongly on the number and size of the objects that are loaded (when R starts up). The same computations are significantly faster when all but the essential objects are removed. I am running R on a machine

k-d tree for loess
I am exploring the use of loess for oceanographic applications and would like to plot the locations (longitude and latitude) points where the models (salinity~temperature*longitude*latitude, parametric="temperature") are fitted. Chambers and Hastie(1993) explains the locations are nodes of a k-d tree. but I cannot find anything about accessing this information. It would be useful to

question on axis box with asp=1
I've been using (and loving) R for quite a while now, but I have to admit that something simple is still stumping me. The question is how I can control the box within which a plot is drawn, in cases where I'm controlling the aspect ratio with the "asp" argument. The problem comes up in pdf() and png() output formats, but also with interactive windows, and so I'll

[LLVMdev] Control Data Flow Graph (CDFG)
Hi John, My project is somewhat inbetween, but closer to the latter. If you are doing something related to synthesis, have you checked xPilot from UCLA? Search "llvm" in this paper <http://www.icims.csl.uiuc.edu/~dchen/xpilot-TechCon2005.pdf> Anyway, thanks for the information! :-) Wenhao On Tue, Mar 3, 2009 at 6:30 AM, <llvmdev-request at cs.uiuc.edu> wrote: > >

Differencing data by groups
Colleagues, I am analyzing data collected during oceanographic cruises. We have conducted many cruises over the last decade. On each cruise we visit ~50 stations. At each station (termed EventNum)we lower an instrument that measures depth, temperature, salinity and oxygen every few seconds as it is lowered through the water. Data from all EventNums on all cruises are stacked, generating a data

What's the point of UseDNS?
According to the manpage: UseDNS Specifies whether sshd should look up the remote host name and check that the resolved host name for the remote IP address maps back to the very same IP address. The default is ``yes''. Thing is, while sshd *checks*, this doesn't actually control whether or not the client is allowed to connect, it seems at most to be an option that causes

Need a better undersanding of form helpers
perhaps someone can take a little time to give me a better understanding of how to use form helpers. Here is what I''m working with in my app: user model - (the table where a user registers their information) it contains the following fields - first_name last_name email account_type (currently set to string but will probably be a select box with options) password_salt (I''m

R and marine protected areas: algorithms for site selection
Dear listers, a central problem in conservation biology is the selection of sites in reserve network design. many algorithms have been published, and I was wondering any have been implemented in R. I did not seen anything on CRAN or R-help, or on the web in general. Best regards, Eric Eric Pante ---------------------------------------------------------------- College of Charleston, Grice

FW: test of spatial dependence?? - ask a geographer (was ask an ecologist)?
No, you do not necessarily need the XY coordinates. You can also use polygon (field, in your case) adjacency information. See Rogerson, Peter A. 2001. _Statistical methods for geography_. Thousand Oaks: Sage. You might also look at GeoDA, a free and soon-to-be open source spatial analysis package. For your application, it might be easier to use than R. VOIPTalk silver service
There was some discussion on this list recently about the voiptalk silver service. I've just had an e-mail from them saying that the price has been reduced to 2.99 per month. However, they still only provide an 0870 number whereas pipecall provide a local call rate 0845 number in the fee. Chris
