Samba 3.4 authentication suddenly very slow.
After a scheduled power outage, with all hosts cleanly shut down, I'm having a bad performance issue on my samba server.
This configuration has worked well for over a year, but after the power outage, attempting to access any share takes over a minute.
net ads testjoin is fine,
wbinfo -u and wbinfo -g returns the correct information.
The shares CAN be accessed, once accessed, read and write

X Servers xorg.conf file changing.
Twice now over the past year, I've had something edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file without user intervention.
The machine in question is a 3 headed X-Terminal that displays the accelerator control system application for a medical proton accelerator, and operated by staff who do NOT have root or root like access (sudo) on the X-Term, as once it's configured, it should never need changing.

Very strange login errors.
We're finally trying to move off of Samba 2.x, and are having some very strange login issues.
I've built two identical boxes, both running fully patched Ubuntu 9.10 x64, both have as packaged by Ubuntu 3.4.0 samba installs.
Both are joined to the Active Directory server fine.
net ads testjoin on both hosts reports "Join is OK"
getent passwd on both hosts returns the full user

gvim current directory
When I gvim a file from gnome,
gvim's working directory is always my home directory.
That is not what I want.
It is inconvenient for :vi , :r and :w something.else .
Is there a way to automatically cause gvim's current
directory to be the directory of the edited file?
I am aware of workarounds involving the command line.
I am aware of gedit.
I am looking for a way to give gvim the correct

I've just upgraded from my old F9 box to C7, which of course means lots
of changes.? However, the ones are are annoying me most are with VIM.
No matter what I do I can't get? gvim to open in a reasonable size. I
have a dual headed setup (laptop + external) and every time gvim opens
it takes up both screens.
I've tried a few suggestions including the one below without success.?

hard disk install failure
Has anybody successfully installed CentOS-
I tried (several times) installing CentOS-5.6 from a hard disk,
and each time it failed after installing all the rpms,
with the warning "The installation has tried to mount image #2,
but cannot find it on the hard drive."
When I pressed the Debug button one time after the failure,
it seemed to say that it was looking for the file in

Streaming ogg from filepointer pointing to archive of many oggs. Ogg stream does not stop after end of one ogg file - what to do ?
Hello,
I'm currently trying to implement streaming off ogg-files out of an archive
file using SDL and SDL_mixer for playback. Therefore i create a FILE *
filepointer, place it to the beginning of an ogg file inside the archive and
hand over the filepointer to ov_open. ( command: ov_open(fp, &music->vf,
NULL, 0) ). This works fine so far. The problem is: if i put many oggs

Multihomed puppet-server Multidomain SSL Problem
Hello List,
I have a problem with the CA on my Puppetmaster. This Puppetmaster is
connected to different Networks with different sub domainnames. The Puppet
clients connecting via different Interfaces. There is no routing between

Maybe that's because the M$ "solutions" are crap, and much better
alternatives already exist.

Strange alterations to vim and related packages on KVM host
OS CentOS-6.2 with updates to present.
I use git on this host to manage configuration changes and to monitor
package alterations. This is not meant to be a security check. It is
simply a way for me to easily recover from fumble fingered
configuration changes.
Yesterday git status reported that the following files had changed
since the previous commit:

Gnome desktop, workspaces and windows
I was editing a file in gvim when I inadvertently pressed some key combination
that caused the vim window to disappear from the desktop. I looked in ps and
found that it was still running. Checking the tool bar at the bottom of my
display I noticed that a large rectangle now occupied the second of four boxes
on the extreme right hand side. Clicking on that box brought back the gvim
instance but

sorting character vectors
The following is not what I expected in sorting characters (single letters
and the same letters with preceding spaces).
Can someone enlighten me as to why the following might be a correct result
for sorting?
; x <- c(LETTERS[1:3], paste(" ", LETTERS[1:3], sep=""))
; x
[1] "A" "B" "C" " A" " B" " C"
; sort(x)
