Namespace problem? duplicated folders...
I'm sure this is related to name-spaces, but for some reason [brain damage perhaps? :) ] I can't seem to figure out how to fix it. In TBird, for example, I have a folder tree that looks like this Inbox -| Folder-A Folder-B Folder-C Folder-A Folder-B Folder-C And Folder-A, Folder-B, Folder-C are the same folders, just shown twice. [In two different hierarchies.] I'm using

Dovecot vs MBox
I'm still in the "what's wrong" stage of figuring out what's going on. But I've got a mail user who isn't getting new messages. Postfix accepts it and drops it in the users mbox. [This is verified. If I tail the Mbox, I can see the new messages.] "Mail" will see the messages too. But dovecot doesn't seem to know they exist. I don't think the MBox

smb.conf for Windows clients
So, I'm trying to paw through the long set of smb.conf options - and it's rather daunting. I'm wondering what smb.conf options are most important/appropriate/common for mostly Windows XP/7/(possibly v8) clients. doveadm sync backup from old to new server
So that was really helpful for me to understand that a lot more clearly. Thanks! [Many, many thanks @Plutocrat!!] But I'm still getting a similar failure. Let me give the command I'm using. doveadm backup -D -u user at abc.net \ ssh root at po.abc.net \ docker exec b3093cxxxxxx doveadm sync -D -u user at abc.net The "local" server is where the data/mail currently is. RSAT Hang
So, I setup Samba on Ubuntu 18.04, using the packaged Samba version. [Thanks Rowland/Louis et al.] I'm doing some testing/tinkering using FreeNAS as a share, using the AD as the authentication back-end. As part of that process, you need to add a computer account and change some security settings. I setup RSAT and can see the AD tree, and add users etc. When I try to switch to advanced view

Samba4 on Ubuntu 18.04 Howto setup ADDC with bind9_DLZ (extra part 4.8.1 samba)
So, I'm curious about the contrast between modifying netplan vs simply disabling systemd.resolved Is there some advantage to the gyrations to make netplan work, vs simply disabling resolved and manually defining the IP and DNS server? [I'm not complaining, I'm thankful for all the options - just wanting to have the best handle possible on the reasoning behind one method vs the other.]

rsync'ing samba shares
I know this has come up a bit in the past, but consider this situation: Two Samba4 DC's - and I want to "mirror" the data shares to the "backup" DC in case we lose the primary DC and it's file shares. [A cheap, dirty, poor-mans semi-CTDB. How did you ever guess that Red Green was helping me?!] The easiest way is probably rsync'ing the data. However, will that

Making users local administrators
I have Samba 4 (lastest version, I think) set up for Active Driectory. Everything is working just, using Microsoft's Group Policy Editor to manage stuff. Except one thing: For reasons you don't want to get me started on, I need all users to have local administrative priviliges on any computer on the domain. This is supposed to be a simple, straightforward thing. Google has led me to

Ubuntu 20.04 setup
Louis, et al. Hi! So, I'm working on a 20.04 setup. I think I'll still use the distro version and not Louis' packages. [No offense Louis - I just need to be sure if (forbid) anything happens to Louis, his packages aren't going to be supported any more, and I'll be on my own for security updates etc. The 20.04 versions are pretty current, and I think will meet my needs for the

GPO / Sysvol problems
So, I'm seeing some very odd behavior. I may have multiple issues - so I'm simply starting holding the thread of the problem and working my way back. So, the root symptom I'm having is that a GPO isn't applying correctly. [Roaming profiles namely.] I have two DC's. I change the GPO on one DC and rsync the update to the other DC. I can see that the files get updated. Yet when

DDNS, DHCP and AD
Looking for general theory here - perhaps this will devolve into more "how to" later, but right now I need overall understanding. We handle DHCP outside AD. We also do DDNS there, and handle DNS lookups. Here's what the current setup looks like We have a pair of DHCP servers (ISC DHCPD) and those same boxes handle DNS for the network. They're in the DNS domain of, lets say;

doveadm sync backup from old to new server
So I've done quite a lot of searching on the list and on the web - and perhaps my google-fu is really bad - but I can't find any real recipes on how to sync mail from the old server to the new. As an FYI - the old server is a CPanel/WHM setup on a VPS. The new is mailcow - which uses docker. However, I don't think either of these platforms is what's causing the issue - but

is a self signed certificate always invalid the first time?
So i?m using dovecot, and i created a self signed certificate with mkcert.sh based on dovecot-openssl.cnf. The name in there matches my mail server. The first time it connects in mac mail however, it says the certificate is invalid and another server might pretend to be me etc. I then have the option of trusting it. Is this normal behaviour? Will it always be invalid if it?s not signed by a

DC disaster recovery
So, I'm generally running my DC's in VM's on Xen [XCP-NG]. And I'm considering recovery from different disaster situations - say a crashed/corrupt DC. Or hardware failure. Yes, I could run a second VM with a second DC. But unless I setup another XCP server and put the VM on that - the biggest threat to the current VM/DC is the hardware it's running on. So, it really

Ubuntu compile/install location
Ok, while I'm usually more comfortable installing an RPM or DEB package and having the package maintainer handle all the details for me - I don't get a choice here. The latest Ubuntu 12.04 package is the Alpha18 release. So, I've compiled my own copy of Samba4.01 - and surprise, surprise, it went well. So the crux of the question is: Where should I install it to. [What directory.]

Network browsing in S4
So, if I understand things correctly, NMBD or network browsing isn't functional under S4 yet. [At least I don't believe it was in 4.03 - and I don't think that's changed.] In the setup I'm referencing, I have a pair of S4 servers acting as full AD servers. [No Win AD servers present.] I have some cases where I need accurate NetBIOS name resolution, [and perhaps Network
