You should use whatever the appropriate import commands are for your own gridded rainfall data. If you have a different format, you might or might not be able to import it directly with raster. ?raster will tell you more about the kinds of formats

Fwiw the engine behind geom_raster needs explicit observation-per-row form for input (with no structural normalization), so conversion to points is perfectly proper here, albeit confusing in context.
