nmap not scanning networks?
Hello! Attempt to scan a network with any method except plain ping results in an error: truss nmap -sT -p 21 '172.19.17.*' [...] sendto(0x4,0x8094200,0,0x0,{ AF_INET 172.19.17.0:0 },0x10) ERR#49 'Can't assign requested address' [...] What's strange that man on send(2) doesn't state that EADDRNOTAVAIL can ever be returned from sendto(). Syslogd / rc
Just updated our syslog server to 4.8-STABLE #0: Mon Apr 7 09:39:27 EDT 2003 In my rc.conf I have: # fgrep syslog /etc/rc.conf syslogd_program="/usr/local/sbin/syslog-ng" syslogd_flags="" Syslog-ng starts up appropriately; but syslogd also tries to start now. Since the port's already in use, rc hangs during boot until I ctrl-c at that point. Perhaps something's not

ttyv for local only?
I get this in my security postings. Jun [undisclosed time] [undiscl.] login: 2 LOGIN FAILURES ON ttyv2 Jun [undisclosed time] [undiscl.] login: 2 LOGIN FAILURES ON ttyv2, qmaild As it turns out, I'm not running qmail :) And if I did, it would definitely have a nologin shell. But that's beside the point- I have had a perception that ttyv was for local/console logins, and that just

mail without mta
Dear list! I'd like to know if some- one has experience with system running no mta (aka sendmail). I have single comp, not server, not lan. Yes! Sendmail is nice, but it is too big for simple tasks I have for it. My intention is to use apps small as possible. This letter gone from mutt directly to ssmtp, that processed it to my isp. About kern.ipc.somaxconn and netstat
Hello. We have a webserver using FreeBSD, we read about tunning kern.ipc.somaxconn (http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/configtuning-kernel-limits.html) so the OS can handle all the connections. Is there a way to know how many connections are established in a certain moment?. I know about netstat(1) but is there any other command that we can use to know the exact amount of

ntp and samba43 on FreeBSD-103.
Recently we have been having a lot of trouble with time synchronisation between our samba DC and the domain clients. We are not sure what started this issue since the Samba domain went live on October 11, 2016 and the issues only began to surface this past January but at some point the time on the clients and the DC diverged enough that we began to get strange network errors. Once we figured out

Changing the imaps port #
Dovecot 2.3.4, FreeBSD 11.2 Due to comcast buisness ISP intercepting imaps I need to have my clients connect to non-standard port (9999). Previously I had been using stunnel to receive the imaps connection and forward it to the imap port over 127.0.0.1. But I would like to retire stunnel and have my imap clients connect remotely. I have configured the imap-login service - service imap-login {

my mistake compiling kernel
Dear FreeBSD! On my home machine I`ve tried to compile custom kernel for 5_0 release. In a script commented out all scsi, raid, ethernet, nfs options, I had not. So I`ve included atapicam options and "device pcm" for AC97 sound chip. After all, result was an error: linking kernel if.o: In function 'if_setlladdr': if.o(.text+0x2725): undefined reference to 'arp_ifinit'

Asterisk/Freebsd network connections
For those of you running * on FreeBSD: I compiled everything and can start. Sockstat -l shows that Asterisk listens on the correct interfaces and ports. Sniffing, I see registrations coming in to SIP debug, but nothing seems so reach Asterisk except IAX registration from a peer. Can't dial anywhere, can't reach the Asterisk with asterisk -r. Anyone recognizing this problem? * Recent

Need help troubleshooting TCP thrashing, possible kernel bug?
I have a FreeNAS 9.3 server running Samba Version 4.3.6 and a bunch of Windows and Linux clients. Everything's been running fine for a while and nothing changed on the server. Recently (Jan 27th) some of the Archlinux clients updated from a 4.8.x kernel to a 4.9.x kernel. Again, things ran fine. Then on Jan 30th around 2am the Archlinux clients using 4.9.x kernels and utilizing mount.cifs to
