Attacks on ssh port
Hi, Is there a security problem with ssh that I've missed??? Ik keep getting these hords of: Failed password for root from 69.242.5.195 port 39239 ssh2 with all kinds of different source addresses. They have a shot or 15 and then they are of again, but a little later on they're back and keep clogging my logs. Is there a "easy" way of getting these ip-numbers added to

Listening outside ipfw / program interface to ipfw
Hi, Two quick questions that I can't seem to find answers for using google. 1) is is possible to listen outside an ipfw firewall - that is have ethereal record the packets before ipfw starts dropping them? If so how? 2) Is there an api to ipfw that will let me manipulate rules, query stats etc? I need something faster than running the command line binary? Thanks John

Increasing the DMESG buffer....
Hi, As a next question to my building this server. I'm nogt able to get a full verbose dmesg. Probably because the kernelbuffer for it is too small. I know there used to be a kernel option to increase it. But I can not find it with the setting in NOTES or any other place I looked.... Is it still there? Thanx, --WjW

Fedora FC1 RPMs
I've spent the morning looking at making some RPMs for Fedora Core 1 and run into a problem with GSSAPI. Basically the default install of Fedora doesn't come with the necessary gssapi code to build the RPMs by default (i.e. you need to say %define kerberos5 0 in openssh.spec). Since Fedora is going to fork off from RedHat I was going to create a set of patches to make a

Yum issues with swatch
I am trying to install swatch via yum but it doesn't recognize swatch as being available. I have tried various naming conventions such as swatch-3 etc but still no go. I have Dags repo in yum.conf and I see it listed there on his webpage. In addition, I did a yum search swatch and still nada. Anyone have an idea as to why it will not install? I'm running CentOS 3.5 Thanks, Ed

Certain scripts "hang" the terminal on logout
I have an init script that after running, causes my terminal not to log out cleanly. Here's what i mean: # /etc/init.d/script restart << this runs fine, returns my shell prompt # exit << When I enter this command, my shell window just stays "stuck" and actually won't close down. Anyone know why this happens?

How did I Break ssh?
Every attempt to connect to anything from a new FreeBSD system results in a "host key verification failed." ssh 127.0.0.1 even fails this way. I started with a new FreeBSD4.7 installation and un-tarred the contents of another 4.7 system to essentially clone this one. My tar ball purposefully did not have the /etc/ssh directory in it so as to not overwrite any of the files in the

install of Pod::Simple through CPAN
I'm running CentOS 4.4. I'm trying to install swatch (a log watcher) using CPAN. It's getting hung up on trying to install a dependency, Pod::Simple So before I get too wrapped up in this, I have the following questions: 1. Is there an alternative way to install swatch? I didn't get a hit when I tried yum. 2. I'm not wedded to swatch. Is there another log checker

Hi, I would like to use the effect() function (actually a slightly modified version of it) on the output of the lmer() function in the lme4 package. OpenSSH and Redhat 8
John, The following steps should work for you (or anyone buildling on a RedHat box): 1) Get the official OpenSSH source RPM from ftp://ftp.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/OpenSSH/portable/rpm/SRPMS/openssh-3.7.1p2-1.src.rpm 2) Do 'rpmbuild --rebuild ./openssh-3.7.1p2-1.src.rpm' from where you saved the file. 3) This should create the following files in /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386:

Defining an ex-gaussian PDF
How does one define PDFs as yet undefined in R, such as the ex- gaussian, the sum of two RVs, one exponential, one Gaussian? The PDF would then be the convolution of an exponential PDF, dexp(), and a normal, dnorm(). Kindly cc me in your reply to r-help.
