should vsftpd be disabled in favour of sftp for security reasons?
(another in an ongoing list of things i just want to clarify for the
sake of future courses taught on centos.)
from this RHEL doc page:
http://docs.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/5/html/Deployment_Guide/s1-openssh-server-config.html
the reader is advised to, for the sake of security, remove/disable
vsftpd, ostensibly in favour of sftp/sftp-server. really?

Apparently no swap configured
Hello,
I'm in a slightly unusual situation and I'd really appreciate some advice.
I installed CentOS 5.2 on a server about a month ago.
Today I happened to check the 'free' command and noticed that the Swap
line reads as follows:
Swap: 0 0 0
I'm pretty certain that when I installed the OS and created a custom
partition table, that I defined a

Hi,
When browsing the (excellent) deployment guide I found the following

[OT] Leveno HDD caddies
This is very off topic but, I have no idea where else to ask. We obtained
some used Leveno CTO7483 desktop units for experimentation. I had intended to
install CentOS-7 on one of them. As they arrived with a vendor upgraded
Windows 7ProSP1 install without media I decided to pull the disk drive and
install onto a spare drive that I installed.
Those of you with any experience with this model

openLDAP under CentOS-6
I've been hard hit by the lack of CentOS-6 documentation
mentioned in another thread.
The openLDAP setup has been changed completely between CentOS 5 and 6,
and I haven't been able to find any reasonably coherent instructions
explaining how to upgrade.
If anyone knows of such a document I should be most grateful to learn of it.
Actually I have openLDAP working (though unencrypted) with my

NFS hard mount
Is there a tunable to set NFS hard mount time out? For instance, if the
server becomes unavailable for extended amount of time, say 1 hour. I would
like to timeout after 30 secs.
(Soft mount isn't an option, BTW)

Thanks in advance.

KVM as a desktop
I am nearing the end of a project that moved our disparate services
and hosts onto kvm virtualized servers. What I am now contemplating
is setting up my desktop as a virtual host and using one of the guests
as my primary workstation.
However, I am not sure how this would work in practice. I am
accustomed to working with virtual instances via ssh (a terminal
window) and with my desktop system in

Centos 6 - Persistant static routes
I know how to use 'ip' to set up a static route, e.g.:
ip route add 192.168.128.0/17 via 40.53.24.3 dev eth0
But if you reboot or restart network, you loose this. Thus you have to
make it persistant. I found:
http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/configuring-static-routes-in-debian-or-red-hat-linux-systems.html
where it says to add to ifcfg-eth0:
192.168.128.0/17 via 40.53.24.3
But this

Setting up a pci passthrough device
I have been investigating pci pass-through for virtualized
guests and the documentation I have found seems to me to
lack a certain consistency in its example. This may be
due to my not understanding what it is trying to inform
me.
What I wish to do is to configure a pci multi-port serial
i/o card for use by a single virtual host.
I start by running lspci -v on the host to identify the
serial

CentOS 6 (and 5.6) doc on http://www.centos.org/docs
Hi documentation team,
As CentOS 6 is now being released to the mirrors, it would be a good
time to think about putting the accurate documentation on
http://www.centos.org/docs
Red Hat changed their documentation license in the past and they are now
using the CC-by-SA license.
My own understanding (but IANAL) is that we can just share the
documentation , and just linking back to upstream
