New PDC
Hi -
I'm setting up a new Samba PDC here in a 30-person architectural office.
The current PDC is running on an older computer and hasn't been
updated in a while.
The new PDC will be Samba 3.4.0 running on Ubuntu 9.10. We don't use
roaming profiles.
My question is this - is there a way to "seamlessly" migrate the
desktops to the new PDC from the old one without

SAMBA and the Archive Bit
Hello All,
Touching up a file is supposed to switch on the Archive bit. However, I can
only get this to happen if the client doing the editing is also the owner.
This is fine for owner access in the HOME directories, but is useless when a
file is modified by any member of a group. The impact is that my incremental
backup only backs up a group rwx file when it is modified by the owner. This

Excel - share Access Denied after opening file
I have a strange problem with Excel + Word from an XP Pro (SP2) PC to a
Linux Samba share (HOME).
If I
1 - open Excel,
2 - then open a file on my Samba share HOME,
3 - any subsequent attempts to save or open a file on the HOME share
immediately result in an 'Access Denied' windows error message
as soon as I select the root of the HOME share!
The same thing

File owner SID instead of name showing for one user
Hello,
I recently migrated all data and user accounts from our old Samba file
server to a new (Samba 3.4.0 on Unbuntu 9.10) one. Everything is working
fine except that there is one user whose SID is showing in the "Owner"
column of Windows Explorer instead of the user name.
It's not a big problem, but the user is uncomfortable with it and I'd
like to know why it's

Samba/Windows question: problems loading roaming profiles
Hello everyone!
I'm trying (unsuccessfully until now) configure two Samba
servers:
- Server A. Acting as PDC in a Windows 2000/XP
domain and as profile server.
- Server B. Acting as profile server.
I have users whose profiles are in server A and others
whose profiles are in the server B. The server where
each user's profile lives is identified by the main
group (GID) of the user (that

dos filemode not working (NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED)
dear all,
switching from 3.0.22 to 3.023b, we can't get the parameter "dos
filemode" to work (giving members of a group with full control the
ability to change the acl's). in previous versions we were using "acl
group control" which served well (now marked deprecated).
the share section of smb.conf is:

Archive bit oddities
Hello everyone,
I've been scouring the web, reading documentation and experimenting with
settings and I am having no luck in getting the behavior of the archive
bit to be anywhere near expected. I have the file foo.txt in the
personal folder that has the ADS group DOMAIN USERS with read/write
capability (660). When the user jsmith (domain user) modifies the file,
the archive bit is not

Other users home share contains contents of my home share
I have 3.2.7 as part of an Openfiler install. I have a homes share setup,
but when I view any other users home share (\\server\otherusername) I see
the contents of my own home share. I have the server joined to AD with
winbind, and I am in a group that is listed as the owner of the other users
home share, with rwx. What I am trying to do is allow a domain group access
to all of the home shares via

OS 10.3.3 client File saving problems
Hello,
I administrate a modest network of 12 Mac (os x 10.3.3) and PC clients
(win xp) connecting to a Samba server running Redhat enterprise Linux 3
and Samba 3.0.2
We just recently switched to this configuration from a Win2000 file
server running SMB and AFP that did not have any of the issues I list
below.
My OS X users are running into occasional yet persistent problems saving

Windows 98 caching too much
Hi,
We have an old Win98 box at work that is used for programming GALs and
EEPROMs, however we find that if the file is modified on the Unix side the
Win98 box doesn't notice. This is rather annoying when you are iterating a
design as you can imagine!
One work around is to open a DOS box and 'type' the file - this seems to force
it to re-get the file.
Does anyone have any

strange behavior with "dos filetime resolution = yes"
Hello,
i see a strange behavior with timestamps of files on a samba share
(4.2.6 on SLES 12 SP1 and 4.1.8 on Ubuntu 14.04) with "dos filetime
resolution = yes": On older samba versions, windows properties dialogue
correctly shows only even seconds, but (at least) the two indicated
versions show sometimes even and sometimes odd seconds if the file has

More on the archive bit saga
Thanks to all that have helped so far.
I now have a test server running on Ubuntu 6.06 and Samba 3.0.22. I also
configured ACL and user_xattr on the filesystem running the shares. But
now I have very strange behavior that I hope someone has a clue about.
User smith can open two files (foo.txt and faa.txt) with Notepad,
Wordpad and Microsoft Word. The behavior for all three is different:

dos filetimes = yes is not correctly used? - utime function calls fail (Version 3.0.7)
Hello everbody,
this is really urgent.
at the moment the status is as follows:
We changed the primafy group to a group without german characters: "?,?,?".
It works fine, as long as the primary group as full access to the file.
If not, it doesn't work.
The Problem in detail:
Situation 1:
User is member of DOMAIN+GROUP.
DOMAIN+GROUP is owner of file

Problem with 3.0.7
Hello everybody,
when accessing a file, (opening and closing it, excel tries to restore old times.
I can delete the file, rename and everything else, but i'm not able to reset the times....
Owner of the file is user2 which is also member of group 1.
If i create a file and user1 opens it, the access times are reset correctly. (same share, directory)
i have the following error message:
