NTP and virtual guests
We encountered a problem with respect to KVM virtual host restore and
NTP. Specifically, our VM test host was shutdown by an extended power
outage and when power returned all of the restored guests were
immediately shutdown by ntp because the time differential between the
restored systems and that of the ntpd sync servers exceeded the panic
threshold.
This is not an acceptable situation so in the

ntp and samba43 on FreeBSD-103.
Recently we have been having a lot of trouble with time
synchronisation between our samba DC and the domain clients. We are
not sure what started this issue since the Samba domain went live on
October 11, 2016 and the issues only began to surface this past
January but at some point the time on the clients and the DC diverged
enough that we began to get strange network errors. Once we figured

I just wish to ensure that my conclusion respecting Samba, FreeBSD Jails, and
NTP is correct.
1. Unless configured otherwise Windows domain clients will query and obtain
their time from the samba_server DC.
2. Samba_server obtains its time from the OS, in this case a FreeBSD Jail.
3. FreeBSD Jails get their time from their host.

No. The error is not caused by anything else listening on 137.

Why the command 'service ntpd stop' cause the time reversed?
Hi guys,
Thanks for your reply.
I originally used the following command to synchronize time:
ntpdate 192.168.0.191
but got the error: ntpdate[16715]: the NTP socket is in use, exiting
So i used the way of stopping ntpd service.
Now I have known that using command "ntpdate -u 192.168.0.191" can solve the above error, and also know using ntpdate command is an improper way, i.e. should use

Why the command 'service ntpd stop' cause the time reversed?
Hi guys,
I don't use virtual machine.
The 192.168.0.191 is an internal ntpd server configured by administrator, so i can not see what ntp server it synchronizes to or what is its time reference.
But i have added a new line "server 192.168.0.191" into file "/etc/ntp.conf" on ntpd client machines, and the output to execute command ntpstat is as follows:
synchronised to NTP

Where can I find a list of the options and their usage and meanings for

Shutdown KVM guest not working
I am in the middle of a rather confusing situation. At
the moment I am unable to shutdown a KVM guest machine.
Nor am I presently able to open a virt-manager session on
the host.
I am not exactly sure what has happened but the problem
with the vm guest is that issuing a "virsh shutdown 1"
from the root console has no effect.

Problem with SSHD update.
This morning I applied the 13 or so new updates to my servers. On
one of them the ssh service and clients stopped working immediately
after the update. I restarted the server in anticipation that there
might be some instability introduced by updating on a system with
active ssh connections. However, this has not cleared the problem.
The packages in question are:

Help with at Bash script
I am attempting to get a script borrowed from DJB to work on my CentOS-6.6
box. Simplified it looks like this:
tcpdump -l -n -e port 53 \
| awk '{if ($14 ~ /A.*?/) print $15}' \
| while read domain ; do echo $domain ; done ;
The sticking point is the 'while read' construct. Run just as 'tcpdum | awk'
I get this:
