yum vs up2date
Which is better? Why?
I know yum is the official update mechanism here and in Fedora Core, but
that doesn't make yum better than up2date any more than Windows NT was
better than OS/2.
Let's try to keep the discussion objective:-)
I'm asking, hoping for some insights into why RH might (apparently) be
moving to yum in preference to up2date (yum is now used within Anaconda).

How should I create a repo on Centos 2.1?
I tracked down a createrepo rpm "for RHL 7.x, AS 2.1" etc (hosted by
Dag), but it's uninstallable.
Eventually I managed to create an rpm from the source (actually, that's
fairly easy when onw knows to say "python2"), but python-urlgrabber has
completely defeated me.
According to Dag, the problem is that "upstream" doesn't see the need to

CentOS and Atheros
What's the easiest path to having my Atheros wireless cards supported,
particularly in C5?
In the past, I've chosen to download source and build my own, but that's
become a little tiresome.
At one point, OpenSUSE was the easy option, but since 10.1 it's dropped
madwifi.

Centos 4.92
I'm looking at the first ISO image (I only have two so far), and I don't
see instructions a repo for preparing for a network install.
It used to be basically copy all the RedHat/Fedora/CentOS directories to
a common location.
Then one booted from the network, CD or whatever and gor right into it.
The last part I'm sure is substantially the same as before, but we do

Vorbis Tools installation problem
I am trying to install vorbis-tools 1.0.1 onto my mac os 10.3.5
I installed the relevant libraries through fink
(http://fink.sourceforge.net) - libao2, libvorbis, libogg
my configure command was this:
./configure -with-ogg=/sw --with-ao=/sw --without-flac --without-speex
I received no errors from configure except to let me know that oggenc
would not have flac support and that ogg123 would

Linux on a Thinkpad R40
I've just acquired a use IBM Thinkpad R40 model 2722-GDM.
I'm contemplating what to run on it, and longer-term the likely
candidates are:
Centos 5
SLE{D,S} 10
OpenSUSE 10.2
Kubuntu - the latest.
Kubuntu - Long Life (aka 6.04, Dapper, ...)
I've booted Knoppix 4 in it and most seems well, including the Atheros

Divide by zero in accumulate_fit
Hi,
Lately, my oggenc builds (from CVS) haven't been running correctly. In a few
debugging sessions, I've found that I'm getting a divide by zero exception.
The exception happens in accumulate_fit (floor1.c), line 455:
int weight=nb*info->twofitweight/na;
Here is the call stack:

New lists
Think of this as a motion as one might move at a meeting. Discussion and
refinement are in order.
I don't understand the current rationale for a single CentOS users'
list; probably in times past it was sensible, but I think the time has
come for splitting the list by release.
I'm speaking from my own perspective, but I'm sure others have similar
stories. How many users use

segfault on oggenc
Hello, I'm not a programmer or know well how to operate gdb. However
I've made an attempt to backtrace the problem with 'make debug' and gdb.
Please help if you can. I'd appreciate it, I have this problem for a
couple of months now.
The problem basically is that on debian unstable official packages for the
past couple of months(even after debian updates) I get segfaults when I

problem building vorbis-tools-1.0rc3
I download all the tarballs for rc3. I compiled
and installed all the libraries successfully, but I wan't able to compile
the vorbis tools (1.0rc3) package succesfully.
I can run configure successfully, but when I run make it dies with this

double -> float conversion
I'm in the process of collecting performance data on my platform and I thought I'd test the difference between double and float performance. So, I replaced all occurances of double in vorbis with float (as was suggested should work).
I ended up hanging at:

#1 0x00026dd0 in vorbis_lpc_to_lsp ()

Samba odd behaviour on double NAT network
I'm using a rather strange config, borne out of neccessity rather than
choice at home. My internet 'router' is a Win2000 Pro box running
Winroute, and my three Linux boxen (running 7.2/8.0/9.0 RH) are networked
thru to the Win box using SNAT on the box I work on (don't ask why - it's
just pratical, and I can't afford a hub/switch to do this). In any case,

Problem with nominal bitrates
I'm tentatively creating a Windows .dll file using the Vorbis tools
demos as a base for it. I've taken oggenc and simply converted it into
a .dll file, with some minor changes purely to pass parameters to it
(the original uses the command line).
I have it working as far as it goes, but there seems to be something
going wrong deep inside that I don't understand.

libvorbis and vorbis-tools 1.1.1 release.
I'm pleased to announce the release of libvorbis and vorbis-tools 1.1.1.
These releases include some bug and documentation fixes, but no new
encoder modes. However, oggenc from this release now properly supports
the new CBR engine introduced in libvorbis 1.1.0 but the 1.1.1 release
of both libraries is required for things to work properly. Not that
there was never a 1.1.0 release of
