tool for listening tests
I've been looking around for a tool to compare the quality of different
audio files, didn't find anything, and so botched together something over
the past few days:
http://www.btinternet.com/~jfchapman/files/mcp.zip (Win32, 266Kb)
It's just a small tool for playing up to 3 files simultaneously, with the
ability to switch between the outputs to compare the sound quality (formats

psycho-acoustic model in ogg vorbis
I wonder what psycho-acoustic model is used in ogg vorbis.
Did they create their own model (this requires big listening tests) ?
Or is it something that was already there, like gpsycho ?

Lossy Audio Compression Research
Hello everyone,
I'm a student at the Universtiy of Delaware, and will be soon starting
some research on the effects of lossy audio compression on speech sounds. I
will be preforming test with both mp3 and vorbis.
First of all, if I use the '--ogg' switch to lame, does lame use GPSYCHO
to encode the wave, or some other psychoacoustic model (perhaps one designed for

Participate in listening tests
You know it's good; I know it's good. I'm talking about Vorbis at 128 as
it currently is in CVS. Please participate in a group listening test of
various formats to show how Vorbis 128 has improved since RC2. I have
prepared three sample music clips comparing Liquid AAC, MPC, pre-RC3
Vorbis, Lame, Xing, and WMA8, similar to the first test. Except I believe
that this time Vorbis

Status of thread-safeness of libvorbis?
I have spent quite some hours in the archives of this mailinglist and read a
few threads mainly by Jeff Squyres and Monty about making oggenc
multithreaded. Those threads all are dated around January 2001, quite a time
ago.
For my work experience period I have to implement a parallel (threaded) ogg
encoder (If this is possible, of course.) If it can be done, the code will
be given back to the

Some pre-RC1 listening tests
Hello everyone,
ff123 compiled Monty's branch of the RC1 encoder, see his post on
r3mix.net forum:
http://66.96.216.160/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=c&action=display&num=994299736&start=30
Anyway it only supports ~128kbps mode, so I did a quick listening
test with some files that bugged vorbis beta4.

Digital Ear evaluation of Vorbis beta 4
For those who haven't yet seen this:
EarGuy's Digital Ear (physiological model of the ear based on work by Frank
Baumgarte) has just finished rating the sound quality of Vorbis beta 4 at
128 kbs using 30 random 10-second selections of music:

test vectors for OggVorbis encoder
Hi,
We are working on Oggvorbis encoder porting on embedded platform. Where
can we find good test vectors (wav files) for testing OggVorbis encoder?
Does anybody have any idea.

Vorbis/Lame
Hi,
I think that it would be a good thing to know more about those 2 projects
(and also the future patent free format).
I think that many people as me know about Lame, but not about Vorbis, and
vice-versa.
It would be fine that someone (perhaps the maintainer) of every project
would introduce to both group of people those projects. 2 things would be
interesting (to my mind):
- to know about the

high quality samples
Hi,
does anybody know where I can find high quality samples that are in
the public domain? It's a plus if they're samples that many codecs
have problems with, because I want to use them for a blind test.
Thanks.

CVS problem
Hello;
I've been having a problem retrieving ANYTHING from CVS on your server for a few days. I can log in successfully and can begin checkout. However, it stops here:
...
cvs server: Updating thread
cvs server: Updating timing
Regardless of what I try to pull, be it ices, icecast, or vorbis, it all stops on timing. Is that a known issue? Thank you.

Showcase On Rails CMS v0.1
I built out a simple CMS for websites that rely heavily on portfolios.
This covers graphic and web designers in particular, but also other
people with stuff to show off. It''s really easy to customize
progressively, so that some people will only modify CSS, but others
will dig deeper into Javascript behaviors and the Rails view code.
Check it out at http://showcase.kylemaxwell.com/

Patch to get libogg2 to build with gcc 2.96
Hi,
When I built libogg2 for testing the new vorbose utility, gcc 2.96
stumbled over a portion from stream.c that mixes variable declarations
with statements. The patch below fixes this.

Comparison between Ogg Vorbis and LAME
Guys (and girls),
I\'ve been testing Ogg Vorbis quality at home, and I thought I\'d share the
results with you. For those who want the conclusion, Vorbis 1.0 RC3 sounds
better than LAME 3.70 vbr/cbr (which I\'m told now that it\'s broken for VBR), at
less bitrate, however, it\'s not perfect (and probably never will, since it\'s a
lossy audio codec) and could use some

It is the first few seconds from "Duel of the Fates" off of the Star Wars I
soundtrack. Vorbis beta 4 at 128 produces artifacts that sound like some
tones are beating with others. I identified the Vorbis encode 16 of 16

compressed audio tutorial - "major" update
I've made a large update to the introduction to compressed audio. I
completely rewrote the first section, which I wasn't happy with. It now
features two diagrams (worth 1000 words each!), and is broken up into a
couple of sections.
http://cs.leander.isd.tenet.edu/~mitchell/vorbis_intro.html
I have also continued to tweak other sections based on feedback from email
and this forum.
