recording sound: how 2 control recording level?
Hi gang!
I'm trying to record (to .wav files) sound coming in on the line input
of my sound card (in this case, output of a tape deck).
For LISTENING purposes, I can control the level with the Gnome Mixer.
However, the RECORDING level is not affected by the mixer. As a result,
the recorded audio is badly clipped and horribly distorted.
I don't understand enough about how this stuff

Coping music from tapes
OS: CentOS 5.0 x86.
Hi, I have some old music tapes and a walkman, and want to move the
music to mp3 format. So far I am thinking to use Audacity to record the
music to wavs, and then do not know, somehow I will compress the wavs to
mp3s as vbr 192 Kbps with something.
Has anyone done this? What app did you use for recording the music from
the tapes and what app did you use to make it mp3?

USB audio on Centos-7
I'm using Centos-7 on my PC, with ASUS motherboard. internal audio
has always worked fine EXCEPT that I can never get audio input (for
recording) to work. I want to feed audio from a phono turntable and
from a cassette deck. I use a phono preamp for the turntable, or
directly connect the tape deck.
but either nothing, or low level with horrible distortion.
so, I gave up (after years of

But how do you play all your old VCR tapes? As I said, I want to burn them
to disk, but I still have a working VCR.

Incremental backups?
So I thought I'd get a head start for next week -
I have a low-power Linux box that has a few samba shares mounted, and
limited hard disk space. This box is connected to a tape library via
SCSI card.
I want to find the best way to create a full, then incremental backup of
the samba mounts, directly to tape. Some of the samba mounts are
appliances that cannot run any special

Overland Arcvault 12 and sequential/random settings
My unit's firmware: library 05.03, tape d22h, shows the device as set to
random mode. But mtx -f /dev/st0 status gives an error that google says
the device is in sequential mode. dmesg|grep -i hp does reflect CentOS
thinks the device is a sequential unit.
I've tried this with Fedora 8, too, and both show the same, so it is
either an issue with CentOS/Fedora RPMs, or the version of

Multi-channel labels in Vorbis comments
Hi devs :-)
At the Mozilla Festival in London recently, I took part in a Hack the DJ
workshop, looking at ways to take digital DJ'ing to the next level:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/researchanddevelopment/2011/11/setting-a-dj-challenge-at-the.shtml
One of the ideas proposed was stem mixing, using multichannel files in
DJ applications. A proprietary implementation of this idea is Fireplayer

Help with dump/restore
So I recently installed an Overland Arcvault 12 tape library on a server
to back up /var/log/ and /home. The server is an out-of-box RHEL 5
install, with all packages selected, in an isolated lan, with no package
updates. Also, this is a live server that cannot be brought down for
backups, and some files may be actively in use during the dump - just
gotta live with it.
Since I know EL5 and

anyone know of a list or wiki for GWC?
Hi!
totally OT...
Hoping there is a mailing list or wiki (or other help forum)
for GWC, but haven't found one yet.
I'm working on converting a bunch of my LPs to CDs, and am using
GWC (Gnome Wave Cleaner, or GTK Wave Cleaner) to clean up the noise.
It works great, but I can't figure out how to deal with certain types
of pressing flaws that create a thump every time around.

Command to get tape capacity status?
I have an Overland tape library connected, via SCSI card, to an
out-of-box, full install of C5 install on an old PC.
I have a script that uses tar to archive data to tape and mtx to change
tapes. What I don't know, if possible, is to obtain the status of how
much tape is left in the drive. If I get a write failure, I'd like to
know if the tape is bad or has run out of space.

Problem detecting HP Tape Drive
Hello
I do have problem using Linux with an external HP tape drive. The
server platform is also an HP Server; the server is an HP ML350 G4,
and the Tape drive is a HP Storage Works Ultrium 448 - 1U
Rack-mountable.
HP Ultrium documentation says two drivers should be automatically
up, sym53c8xx for LSI SCSI interface "st" for tape and /proc/scsi/scsi
should contain information about

Active Record question, orphaned children
I have a Deck object and a Card object with their corresponding tables. (You
know a deck of cards.) When I destory a Deck it leaves orphaned cards in
the database. Is there a way to set up the objects with ActiveRecord so that
when a parent object is destoryed the child objects are destroyed as well?
My code below.
class Deck < ActiveRecord::Base

Timing a command
I want to keep track of how long a task is running. Thinking it wouldn't
take that long, I opted not to run time before it. The fact that it is
taking a long time, if I revisit the machine in the morning, what would be
the best way to find out what time it ended?
In this case, I'm using mt to erase an lto3 tape - sudo mt -f /dev/st0
erase. But I'd like to use the knowledge from

Audio Editor
Hey All, I need some advice.
I need an application, that will work with CentOS 6.3, that I can use to
edit audio files. I've used Audacity in the past but it has
compatibility issues with CentOS 6.3 that I would prefer to avoid. I've
spent a couple of hours perusing the Add/Remove Software tool where I
found the Gnome Sound Recorder, but that tool doesn't offer any editing
