Integer wavelet video codec (source and test program)
Hi everybody,
I wrote last time some code to do video compression using a 3d integer
wavelet transform. Since it uses a reversible lifting scheme and avoids a
lot of floating point operations compared to Jacks initial Tarkin code,
this should be somewhat faster and allow lossy+lossless compression.
The current implementation is very experimental, but nevertheless I would
be happy if some of you

new tarkin source
Hi,
I uploaded a new tarball to
http://www.informatik.hu-berlin/~waechtle/w3d-0.1.21.tar.gz.
The command line argument format has changed, it now expects a
byterate/frame and a filename format string like "%i.ppm".
Beside this I have added some minor changes in the coefficient
transmission code.
Please take a look on it, Jacks cat is only slightly blurred even at
1kB/frame -- the

Some tips for testing respond_to block and making controller tests work with simply_helpful
Hi,
Here''s two blog posts for those that need to test respond_to blocks
and/or are currently using simply_helpful extensively.

Multithreading
Hi.
I need to execute a function from within a GUI.
This seems to be no problem but this function takes about 4 minutes to
finish, which means the application doesn't react at all, while the
function is running.
Can I execute a function as a separate Thread, while keeping
control(e.g. a reference) of it at the same time?
If not, how do this with a class containing this function?
thanks,

Testing has_many :through
I''m working with a has_many :through association, where a Member
has_many Projects through ProjectViewers. The problem I''m running
into is that Rails doesn''t load the association so line (3) fails
until I explicitly access a member of the collection (in this case, I
iterated it). Is there a better way?
Thanks,
Steve

Using large-scale repetition in audio compression
This idea is so simple that I'm sure it must have been thought of
before, and discarded, since AFAIK it's not used anywhere. I did a
quick web search but that didn't turn up much, so I figured I'd put
it up for discussion here anyway.
How about using large-scale repetition in audio compression? I'm
thinking of redundancy in repeated pieces of a song, ie a chorus.

fitdistr, mle's and gamma distribution
Dear R Users,
I am trying to obtain a best-fit analytic distribution for a dataset
with 11535459 entries. The data range in value from 1 to 300000000. I
use: fitdistr(data, "gamma") to obtain mle's for the parameters.
I get the following error:
Error in optim(start, mylogfn, x = x, hessian = TRUE, ...) :

Openssh + challenge-response
Hello,
I was searching the internet for an challenge-response system to
authenticate an Openssh session with an hardware token. Now i found this,
its very old, so i want to now how's the situation today. I couldn't find
much documentation.

Ogg MIDI proposal
This is a proposal for Ogg MIDI streams. It will also help other
stream additions to Vorbis, as they should follow a similar model.
Ralph has done much of the work on this, and also is working on MNG
Ogg streams.
Background

I was contracted to do this work, so even if you can't think of a use
for this, there is one ;) Basically with midi in Ogg, we can have

PlusV algorithm
Important (imho)!
I found this site in the internet:
http://www.plusv.org/
PlusV is an audio enhancement algorithm similar to SRB of Mp3Pro, but
1) better than SBR
2) Fully open-source
It seems to me wise to include PlusV into new versions of Ogg Vorbis.
P.S. what about some long-awaited features in Ogg Vorbis?
1) ability to turn off the frequency filter in the encoder (especially for high

Tarkin at last
For all the curious:
http://www.vorbis.com/~jack/tarkin-experimental.tar.gz
ome instructions:
tar xzvf tarkin-experimental.tar.gz
cd tarkin
make
./tarkin 95
./tarkinplayer output.tark
You'll need SDL and SDL-devel if you don't already have them.

Problems with ov_open continued
I've downloaded the latest versions of the libraries available from the
website, http://www.vorbis.com/download_unix.psp, and compiled them, but
it hasn't made any difference to the situation.
I downloaded the .tar.gz "for everyone" versions, not the rpm developer
versions. Will this make any difference?
Cheers,
Oliver Sneyd

For Oggvorbis algorithm description.
Dear Sir,
I am a DSP Engineer working in the field of Audio Standards
and general Signal Processing Algorithms. I am very much interested in
knowing the algorithms which make OggVorbis a reality. Kindly send me
the link which will lead me to the algorithm description or pseudo-code.
Thanking You,
Sincerely,
Tom Xavier.

Could anyone correct the link and/or mirror this paper ?
Thanks,

Psychoacoustic model
We've implemented a vorbis decoder based on Tremor and as part of the
documentation we're also writing about psycho acoustic models and
encoding.
We're quite up to date with the decoding process and psycho acoustics
in general but unfortunately not on the psycho acoustic encoding used
in Vorbis.
We have a few questions that would we would be very thankful to have
answer to:

A different take at video encoding - I'm stuck though
As I said in the other thread (for people using threaded mail)/in my
last mail (for the rest), I'm working on the "split up the frames into
textured triangles and output textures and coordinates" idea. The idea
is to find edges in the image. So far I have a Sobel edge detector, a
wavelet transformer (to compress the textures, still very incomplete,
transform only), and some
