Vorbis granule position
I have a technical question about the vorbis granule position,
but I would like to put the question into context.
When a ogg vorbis stream is ripped using wget, fetch, or
streamripper under Linux or FreeBSD, the resulting file has
problems both with granule position and with a missing EOS. I
think I can figure out how to add an EOS, but is there a way
to determine the granule position in a stream

Stripping silent periods from MP3s
I'm on Centos 5.5, and would like to use sox to strip out
any periods of silence > 5 seconds from a batch mp3 audio
files.
Googling I found sox, but it does not seem to support mp3
files by default.
The man page says:
.mp3 MP3 Compressed Audio
MP3 audio files come from the MPEG standards for audio and video
compression. They are a lossy compression format that achieves

solution to oggsplt / vcut crashing
Dear vorbis-dev
I tried to split an ogg file which was downloaded as a part of a stream
with mplayer -dumpstream -dumpfile file.ogg http://..../stream.ogg. The
metadata or headers or what it is is then of course in error. (I hate
this problem.)
Both vcut (I'd post version if vcut supported a --version or -V option)
and oggsplt (= mp3splt (same about version)) (according to this page,
they

Fixing a Corrupted Vorbis file
Hello, Since last week I started having random ogg files from my library
turning corrupt, and practically being unplayable by anything. All this
while I was browsing and sorting my library through Amarok.
Luckily today I've found the possible culprit, Amarok itself, and others
who may have the issue as well: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=369672
But regardless of how the issue started,

Splitting a WAV file to aid gapless playback
Assuming I have a WAV file that represents a continous performance, e.g. a
recording of a live concert, which I want to play continously on a CD but
nevertheless have track marks so that individual items can be selected some
WAV splitting programs offer the ability to split the file into pieces which
are an exact multiple of the CD sector size so that when recording all these
files to CD with no

What is happening here - rsync can't copy where cp can, Input/Output errors
I am using rsync version 2.6.9 protocol version 29 on a Fedora 7
system to backup files to a network drive.
rsync is getting I/O errors when copying maildir files (I'm not sure
if the error is happening with other files but these are the only ones
I have found so far).
I have done some tests on one particular directory, "cp -R" succeeds
but "rsync -r" fails:-

Recording piano and voice
The last time I wanted to record a voice announcement on my computer was a few years back, and as I recall I hooked up my Microsoft Lifechat headset and used Audacity to do the recording.
Now I want to record a "recitation", which consists of me playing my piano and talking over it.
I have a Casio CDP-230 digital piano but I've never tried hooking it up to my computer and making a

Coping music from tapes
OS: CentOS 5.0 x86.
Hi, I have some old music tapes and a walkman, and want to move the
music to mp3 format. So far I am thinking to use Audacity to record the
music to wavs, and then do not know, somehow I will compress the wavs to
mp3s as vbr 192 Kbps with something.
Has anyone done this? What app did you use for recording the music from
the tapes and what app did you use to make it mp3?

Echocancellation on windows
Hi all,
does anybody has ran echocancellation successfully on windows ?
I have a problem playing audio there. If you play a wav file no mater
how I play it after comparing the captured data with the original file
there is always
difference in the audio length (for 18 sec of audio there is more than
250 ms of difference). Which of course breaks echocancellation.
I've tried playing the audio

VLC only sees a fraction of Speex wrapped in OGG
Friends,
My name is Igor, I am new to this forum.
I have a peculiar problem with my OGG/Speex implementation: I encode a
short PCM stream in OGG/Speex, but the result can not be read by VLC and
MediaInfo <http://mediaarea.net/nn/MediaInfo> reports that the file is too
short (240ms). In reality the file contains about 2.7 sec worth of audio.
Another interesting thing I noticed is that the

Opus in Audacity
Hi
I am an Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) developer and I'd
like to see Audacity reading and writing Opus files as easily as it
does others. What would you recommend as a way forward for this?
I am thinking that (Win) we should ship opusenc.exe and opusdec.exe
and send command line stuff to them; that way we wouldn't need to dip
into your code and as you update we would

Alternative to audacity
What's a good, gui-based sound editor as an alternative to audacity
(since that is not working right now due to conflicts in the gtk
libraries in rpmforge)? Or is there another place whence one may
retrieve audacity? I tried sourceforge, but the links there resolve
to a broken download link or they are for 64-bit rpms.
Thanks.

Problem with filenames with commas in them
This is a continuation of my previous problem where cp could copy
files whereas rsync couldn't. It turns out that the problem is with
files which have commas in their names, rsync can write the initial
version of the file but it can't check/rewrite them.
Here is the error I get from rsync when trying to overwrite the files
(using --inplace) :-
