Question about Ogg files Structure
Hi, I bought an iRiver HP-120 which can read ogg files (via a hard drive). Many people experiment that reading ogg file decrease the baterry charge more quickly than with mp3 at the same bitrate. The only raisonnable reason of that mysterious thing is that reading ogg file is not sequential onto hard drive, and the hard drive head must move more than for reading an mp3 at the same quality, and

Question about volume level recording in Ogg Vorbis
Hi I recorded many hundred of CDs in Ogg Vorbis with exactly the same parameters. I can see very big difference of volume level from one CD to another when I play it onto my computer or my portable device (iRiver HP120). So, I have two questions : * Is the reason of this fact is that it's depends on the volume level at burning time of the original CD ? If not, what is the reason ? * Is

New iRiver Firmware supports Vorbis!
iRiver released some firmware updates today for many of their CD and Flash-based MP3 players. Among the added features is the ability to play back Ogg Vorbis and FLAC audio files. Interestingly, in order to make room for the decoders, they also _removed_ the ability to play back Windows Media Audio. It's unfortunate that they had to take out some capability, but I'd prefer Ogg to wma

[faq?] Portable players supporting ogg vorbis
Hi, I got into the mood of acquiring a portable music player, and I want to "vote with my dollars" and choose among the players that can play ogg files. What are my options? So far, I have seen the Rio Karma (and some other Rio models?), and my favorite as of today is one of the iRiver iFP-1xxT. The Neuros looks even better, but ogg support seems incomplete. Any good experience, bad

[support@mydivaplayer.com: Re: Ogg Vorbis support? -=[2214]=-]
I'm not subscribed to this list, but I have been reading the archive online for awhile now. I thought this forward may be of interest. It sounds like we _might_ have Vorbis capable players in the near future! :) Any more word on support from iRiver? The hardware URL has not been updated since they were supposedly shipping Vorbis capable units to Xiph. -- Mark Nipper

measuring iops on linux - numbers make sense?
Hello, When approaching hosting providers for services, the first question many of them asked us was about the amount of IOPS the disk system should support. While we stress-tested our service, we recorded between 4000 and 6000 "merged io operations per second" as seen in "iostat -x" and collectd (varies between the different components of the system, we have a few such

IOPS required by Asterisk for Call Recording
Hi What are the disk IOPS required for Asterisk call recording? I am trying to find out number of disks required in RAID array to record 500 calls. Is there any formula to calculate IOPS required by Asterisk call recording? This will help me to find IOPS for different scale. If I assume that Asterisk will write data on disk every second for each call, I will need disk array to support minimum

[storage-discuss] high read iops - more memory for arc?
Pre-fletching on the file and device level has been disabled yielding good results so far. We''ve lowered the number of concurrent ios from 35 to 1 causing the service times to go even lower (1 -> 8ms) but inflating actv (.4 -> 2ms). I''ve followed your recommendation in setting primarycache to metadata. I''ll have to check with our tester in the morning if it made

Measuring ZFS performance - IOPS and throughput
Can anybody tell me how to measure the raw performance of a new system I''m putting together? I''d like to know what it''s capable of in terms of IOPS and raw throughput to the disks. I''ve seen Richard''s raidoptimiser program, but I''ve only seen results for random read iops performance, and I''m particularly interested in write

Storage IOPs Calculation for Qmail Server
Dear DovecotORG, In my organization, we are about to implement Qmail Server. * The number of current users will be 800, in future it may increase upto 1200. * The number of concurrent users will be 300. I am the engineer to deploy the Qmail in Linux server. I need to tell the storage team on the IOPs requirement. I requested 8TB usable space for the mail storage (can

Hardware list on vorbis.com
I like the vorbis.com site, and it was my first contact with Vorbis. Hardware support has never been hugely important to me, but the perceived lack of hardware support keeps many people from using Vorbis. I think there should be a list of Vorbis-supporting hardware right on vorbis.com. There are already a few non-PC devices that can play Vorbis (DP-450 DVD player, Zaurus, Palm), as well as

high read iops - more memory for arc?
I''m running into a issue where there seems to be a high number of read iops hitting disks and physical free memory is fluctuating between 200MB -> 450MB out of 16GB total. We have the l2arc configured on a 32GB Intel X25-E ssd and slog on another32GB X25-E ssd. According to our tester, Oracle writes are extremely slow (high latency). Below is a snippet of iostat: r/s w/s

Another portable player? (The iRiver iHP 120)
Hi all, My japanese is not so good ;-) But it appears that iRiver have released the iHP-120, and it includes OGG playback support. http://www.iriverjapan.com/product.php?product=iHP-120 If you scroll down to "Multi-CODEC" you will see that they use the words "Ogg Vorbis", not once but twice! I haven't seen it float past here yet, so I just thought that I would bring it

iRiver iFP-790 and its Ogg Vorbis support
Does anyone have the iRiver iFP-790 player (or maybe any other one of their iFP-7xx series)? I bought this player very recently, and I have been having problems with Ogg Vorbis playback. It skips so much that you only hear music 20% of the time. Is my unit defective or does the player really have problems with ogg vorbis? I think mine even chokes on wma's encoded at standard settings. Any

It doesn't play from removable media? Well, it functions like any other Digital Audio Player. Take the iPod, the iRiver iHp 120 and the Rio Karma to name just a few. These players all have integrated 20 or 40

IIS and Samba
Good morning. I am sorry for this newbie question: I am using a samba (3.01) share on a RedHat 9 system, which holds datas and w32 applications for our intranet. Since I develop isapi.dll's , I need to have a running IIS on another machine, and a virtual directory which points to the samba share, where Dll's and databases are stored. On creating the virtual directory, I am asked with which

Hardware List Draft
Here's a list of non-PC hardware I found that supports Vorbis, with links and short descriptions. It's still kind of rough, and I don't have personal experience with any of these things, though where noted, I have gotten email from the company. This is still just a draft. I've made links, and also left the URLs after the headings so it converts to text well. Following the
