malloc(0) returns 0x800 on FreeBSD 6.2 ?
i was debugging a program on FreeBSD 6, and much to my surprise, i noticed that malloc(0) returns 0x800, as shown by this program: > more a.c #include <stdio.h> int main(int argc, char *argv[]) { char *p = malloc(0); printf(" malloc 0 returns %p\n", p); } > cc -o a a.c > ./a malloc 0 returns 0x800 if you look at the source this is indeed clear - internally

vm_thread_new: kstack allocation failed with vm.kmem_size="1536M"
So, I have a farm of machines runnign 7.1/amd64, all of which have 16 gig of memory in them. This afternoon, as an experiment, I altered loader.conf to have these two lines in it: vm.kmem_size="1536M" vm.kmem_size_max="1536M" This is what I do on machines running ZFS - these machines are not, however running ZFS, and do not have the zfs module loaded. I just wanted to see if

Problems with puppetdb and SSL
When I run openssl s_client -host puppet -port 8081 -CAfile /etc/puppet/ssl/certs/puppet.fqdn I get Verify return code: 21 (unable to verify the first certificate). If I run the same command, but use port 8140 to connect to puppet, I get a return code of 19 (which is correct). I believe that, if I fix this SSL problem then it would fix my main problem which is : Report processor failed:

OT - RE: When will quality increase be unnoticable?
In all the abx'ing and ear testing I've done in the past for my classical and jazz music I have never seen or heard bladeenc output worse than xing. (worse than lame, yes) Now, to sorta keep this ON topic. I have never heard a an xing, blade OR lame encoded mp3 sound better than a Garf tuned RC2 encode of my Jazz and Classical stuff, (not a large sample set). Also, I haven't used

5-STABLE softupdates issue?
Greetings, out of fun and to investigate claims about alleged bgfsck resource hogging (which I could not reproduce) posted to news:de.comp.os.unix.bsd, I pressed the reset button on a live FreeBSD 5-STABLE system. Upon reboot, fsck -p complained about an unexpected softupdates inconsistency on the / file system and put me into single user mode, the manual fsck / then asked me to agree to

But you can tell cdparanoia to rip the whole CD into

Problem retreiving catalog
I updated some of my gems, and I think it may be the reason I am getting the following error when the agents try to retrieve a catalog. err: Could not retrieve catalog from remote server: Error 400 on SERVER: The single-table inheritance mechanism failed to locate the subclass: ''Host::Managed''. This error is raised because the column ''type'' is reserved for

Re: An introduction to compressed audio with Vorbis
On <http://cs.leander.isd.tenet.edu/~mitchell/vorbis_intro.html>: "Each snapshot has a 16-bit number for the "loudness" of the sound, meaning that the scale is fairly fine-grained - it ranges from -32,768 (complete silence during that snapshot) to 32,767 (the loudest volume measurable)." That's not correct. A single sample is not meaningful by itself; each sample

HP-UX 9 problems (hangs on logout; tty isn't sane)
I'm trying to get OpenSSH 2.5.2p2 to run on HP-UX 9.05. I've had some decent results, but I'm also seeing some problems. I'm using the EGD (I configured with --with-prngd-socket=/tmp/entropy). * Compiling required some changes, which I've attached. Two of the changes are "hackish", and not at all suited to inclusion in the source tree, but they might point

lowpass option (Was: RE: channel coupling in rc2)
I would very much like a lowpass option because for FM radio broadcasting I don't want to encode frequencies above 15khz. I'm waiting for this option before switching to ogg from mp3(lame). recommended memory for zfs
Hello zfs question about memory. I heard zfs is very ram hungry. Service looking to run: - nginx - postgres - php-fpm - python I have a machine with two quad core cpus but only 4 G Memory I'm looking to buy more ram now. What would be the recommend amount of memory for zfs across 6 drives on this setup? Also can 9.1 now boot to zfs from the installer? (no tricks for post install) Thanks

speex on Dell Axim X51v
Hi, Sorry to be posting about a subject that may have already been answered. If so, please point me in the right direction. I'm developing a dictation application on the Dell Axim (Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC). A key requirement of the application is the best possible sampling rate as the audio goes into a speech reco system. So, I've set up my wrapper around libspeex to capture audio

ultra-low bitrate stream?
I am writing a long-run sound recording application using OggVorbis. The user can adjust sound quality parameter to make balance between storage space and sound quality. The input sound is 22050Hz, mono. To maximize the recording capability on a given storage volume, we want the result bitrate as low as possible. I use -q0 parameter and it produces a 32.0kbps stream. It is too high (our

reencoding: ices/lame with otto
i have installed ices with lame suport (thanks to all who helped!), and it happily reencodes bitrates. i have installed otto, and that too is brillient however i can't get otto to call ices in such a way that it will reencode stuff streamed thru otto... when i have had ices working with reencoding, i've configured it via the xml config file rather than with command line switches
