docs question
hello, i have a question about the documentation: oggenc --help says: -b, --bitrate Choose a nominal bitrate to encode at. Attempt to encode at a bitrate averaging this. Takes an argument in kbps. This uses the bitrate management engine, and is not recommended for most users. See -q, --quality for a

isolinux problem: recent kernel versions vs. old hardware
Hi, recent isolinux versions work fine with current linux kernels on current hardware. But on older hardware there isn't a bootsplash visible at all - like if there isn't a CD in the tray. :( Sadly the older isolinux versions don't work with current kernels (giving me an empty /proc/cmdline for example when using kernel 2.6.23), otherwise I'd just use an old isolinux version of

most pointless mentioning/advertising of a format in a film i've ever seen
In the recent muppets christmas film, god (played by whoopi goldberg- or howevr u spell her name), mentioned converting her entire album collection (every album ever recorded. ever) to mp3 files. Now that is the most pointless use of advertising the inferior mp3 format i've ever seen. Now that we've started covering the use of vorbis in games, anyone spotted any reference (no matter how

"The account is not authorized to login from this station"
Good Day, I am testing, in a lab environment, samba shares with ad authentication for access. My setup is as follows : * Windows 2008 RC2 * RHEL 5.9 * Windows 7 * Windows XP SP3 * Samba 3.0.33-3.39.el5_8 All machines, including the RHEL Server having been added to the Domain running on the Windows 2008 RC2 Server. As per the subject, when trying to connect, from XP or Win 7, to the shares I

faced this exact same problem a few times on more than one servers and it was 1) dialplan issue which was not hanging up the zap channels correctly 2) using more than 8 spans on a server. Asterisk can't handle more than 96 zap channels on T1s. FXO/FXS combinations can vary the number of spans but if you know what I mean by spans, in production don't use more than 6 spans. group means: split and unsplit
Took me a while but I figured out how to put in common values of group means/counts, etc. to do the same thing as egen. lapply with split and then unsplit. Clustered standard errors in a panel
I want to do the following: glm(y ~ x1 + x2 +...) within a panel. Hence y, x1, and x2 all vary at the individual level. However, there is likely correlation of these variables within an individual, so standard errors need adjustment. I do not want to estimate fixed effects, but do want to cluster standard errors at the individual level. Is there an automated way to do this? Nothing in

r equivalent of egen? Not tapply
I have a list that has about 50 elements, each repeated many times (a list of states by observation). I want to create a vector with the same length with the same value repeated over and over again within states. The value I want is the number of observations that are in the same state as each observation. In stata, this is simply egen statesum = count(state), by(state). What is the r

Outreg-like command?
It would be nice to have something like stata's outreg that lets regression output go into a form like Specification (1) Specification (2) Var 1 coef(1,1) coef(1,2) se(1,1) se(1,2) Var 2 coef(2,1) coef(2,2) se(2,1) se(2,2) I don't think this can be done in xtable? Separating parts of a column of data in R

mgcv: how select significant predictor vars when using gam(...select=TRUE) using automatic optimization
I have 11 possible predictor variables and use them to model quite a few target variables. In search for a consistent manner and possibly non-manual manner to identify the significant predictor vars out of the eleven I thought the option "select=T" might do. Example: (here only 4 pedictors) first is vanilla with "select=F" >

rsync & io
You're obviously not the first to need this. That's why the '--bwlimit=' option was added. Set it to however many Kbps you want rsync to use. I usually use 768 going over our wan, to spare some bandwidth on the T1, and maybe 10000 over the lan (in my case, all the dasd is nfs). I suspect that it may affect local-to-local transfers as well, but haven't tested it, but

R as a non-functional language
I'm reading Torgo (2010) *Data Mining with R*<http://www.liaad.up.pt/~ltorgo/DataMiningWithR/code.html>in preparation for a class I'll be teaching next quarter.
