cAos/CentOS Users in Boston/New England area
I'm still looking for any volunteers in the Boston or New England areas that would be willing to help out at LinuxWorld in February. It goes Feb 14th - 17th, but the expo part is only 15th - 17th. If you can't come all three days, that's fine, but I would appreciate if there were a couple people that could come at least a day or two. Also, If you help out you get a 3 day pass to the

vorbis_encode_init() bitrate arguments - offtopic
Hi, It's a bit offtopic for this list, but you might be able to help. For libvorbis rc3, what is the correct bitrate parametrization for the call vorbis_encode_init()? For rc2, it worked calling it the following way: vorbis_encode_init( &vorbisInfo, 2, // two channels 44100, // 44.1kHz

Vorbis rate and bitrate.
Hi I want to encode at 64kbps at a 22050 rate ... this is not possible ... why? For me it seems a waste of cpu to encode at 64kbps with 44100 sample rate (of course I might be wrong :). I saw in the vorbisenc.c that aprox_bitrate_to_vbr returns -1 to every sample rate that is not > 42000 ... is this safe to change ? Thanks, Nicu. <p>--- >8 ---- List archives:

xen dies on Linux agpgart interace
Xen appears to kernel panic. Boot up terminates and hangs with the message "agpgart: Maximum main memory to use for agp memory: 152 M. " This is a compiled Xen-2.0 latest snapshot with agp support in the kernel. Has anyone else had similar problems with agp? Some timings for 64 bit Opteron (ATLAS, GOTO, std)
Hi Martin, When I attended the LinuxWorld Expo in NYC back in January, I chatted with some folks at the AMD booth, as well as guys from Penguin Computing (where we bought our Opteron box). I was told that the Operton has this somewhat strange setup that the memory is controlled by one CPU. The net effect of this being that when both CPUs are running, one might only be running at around 90%

LinuxWorld Expo Update
Well, the first day was interesting. We a variety of questions from why do we do this, what's going on with RH, how come this is the first I've heard of you. And hundreds more. The good thing is that we've recieve a very positive response from everyone that visited our booth. Such a positive response that all our CentOS CD's are gone, and most of the cAos CD's are gone, and

will this clever plan work?
allow me to play someone with a fractional clue for the moment. What I want is a Gentoo based system that can run multiple virtual instances (maybe as many as 10 or 20) of a stock application configuration. My fantasy is that I will be able to build a single disk image for all of the basic OS and application to be shared between multiple virtual machines. Update that single core image using

Centos at FOSDEM in Brussels?
Hi, I'm a Centos user in Brussels, BE. I'll be going to the FOSDEM conference next weekend and I was thinking about printing up and giving out centos CDs while there. 1) any other centos folks going to be at FOSDEM? 2) any guidelines for printing CD's - I can only run 50 or 100... regards, -Ryan -- Ryan Sweet <ryan.sweet at aoes.com> Advanced Operations and

Sniffer techniques
As the group knows, I'm having compatibility issues with a critical database application. It's been wisely suggested that I monitor the line to see what's up. Problem is: I've never done this before & suspect others like me are not familiar with these techniques. I did find an old LinuxWorld article http://tinyurl.com/yrjurx however I help thinking there is more on the top.

Want my RSYNC documentation link to be added to your resources list.
Dear RSYNC guys, As initially i found it really confusing setting up RSYNC done, but as i got it through, I was really fascinated with it. So i decided to create a new tutorial on my own regarding " UNDERSTAND RSYNC SERVERS & THEIR IMPLEMENATIONS". vorbis bitrates - offtopic
Hi, I'm experimenting with IceCast2, using DarkIce to generate the stream. I have found some peculiarities with the vorbis bitrates. In DarkIce, I call vorbis_encode_init() with about the following values: vorbis_encode_init( &vorbisInfo, 2, 44100, 96, 96, 96); which by all reasons should generate a 96 kb/s stream, as all max_bitrate, nominal_bitrate and min_bitrate are set to 96.

OT: OGG in the mainstream
There is a big, big difference between cbr and vbr, btw. The machine in question is a Pentium 3 700 oc'ed to 800, 512MB ram, win nt 5.1 (2k and xp being nt) etc In an earlier version the oddcast dsp ate up so much cpu time when set at say 64kbps (for examples sake) 44.1kHz, stereo that the machine became totally unusable and the winamp task had to be (slowly) ended with task manager. Now,

Q: Bandwidth vs. bitrate
Hi! I have some MP3 audio material which is basically speech with some background noises, essentially > 120Hz and < 5kHz. I had the idea to reduce the file size by recoding the material to Opus at 56kbps. Unfortunately the result is a file sampled at 48kHz much larger than the original. I hope you agree that it does not make sense to create a file larger than the original (MP3). Of course

Exciting news about cAos & CentOS - Please read
I have the great pleasure to announce that the cAos Foundation has been given the right to an exhibitor booth at the upcoming LinuxWorld Expo in Boston, Massachusetts from February 15th - 17th. (More info here: http://www.linuxworldexpo.com/live/12/events/12BOS05A). This is a awesome opportunity to further cAos and CentOS linux. But I do not feel that we should give 1/2 an effort. I feel that

Unable to set ACLs with Samba 3.0.11, near publication deadline
Hello, Jeremy and Jerry, I met both of you at LinuxWorld in Boston, where I learned tons and tons of great stuff from your presentations. I'm writing on deadline for publication and would really, really, really like to show off Samba's ability to map NT ACLs to POSIX ACLs. But right now, I can't make them work. I've spent some time on the Samba list trying to make this work, but
