Lossless video codec
I know this probably transcends the scope of the current aims of Ogg video, but one thing I'd consider extremely useful is a lossless video compressor. There are a few of them out there (e.g. PICVideo's lossless wavelet codec) but I've found no free ones so far. The primary use would be for storage of video clips that would be too cumbersome to store as raw frames but still require

opus lossless?
Hi All, It is possible to make Opus/CELT a lossless coder if I allow a sufficiently high bit rate? We considered using FLAC, but FLAC's latency is well beyond the acceptable range. Lossless/lossy hybrid?
Monkey's Audio lossless compressor (currently win32 only, free but not open-source except decoder) author is thinking to implement a kind of audiophile-quality lossy compression which would filter "noise bits" that are hard to encode lossless but which are (or should be) inaudible and thus improve lossless compression (avg. 300-450kbps). I think that implementing something like this

Lossless Video Codec
Hi, has the subject of creating a lossless video codec been considered? I know Dirac is available, but it is a hybrid; saving a file and having to set a compression setting is not very intuitive for a novice. I suggest a lossless codec for the distant future, an idea of the codec's name is: FLAV. Free Lossless Agile Video. The goals of it would be: Provide lossless video, have a

Exact metadata reproduction
Hi! I'm just now preparing the first, still very experimental (way pre-1.0) release of a new archival tool, similar to (and based on) zip/unzip, with the difference that the enhanced zip tool can store x86-based decompressor code fragments in archives along with the compressed data, which the unzip tool runs in an isolated user-mode virtual machine in order to extract the data. The main

Variable Bit Rate
Is FLAC a variable bit rate format when streamed? SHN
I am interetsed to know views on how does best quality ogg compression compare with SHN or whether this is this really comparing apples with oranges because SHN does not compress that greatly? I am on a Music list that is doing a Tape Tree. I guess Grateful dead have made SHN the cult leader format. -- Raena Lea-Shannon --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg

some report on type 3 wav
Dear all, I have a wav file that when I try to encode with the FLAC Frontend, I get "ERROR: unsupported format type 3". When I open it with an audio editor I find it is 44100 / 32 bit. I requantized it to 16 bit using the default dither and then compressed it with FLAC to get a 61 Mbyte file (the original was about 347 Mbyte). Obviously, this altered somewhat the quality, although

Why so many lossless formats?
Hi folks, I'm trying to get a handle on the many lossless audio formats from the perspective of a software developer. I love the FLAC format because it is open source and it performs very well. But there is also the MLP (Meridian Lossless Packing), AAC (Apple Lossless), and probably some Microsoft format(s) that compete in the same feature set. These formats all achieve

Lossless stream from MPD...
Any way to setup a lossless stream from MPD? I know MPD can encode FLAC, but I don't know if Icecast can handle it. Bug with FLAC raw encoding
I found a bug with FLAC v0.6 raw encoding. It appears that the file pointer in the source file is not reset after seeking to the end for checking the size. I've attached a patch. I'm excited about FLAC!! I've been looking for a good GPL lossless RAW audio compressor for use with sound fonts. Sound font files contain 16 bit samples that are word aligned, so just treating it as raw

bitrtate peeling and lossless compression
I just read some of the discussion on the list about 'bitrate peeling' and remembered an interview of Monty that I have read recently. In it he says that Vorbis uses MCDTs <sp> and that these are theoretically reversable. And now, I learn that theoretically we can use bitrate peeling to make smaller files from larger ones, and that leads to my question. Could I theoretically

Coping music from tapes
OS: CentOS 5.0 x86. Hi, I have some old music tapes and a walkman, and want to move the music to mp3 format. So far I am thinking to use Audacity to record the music to wavs, and then do not know, somehow I will compress the wavs to mp3s as vbr 192 Kbps with something. Has anyone done this? What app did you use for recording the music from the tapes and what app did you use to make it mp3?

Pre-echo like noises on Beta4
Hi, there. Although I'm not a hacker at all, I noticed an audible noise on Beta 4 encoded files. So, I'd like to report it here. I ripped and encoded 'A Day Without Rain' on the album with the same name By Enya into Vorbis using Oggenc and Oggdrop Beta 4 from the Vorbis site. (You know, she is quite an encoder-killer.) At all the bitrates, files encoded by Oggdrop had audible
