continuous time AR(1)
Dear R helpers, I would like to model temporal trend of biological remains in sediment cores. All samples are temporally auto-correlated and I would like to take this effect into account. Initially I thought that I could use AR(1) or ARIMA functions but these functions only work with regular temporal intervals between samples. Hence I would like to use a continuous time AR(1) that allow

About "STL" function
Hi, I'm astudent in hydrobiology and I actually work on river's discharge and try to extract from my data the seasonal and trend components. I use STL function but I have several problems in understanding what this function have done. I'd like to know what means the IQR results which gave me some % about the seasonal component, trend component and the remainder component.

5.5 ISO size vs RHEL
Hi We use CentOS and RHEL, the 5.5 RHEL ISO for x86_64 is 3.7GB (**), the CentOS one is 4602MB (***) split over two DVDs. Is this reasonable and correct? Any ideas why would there be such a discrepancy if they are built from the same (or very similar) source? Regards Anthony Caetano ** the md5sum checks out, and RHN lists the size as 3,532 MB *** CentOS-5.5-x86_64-bin-DVD-1of2.iso +

Standards for delivery of GPL software in CRAN packages
I wondered if there were standard practices in CRAN for delivery of R source implementing functions in R packages. I has encountered a couple of packages where the gzipped version of source contains very little, primarily the Help files describing the functions in the package. In some cases I can find the source as the value of the function name. Given that these packages are released as GPL,

Theora and software patents
The list probably did not get this reply from D Richard Felker III. Having read quite a few patents I tend to agree with Richard: Software patents are very broad and even if I have not read the source code of Theora I would be surprised if it did not infringe several patents. However, I believe the argument that On2 has not been sued for infringing the MPEG-patents is a very strong argument.

Possible repo polllution
Hi, I've just been checking my local copy of the CentOS repos. I found 200+ i386/i686 packages in both the updates/5/RPMS and updates/6/Packages directories. I checked with my rsync site ( ftp.heanet.ie ) and the equivalent UK site ( ftp.mirrorservice.org ) and they both carried these packages also. Is this a case a repo pollution, it can't be necessary to have i386 packages in

R performance
Dear R Fans, I was recently asking myself how quick R is in code execution. I have been running simulations lately that need quite a time for execution and I was wondering if it is reasonable at all to do more computational extensive projects with R. Of course, it is possible to compare execution time for the same code written in several languages but maybe someone has some experience on the

yum install nagios, adding dag repository
Hi, I'm running an Opteron 64 bit server, and in an effort to re-join it to my nagios monitoring, I have tried the install nagios via Yum. When I type: yum install nagios, or nagios-nrpe, or nagios-plugins, I get: "Nothing to do". as output. In wanting to add the DAG repository to my machine, the documentation i've come across seems vague. Can someone advise me on either of

Dag RPM Repo "error"
I'm getting the error below when I try to do a yum update on my server. It seems that it is looking for an update for my boot loader - syslinux-3.62-1.el4.rf.i386.rpm, but can't find it via the normal path. I've tried looking further up the directory tree on apt.sw.be/redhat/el4/en. I've found a place to download it from. [

Patents
I suppose it could be possible to patent something and let the patent expire so that it is registered at the patent office but not enforcable. No one else could patent it then. I get curious about the RLE patent. I heard Someone has a patent on run length encoding and I wonder how long they have had it because I remember RLE code running on a sinclair spectrum in the 80's before the whole
